Re: Hey Nokia, why don't you revive the N-Gage brand and start bringing some serious pwnage to the Maemo/MeeGo platform?
One of the N-gages big problems was the fact thaht it was a little too "open". Piracy was so rife with those phones that they made the Dreamcast look like the Pentagons mainframe system :)
Awesome phones though |

Nokia actually tried to market N-Gage. One of its major problems then was product design. The much lampooned "sidetalking" killed the devices as phones, and the placement of the game cartridge slot behind the battery (plus a weak game lineup) killed the devices as portable game systems. Additionally, during the time of the N-Gage devices, gaming wasn't as socially acceptable for adults as it is now. At the same time, people weren't yet commonly purchasing mobile phones for children. So, there wasn't much of a market. Now, gaming on mobile devices is considerably more socially acceptable (at least for casual games) and support for it on devices has become a given. I can't see a clear need for a gaming brand on a given set of phones, unless you're bringing an established name over from the gaming world: Xbox or PSP Phone, for instance. Nokia needs to provide a good gaming experience on their devices, particularly the highish end ones. They also need to gather a good line up of titles. What they don't need is N-Gage. |

My thoughts on this is.. leave N-Gage alone.. Just add community services to the games (Ovi Games).. try to get the developers to use that service too... So basically, kind of like maybe Crystal for Angry Birds.. :) |

Regarding the fail smell on N-Gage, Nokia as a whole hasn't been all that pleasing either lately; personally i wouldn't mind giving the N-Gage brand another chance, specially if Nokia doesn't screw it up this time. Personally i got more bad memories associated with "OVI" than N-Gage. Regarding piracy, the whole PC software industry has grown all these years even with the piracy going on, if anything, the easiness of copying PC software helped lots of brands to get known and popular, even Windows wouldn't be as popular and widespread as it is today if from early on there wasn't lots of people copying and installing it everywhere. Contrary to the misguided propaganda by big record companies and movie studios, piracy doesn't hurt busyness, and in many cases, it even helps it. |

it probably is too painful to retry it, first N-Gage came in 2003, no-one was ready for it except 4 guys. Then they tried again 2007-2008 with no luck. http://gizmodo.com/233966/its-offici...s-in-september I'd say now it is the safest bet to wait for a while and see how winmo7 gets started with gaming and if playstation phone ever arrives to retail stores.... |

How's that software library for ovistore working out for your N900? Does it compete well with game consoles for downloadable game libraries? Are the miserably broken experiences people complained about with OviStore fixed yet (payment problems, developers having a hard time getting in, etc.)? |
Re: Hey Nokia, why don't you revive the N-Gage brand and start bringing some serious pwnage to the Maemo/MeeGo platform?
yeah they are all fixed.
no one is buying there any more..... |
