I can say for sure that the N800 looses all wireless connectivity when in the presence of certain draft-N access points. (Dlink for sure.) It just simply goes blind.

Are you sure you don't have an 'N' AP nearby?

I don't think that there are any draft N routers in the vicinity, but there is a DLink VWR, but this is a Vonage/802.11g router combo that is used in the basement by my bro.

There are 2 other SSID's my PC detects which are from the neighbours. I tried to use iStumbler to see if it could tell me the vendor, but no luck. Anyway to tell?

My WiFi bug...? Not sure I have one... :) Or do you mean the WiFi timeout issue - it could be due to that I suppose.

Assuming it's not due to the timeout issue, I think it needs to be fully diagnosed by Nokia, but since this is most likely an environmental problem specific to the owners it may be impossible for Nokia to reproduce (at least without further info).

By opening a bug in Bugzilla I would hope (naiively) that Nokia would ask relevant questions of the reporters, perhaps asking them to execute various WiFi commands in xterm which may pin point where the problem lies. I did just this with Johan Hedberg in bug #865 and we identified the problem with Bluetooth and had it fixed in a later firmware. A much more satisfying conclusion than returning my N800 for a refund, and one which also may have benefited other users too! :)

Ah yes, sorry - I'm just going through a slightly negative phase over the last week or so... my beloved football club Chelsea have sacked the best football manager in the world (though some might disagree!), Scotland got thrashed in the rubgy world cup, some annoying work issues, and I'm just fearful that after 2+ years any significant changes in Nokia attitude are still not apparent, and my patience is wearing thinner while those rather tasty looking Intel MIDs loom ever larger.

I've also been questioning why anyone should bother investing their own time with an outfit like Nokia who care more about keeping secrets than open and transparent communication, and I've yet to come up with a good answer. :(

For my first post here, I hope that I didn't go too far. Don't get me wrong, I love my N800 and can't wait to get it back from the Nokia Repair Center.

I think that I was suffering from a failed network card/antennae because the WIFI still didn't work after reinstalling the OS via Update Wizard. I would think that the reinstall would clear any bugs in the software. The WIFI had been working great for months.

I'll let everyone know what the repair center comes back to me with...

Ok, this is so wicked. I did a test by walking around my house with the N800 searching for access points and 3 houses before mine, maybe less than 50 feet away, all the access points disappear. I backtrack a few feet and i can locate several SSID's in the neighbourhood. Basicall as i am walking towards my house, i get to a certain point and the the N800 just goes "wifi blind".

So the problem is not the N800, but there is something that kills it from finding any access points less than 50 feet from the steps of my house. What the heck? COuld it be the powerlines, some bad "juju", nextel phones with all their buzzing radiations...i know i'm grasping at straws here, but i am so darned frustrated !!
The only way i can browse the web in my house is through bluetooth.


Regarding your request as to the MAC addresses of the access points, what can you tell from the MAC addresses?
