Ok, I think I've solved it. I took my memory card out, plugged it into my laptop and formatted it. They seem to have gone now.

If the same happens in future then root umount /media/mmc1 fsck.vfat -a /dev/mmcblk1p1 mount /dev/mmcblk1p1 /media/mmc1 no reboot in this case. And also there wasn't need to format it though checkdisk via pc on memory card would have solved that:) |

seems not many people are aware of the beauty of scan and fix option in windows.
it gets rid of all dodgy files and bad sectors and puts them in a folder ready for deletion :) |
