Re: Jogging with the N900

So I've been seriously contemplating an iTouch 4g for jogging.
Mainly because unlike most other freaking iPods, it has BT and Nike+!
But it's a weird form of Nike+ in that it doesn't use a GPS (except iP4) or pedometer.
It somehow makes use of the accelerometer....

I'm not sure how accurate this will be compared to using a GPS or pedometer.
Plus it's a lot of dosh to spend on an iPod, just so I can have BT & log my runs etc.
So I'm thinking maybe I should just make use of my N900.

Has anyone actually used a recent iPod with Nike+? Is there a comparable set-up for N900?
I know you could just use any GPS logger, but I want a polished experience etc.
Any ideas/suggestions/experiences?

**UPDATE**
My bad, Nike+ has always made use of an accelerometer or GPS: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nike%2BiPod
With the aid of the Nike+ GPS app, iTouch 4G & iPhone 4 need only the accelerometer* built into them.

Unlike previous Nano's or Touch's, which need either an:
accelerometer hooked-up to ones shoe that transmits to a receiver plugged into the iPod. OR
accelerometer hooked-up to ones shoe that transmits to a receiver already built-in.

Though it's still not clear how well this change works in practice, can't find anything on the net!
I would've thought having the accelerometer in ones shoe (or using pouch) would be more accurate.

Hey thanks for the suggestion!
Have you used Nike+ on a recent iPod?
If so how does it compare IYO?

When I jog with my N900 now I don't put it in my pocket; I bought a case that I can clip on to my waist band. That minimizes the jiggle and makes it more comfortable to run with.

I run with mine for about a year, 3-4 days/week, for about 30-50 min/day. I keep it in a Caselogic pouch, secure the loop to my wrist, and run with it in hand. Sometimes I'll use a Motorokr S305 or SE HBH-IS800 BT headset. I've run in the rain a few times without issue. Works well enough for me.

Re: Jogging with the N900

Slightly off topic here, but the "rattling" noise is the vibrate motor spinning as you shake it.
Remember, the vibrater is(in this case) a little motor with a semi-curcular weight on the shaft. As the motor spins, the weight ends up shaking the device as it's not balanced.

It's not a problem to have it move as you shake the phone, and can be safely ignored.

Just going to get the itouch 4g 8GB, on-balance it's ahead of the ZuneHD for my intended uses.
Looked at numerous comparos/discussions etc, the HD2 may push ahead of the 4G, but that's a way off.
I can always play with the N900 too & compare both for music/podcasts + jogging + run stats.

Now looking for some decent stereo BT (maybe with mic) headphones.
Have started with the Senn. range, don't really need noise cancellation so that prolly knocks-out some already :)

I have to say: So far android is the best choice if you... walking, running, jogging, biking and so forth. A great watch is even better. But way to expensive. Buy a cheap SE x10 or basic HTC. Don't use the n900 for training its almost useless.

I want the touch also because i intend to re-purpose it as UR that interfaces with a controller device for a HA system I'm building soon.
Based loosely around this.....
