I followed the instructions that SBartsch gave, but now whenever I try and generate a a private key the program always freezes. Would you have any idea as to why this is occurring?

Pidgin-otr works great. Yet it hasn't been updated for a while. For security purposes it would be great to have a newer version. The original uploader has not been online since 2012, is it possible for someone to compile (if needed, I don't know much about these kinds of things yet) and upload it to repository or other cloud?
