Especially if the benchmarks are comparing a 2.2 G2 versus a 2.1 say Samsung Vibrant given the optimizations Google made in Froyo.

True but we all won't know til its out in the wild among other phones. But I'm sure it will be fast enough for me and if not still got my trusty ole N900 :D
But in all honesty I believe it will be a good phone.

I'm getting really tired of seeing people grr it doesn't have a 1ghz processor. Well mhz isn't a proper way to compare different processors. It is like saying a camera that is 8mp will take better photos than one that is 5mp the only way to determine who has the better camera by testing photo and video capabilities and seeing the samples, just like you determine processor power by benchmark. All of these tech journalists need to keep something in mind this device runs on the newer Snapdragon that is 45nm instead of 65nm, so much better battery life (which is always ideal because smartphones get horrible battery life), the device also has the new Adreno 205 graphics which is more powerful than the graphics found on previous Snapdragon devices. Also it is like comparing an Amd Phenom x4 (3.4ghz) older to an Amd Phenom x6(2.8ghz) newer. These videos will change your mind T-Mobile G2 Benchmark http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=279W15Wq3Gc where it outperforms them all and a tech demo from Qualcomm demonstrating what the chip can do http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vBZcD-IqefY.

Again unless that G2 benchmark is compared against other devices running Froyo I don't think it's an accurate comparision given the optimizations 2.2. Once all the devices are running Froyo then we can see how they all do in terms of benchmarking.

It outperformed the Google Nexus One, HTC, Evo 4g, and Motorola Droid 2 which were all running froyo.

really dont like saying this but..
thinking about switching to HTC desire HD in october,
unless nokia give us full flash and fix the play button on my media player widget by then!, cant really see that happening tho, if only they gave us full flash we would have the best device on the market again, but recently android have taken top spot IMHO, and that apple4 thingy still dont even come close!

rrmaster has it right. The G2 is not a superphone that's gonna blow everything away, but is very capable. It's built and spec'd as it is for good reasons.

No way a G2 could replace my N900. Nothing can yet. But I just pre-ordered one for my wife. She's bright but is definitely tech-challenged and it will be her first smartphone. Because of that I wanted to give her something easy to use and that she could get help with if I'm not around. Nokia stores and support are non-existent in the US. No one she knows but me knows squat about Maemo/MeeGo or Linux. But T-Mobile stores are everywhere and several other family members are familiar with Android.

Plus, the G2 runs vanilla Froyo 2.2 in a nice, reasonable-size package with all the features she'll ever need. Real keyboard, HSPA+ go-fast speed, etc...should be a nice unit for her purposes.

As for me, I could never go Android again. I'll get her onto a MeeGo phone sometime down the line...

The difference between Android and MeeGo is that Android feels like a very advanced mobile OS with many capabilities, while Maemo/MeeGo/Mer/Moblin feels more like a pocketable computer rather than an advanced smartphone that is the difference in my opinion. I think the G2 is better than n900 in terms of hardware yes it doesn't have the fancy stuff the n900 has but it does have a real keyboard that very well spaced while managing to be thing, the device is made out of metal and a mixture of other materials and the screen is made of glass instead of plastic so the device should be well built, the device has excellent battery life 16.5 days of standby and 6.5hours of talktime over 3g. The device can also do 720p HD video recording and playback. I think if your looking for a device to be someone's first smartphone I think you should take a look at the Nokia e73 mode or Blackberry Bold, Android might be too complicated for them.

Maybe I can finally replace my Motorola Razr v3 (by the way still one of the best phone ever made) and my Nokia n810.

Well my G2 will be here tomorrow. And im happy as I can be but until nokia show me what they going to do with meego and thr support than android is the next best thing. I never been an android hater at all if anything I tip my hat for how far along it has came in a short period of time. Like I said I'm still keep my N900 and still use it. But at this point in time I just need a phone that just works. As of late the N900 been acting wacky.

My G2 just came and man does it feel solid. Like the metal touch to it. Slides real nice and smooth and the four keyboard is nice. More on it when It's fully charged.
