I don't think the author understands why "independent geeks" don't like iPads. It's because they're locked down, they're bland appliances that are not to be tinkered with that seem to be owned more by the manufacturer than the end user, which is about the opposite of what we want in our devices. It's the same reason a car enthusiast would prefer a Lotus Exige to an R35 Nissan GTR.
I had an iPhone and over time became quite critical of it.

Still, the above quote is quite self-evident to me; it is about the same as stating that 95% of the most vocal critics of the Democratic party aren't Democrats. While a true enough statement, writing an article on the matter isn't exactly pushing journalistic excellence forward.

People join groups they agree with, and they buy products that they want to spend their money on.

Hate implies emotion. I no longer hate Microsoft. I removed their desktop products from my daily life, and over time the hate just turned into indifference. I now try to use that general technique when ever possible, but so far I've been unsuccessful withTime Warner.

At least fundamentally, there is really no limit to what Linux can do due to its openness whereas iXXX are pretty much "closed". Since iXXX is being pushed as the best things ever which can/will do all sort of wonderful thing; then it is unavoidable that some people would have the "hate" responses. You got some people would hate about anything without reasons or with agenda; but then that is life.

I didnt know the ipad didnt have a USB..thats ridiculous!? Hahaa gerbick, nice call on the Mel Gibson...keep those nutters in line!!!
