The opposite is true, please share with us your truth!

Since Meego has not been released yet, I was unable to form an opinion on the OS, including whether it can compete with Android or not.

With Maemo this can be done however, so please elaborate, how is Maemo years behind Android except for maybe, say, voice guided navigation (although some hacks are available for Nokia Maps that enable this feature)?

Also, if the TS did not intent this discussion please ignore my post ;)

Phones became so smart that people couldn't use them properly - TooSmartPhones. Thats why iOS is popular, thats why windows mobile 7 was released without multitasking, thats why android is killing running apps as he likes.

They created mobile phones that were computers and it was too much (orginal windows mobile, old symbians, even present symbian).
Smartphones became more stupid again and now they are trying to figure out how to add more power to os in a way that will be accessible for 'normal' people.

We are using N900 and we are not normal people!:)
Anyway i do think that there is place for open, pc like os on the market.
For now maemo is the best anserw but still not perfect. I hope MeeGo will become powerful, open, limitless operating system for the future.

PS. i have to admit that i sometimes miss in maemo smoothness and better looking apps :p

PS2. We should create petition to Nokia for opening up Maemo source. They wouldn't loose nothing on it and make us all happy:)

Re: Maemo - Android Rant (only small)

Thanks for this thread. I was wondering what I would do if my n900 died one day. Only looked at other people's iPhones & Androids - a couple of times they need it to do something & they don't know how, and for some reason they hand it to me (who knows nothing about them) and ask me to figure it out for them. My impression was that it is easy to find your way around, and download apps - but like somebody else here, I do wonder what all the apps they have are for. The biggest thing I miss is something to read and write word documents in Maemo - but I can have that with Open Office on Easy Debian (I'd prefer something like Ubuntu or Fedora, and Libre Office, but hey, I ain't complaining). Anyway (says this is a rant, so guess it is On Topic to rant on), I was not inspired by either of them. I have four screens, with the Milky Way stretched across the four, with the launcher icons and stuff placed in groups where I want them, at the top and bottom of the screen, so I get the luminous part of the galaxy showing, and the bigger widgets at screens 1 & 4, the outer arms of the galaxy. That is pretty neat in my book. So, maybe WebOS, or MeeGo, one day. If we can have a kind of Maemo on top of a MeeGo core, a kind of pukka linux, and despite my frustrations a couple of months ago, if this does happen, then I'll be happy. If it finds its way onto a new phone with keyboard, then I might go for that. But not if the screen is so small. The n810, in terms of dimensions, was better - easier to look at, better size keys/keyboard, slimmer. But, for a bigger screen and keyboard, even if it were as fat as the n900, that would be fine. I'm no lover of the terminal - I used to be, but I got lazy and have trouble retaining all that stuff as I get older. Can't say the look of apps has bothered me. But then black is my favourite non-colour, so most stuff ends up black anyway with me anyway, apart from text. The more I hear about WebOS, the more tempted I am. I think if nobody comes up with a decent (and available) linux tablet computer soon, I'm going to have to look at an HP one eventually. I don't think I will be able to take MeeGo seriously until they get rid of those badly drawn cartoon characters. I really don't get that, and it puts me off.

I expect somebody will tell me I am ignorant now.

I have always had a similar opinion - that I would switch to android after maemo. I figured there were more apps, and generally a better experience. After I installed it though, I was kind of bored, and honestly didn't find many apps that my n900 didn't have.

Maybe it is an issue of power users vs not like someone mentioned above. Regular users want what we call a 'boring' phone. They want to be able to make calls, use a few apps, text, and that's really it. We want a mobile computer.

But right now Maemo / Meego are years behind Android.

You're right, I'm an ignorant. I haven't used Android much time (Nitdroid only two days and when my friends lent me their phones) so can you help me? What does Android do that Maemo doesn't?

Has better memory management or multitasking or whatever? I don't know. Today it's possible (Google has been working hard) but two years ago, when Nokia killed Maemo, it weren't.

I think that Android is a good OS, I'm going to install it on my sister's phone (HTC HD 2) and my next phone will have Android, but I'm sure that if Nokia hadn't killed Maemo and used it as the main OS for their phones (and their developers adding features and debugging), today it would be the best OS.

For me it sometimes seems there's no real alternative either.

As I said in another thread, when/if my N900 breaks/gets stolen, if theres nothing new out by Nokia under Maemo/Meego that I like/can afford, im getting another N900.

Hope the new hardware they bring out looks as "nice" and "basic" as the N900. I hate weird shapes, too thin phones. I would rather not capacitive, too.

Re: Maemo - Android Rant (only small)

Well I am not going to repeat the same thing as the majority though it's also my opinion (installed nitdroid in october and get bored in about two weeks, installed the rc3 too and using it only to play chess, my daughter has an galaxy gti7500 with froyo installed so I get used to know a little bit of android) but I would like to know the thoughts of someone who made the android to maemo road without knowing maemo before. Does he have the same feeling as most of us ??
And anyway I think that is not bad having more and more OS options outhere...the more choices we have the better should be....
