Ok, I think I've solved it. I took my memory card out, plugged it into my laptop and formatted it. They seem to have gone now.

The little ones that look like a broken thumbnail are the ones I'm trying to get rid of them. When I try to delete, it says "unable to delete", when I try to view details, it says "details not available" and when I try to view the images, it says "Image no longer available".

connect your phone to pc in mass storage mode and goto properties of phone or memory card (in whom the files are) and select tools and checkdisk it.It seems to be case to memory becomming corrupt due to unsafe removal.

Thanks for the suggestion. If they come back I'll try that :)

If formatting ur memory card solved it then ur memory card was the culprit.

If the same happens in future then
root
umount /media/mmc1
fsck.vfat -a /dev/mmcblk1p1
mount /dev/mmcblk1p1 /media/mmc1

no reboot in this case.
And also there wasn't need to format it though checkdisk via pc on memory card would have solved that:)

seems not many people are aware of the beauty of scan and fix option in windows.

it gets rid of all dodgy files and bad sectors and puts them in a folder ready for deletion :)
