Well, 770 cost one ARM, and 800 cost other ARM, I am down to legs anyway?

I'm always on scratchbox compiling away new apps to install on my N800.
Must say the only drawback for me is the whole hildonizing that needs to be done to the applications after you find one that compiles and work.

I look past having to hildon the apps I compile, because I don't know how to go about doing it. Tried, but fail everytime I do.

waiting on ubuntu to drop the embedded OS.
Hopefully I can install it on MMC.

the device is a developers best friend, well close to being it.
As for regular users, if you spend some time on here, maemo.org, and the irc channel. You should have no problems, finding and installing descent hildonized applications.

Ha! Merely a flesh wound.

Come back here and I'll bite your head off...

Gotta love the Search for the Holy Grail. Or is that the perfect IT?

But my .02, I am enjoying learning about Linux and how to best use this IT for me. Pretty much what I expected of Linux, but what do I know as just a n00b? As far as original poster, glad you can find some utility from your IT and this form. I thank you for not going ballistic on your rant. Venting doesn't hurt as long as you don't YELL or spew venom.

Be well...

Re: Anyone else feel ripped off

Let me post my opinion. I bought the 770 because i wanted a small device to surf the web and read my mails. ARM? Linux? Do i care? As long as it works.
One month later i bought the N800 for the camera (bad choice, camera does nothing, haven't used it ever, unfortunately) and for the raving reviews compared to the 770 (i guess that's all relative as well).
So i bought it to surf the web. Now i not only surf the web, but i make phonecalls, i use it as my PDA, i watch videos and listen to the FM and/or Internet radio stations (no MP3's for me), read my e-books and PDF's on the thing. Occasionally i use Maemo Mapper (still no TomTom replacement), i even start to understand something about Metasploit, nmap, DNS Tunneling.
Ans yes, i've met the Linux side of the IT as well, but do i really care? No!! I just found out that my IT can do a lot more than just surfing the web and i'm loving it.

I hope they will NEVER make this a Linux tablet. <hiding> I never got or will get used to work with Linux.

Just my experience.

Ton.

Edit: Ah, i would LOVE to see a step-by-step Compile your Linux sources for the N800 and Hildonize them for Dummies guide. I still have some wishes to be fullfilled.

Ignoring the fact that there's going to be neither Ubuntu Mobile nor Ubuntu Embedded for the 770/N800, you expect to be able to cross-compile applications for such a small screen (no matter what the resolution) and have them usable without any further work? You're living in a dream world...

Now, much of the basic Hildonisation could be done at the Gtk+ level, rather than the application level; but this would require a *lot* more work to get it upstream or a redesign of the core of Hildon.

If anyone *does* fancy recompiling Gtk+ at any point, get in touch, I've got a few ideas for you (they may even get upstream)...

Have you tried openbox? That makes it so you do not need to hildonize your app to run it, you can run both hildon and openbox, just switch back and forth. It would at least give you more functionality until you hildonize, might be a good way to test and see if you want to continue the effort to hildonize?
