You have probably installed this add-on:
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/mob.../proxy-mobile/

The developer hasn't yet tested this add-on with 4.0b5 or later and marked it compatible. If you want to use it anyway, you can override the compatibility check using Beta Tester Tools (pre-installed in official beta releases) or Nightly Tester Tools:
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/mob...ols-for-mobil/

Or you can set proxy options by entering "about:config" in the address bar.

Interesting! But, the name of the executable for the official Firefox Mobile release is still "fennec"; at, least, it is on my n900. (I'm still using Firefox Mobile 1.1, I've been wary about playing with the betas just yet.)

Does the "easy setup" mode work for you (where you enter a 12-letter code into desktop Firefox)?

I think there is at least one similar bug report in Bugzilla. I think it propably happens only if you previously had the Sync add-on for Firefox 1.1 installed.

Anyway it seems it somehow managed to fix itself, and now it syncs. Not really sure what happened, is it using the configuration left from the older version.

Anyway I think it's important to test this use case where the user upgrades from older Fennec with the Sync add-on.

What is the difference between the GDK and the QT versions of mobile firefox? Which is better for the N900?

The GTK version is the one that we officially release and support for Maemo 5 (N900). The Qt version is still in development, not officially supported yet, but it will eventually become the official version for Maemo 6 / MeeGo.

I've heard that the Qt version is "faster" - but I haven't done any rigorous testing to know for sure.

There are repos here - use the "trunk" version for your language if you want to get Firefox 4 builds:
