Re: Booting Maemo 5 from mmc card on N900
Based on my recent experience, it seems to me that eventually LOTS OF PEOPLE are going to want to boot from mmc cards on the N900.
Is the process ready for LOTS OF PEOPLE of varying level of expertise?. I find the list of instructions intimidating. I long for the ease of PENGUINBAIT's directions for booting from an mmc. Send that man some N900s! Reading this thread earlier, I have the feeling that only a few people are booting from mmcs now. I have a 16G MMC ready to boot from myself. How many people are already booting from MMCs now on their N900s? I am running into problems of various kinds (some related to lack of optification, no doubt) when the amount of memory I have available to install programs drops much below one gig. I had the feeling in the days of the N800 or N810 that almost everyone was booting from an MMC. Is there some reason that more people aren't doing so now? Is there a hidden holdup or disadvantage for doing so, or is it just not necessary? |

I guess most people aren't interested yet in booting from an mmc, or if they are they are running Mer or Easy Debian or something.

Given that SD cards are pretty huge anymore & my complete lack of UberGuru Maemo Skills (other than following directions :D ) :
Wouldn't this solve the rootfs issue? Thanks Sno |

Unlimited space for app installation is NOT all the benefit of MMC boot. Another benefit is able to make a complete backup of the system handy to allow 'risky' behavior, like installation of alpha program etc. Without MMC boot, the N900 cannot go 'too' wild. Edit: What kind of risky behavior I would like to try? Repartition of the internal drive, Java is possible.....on and on, without the safety net of MMC boot, and knowing myself's next to zero of programming, I can only watch :( bun |
