What does it say when you do:
df -h
on CLI?

Yes, because currently I do not quite understand what memory your are short of. Maybe root fs is too full to load deb-files?

Operation failed ..... (what?)
What is the full error message?

If you do:
df -h / ; du -sh /var/cache/apt/archives
...and put the full given output here, we may know the problem is that your rootfs is just too full to receive big deb-package. (Then it will help to soft link archives directory momentarily to /home/user/MyDocs/archives

just hexedit the emmc image (i have mine at 5gb) and reflash - to me it is hte most simple and least dangerous. Just spend an evening backing up and restoring and rebackup your stuff.

You only have to do it once after all.

He is installing bigsized games on his n900. So the 2GB home partition is filling up and becoming full since it's just 2GB. Transferring those games on a vfat partition would render it useless since you need execute permissions to play it which means it needs to be on a ext3 filesystem which is limited to 2GB.
