It would be impossible for WIFI to handle the bitrate of decoded raw HD video

720p should work, as it has been done before on this hardware, even with a slower wifi module.

Sorry probably I did not make myself clear enough. I was referring to the N900 decoding the video and then sending it over wifi to a display. In this case the video being sent is RAW video. It is easy enough to work out the bitrate of RAW 720p video - it is around 92MBytes/s way above any form of wifi in existance today. Of course streaming the encoded 720p signal is a completly different story and would only require a bitrate of a few mbit/s but then that is not the N900 displaying or decoding the video is it? Rather it is the N900 simply serving/streaming a file.

Re: n900 hd playback

i copied a avi-movie-file on the n900 which is 608x256 pixels with a bitrate of 1011 kbit/s

this movie is not playing smoothly.

its watchable, but not nearly as smooth as it normally is (when played on a computer)

but i have to say it looks really really good on the n900-screen, while it being a mediocre looking video file on a computer-screen.

It should be able to handle that resolution. Maybe the codec is non-standard or something. A couple of my dvdrip looks awesome and played smoothly.

What about using the USB port? Some DVD players now come with USB input so users can rip DVD's, store them on USB flash drives, and watch them on their TV without having to burn the file to a disc.

Couldn't the N900 just send the video through USB into a compatible device? (This assumes you have a USB input on your TV or DVD player, though...)

That would be just using the N900 as a mass media USB storage device. Nothing more.
Yes, it should work for most devices but it's not really something that N900 is doing. :p

Well, yes, I suppose so. So that type of functionality should already be present, then? Is USB supported for something other than a computer?

It's true, you wouldn't be able to view the file ON the N900, but you could still take a reencoded HD movie with you, say to travel or something.
