Re: The itT Canola2 Beta discussion thread

Just a thanks to handful and everyone at IDT, the look and feel is outstanding.

As I'm to understand it, this is still the beta and I'd like ask or comment on a few of the features and impressions that I've found while I've had playing with it just for the past few mins.

1-Under Video and also in the setup, I see no place to add Videocasts, (though it seems one can do this in the Podcast and Podcast setup) is this Nokia's or Canola's descision to keep Canola somewhat seperate from VideoCenter, or since this is understandably still the beta, just a feature (menu item) not yet added ?

2.-When downloading Podcasts and or Videocasts, it seems that it errors out quite often/or quickly, is this a case of an "adjustable" time-out issue ? So the app, does not hang unintentionally ?

If so is there or will there be a setting for the user to manually change it ?

Nope, mine was really slow and for a few mins I thought for sure it would error out but then it installed, patience (for which I have none) I guess has been a very useful thing these past few days with the repositories..

Damn servers must be down or under heavy traffic. Any mirrors?

GreySim 2007-12-20 12:49

Re: The itT Canola2 Beta discussion thread

anidel: Look on the bright side; at least you have the opportunity of installing it at all. It's really agonizing to have seen videos of it running on the 770, see that it's been released, and yet find out that while everyone else gets to play with it finally, 770 users are still out of luck. :(

(Not angry or anything. Just sad. Very, very sad.)

anidel 2007-12-20 12:55

Re: The itT Canola2 Beta discussion thread

I am installing it also on a 770 with latest HE.
I'll report how it behaves.

Trying to get it on the N810 ... servers are slammed but I'm just happy it's out!

Re: The itT Canola2 Beta discussion thread

visit http://repository.maemo.org/extras/

it says "The service is temporarily unavailable. We are very sorry for the inconvinience it may cause."

On the Canola2 web site.

Re: The itT Canola2 Beta discussion thread

http://openbossa.indt.org/canola2/ Yes Canola2 beta is out, just installed it on my N800 with the OS 2008 beta :)

Because of current Nokia repository "package update" issues I temporarily switched each repository off in application manager, then downloaded base and Canola2 via the above address and the install options at bottom of this page http://openbossa.indt.org/canola2/install.html

Its slow atm but it works :)

---edit1---

It has been suggested by the Canola team that those familiar with IRC should join Freenode and #canola and then user thoughts can be immediately digested by the team.

For IRC I am using xchat2 on my XP PC and found it very easy to get up and running.

A beta of xchat is also available for the N800 and chinook which seems to work well, download here

---edit2---

If you find any bugs or have enhancement ideas report them here

The opinion on IRC is that:

<marcelo> Arin: yes.. it sucks, but I think the servers will go full ok soon, and everyone will be able to test it

konttori 2007-12-20 15:08

Re: The itT Canola2 Beta discussion thread

I've been testing it a bit now and I've got to say that I'm impressed. Really nice stuff. It would be good if the default setup would assume image and music indexing from all locations.

A little bit jerky at times, but wonderful! Kudos INdT!

Is anyone else having trouble adding media? I have it watching my music folder but it doesn't seem to be picking anything up?

rcadden 2007-12-20 15:12

Re: The itT Canola2 Beta discussion thread

How the hell are you guys actually getting it to install? I'm on a dead-fresh install (no backup restore, just reinstalled the firmware and went straight to canola) and can't get anything other than a "installation file corrupted" on it.

PinCushionQueen 2007-12-20 15:13

Re: The itT Canola2 Beta discussion thread

Any of you guys that already have the package, care to share? I believe the Canola servers are being hammered (as is everything else these days). I've been trying to grab the package for over an hour to no avail :(

Dopehead.NL 2007-12-20 15:14

Re: The itT Canola2 Beta discussion thread

AArrrgh, the download window just sits there doing nothing, it drives me crazy.....
Dont tell me you guys did not anticipate this tidlewave of download requests.....

GreySim 2007-12-20 15:16

Re: The itT Canola2 Beta discussion thread

If I'm not mistaken, Canola is actually in the normal maemo.org repositories, so that's why it's so slow right now. I could be wrong though, but I'm halfway through with the download, and I'm not canceling it to check the repo list. :P

Hi Konttori,

Actually while this works for a lot of users, at least in the bet we are avoiding it because we don't want photos to index maps, or some hidden stuff.. this was REALLY a serious problem in the first version and a lot of people complained, also this made the loading / database time go really high. For me, as interaction designer hurts to do that because I want the best experience for the user. But at the same time... if a bad thing happens people can be really mean (like on canola1)

We actually didn't have time to fully optimize it, but I think we will reduce the jerkyness, also there's some spots on the screen where we placed a special scroll that doesn't work the way it should (duh)

Rcadden : looks that the repositories still down : / or not working properly but they are Maemo's so we cannot "mess" with those servers, but for sure the maemo guys are working to put it back in full order it was like that yesterday.

Abs

Marcelo

Re: The itT Canola2 Beta discussion thread

In Settings, I have clicked on the 'view' icon on a folder that has images on my memory card. I saw the refreshing library message. From the main page, I hit Photos->My Photos and it says No Items Found.

Same with videos. I know that the internal Video Clips folder contain the Nokia N810 ad video but Canola can't find it.

Anything I'm missing?

Dopehead.NL 2007-12-20 15:32

Re: The itT Canola2 Beta discussion thread

One thing you are not missing, Reggie, is the .deb file.
Can you please upload it somewhere ?

rcadden 2007-12-20 15:34

Re: The itT Canola2 Beta discussion thread

Before it was at least attempting to download the file. Now in app manager, it's not even doing that.

Canola installation failed after about 20 minutes... will try once more and then give up till the servers are fixed.

Ok, for some reason, it's fixed! I wonder what happened? The only difference is now I'm at the office and my wifi connection is now off.

Marcelo, the thumbnail loading is not bad at all. It's not slow at all.

Anyway, first bugs:
1. when watching a video, lower down volume to almost zero, press pause, and the hit play. Volume seems to go back to mid-level.
2. Can't find a way to watch the video in full screen. double tap doesn't work.

Some comments/suggestions:
1. Please add in settings, delay in seconds for the image slideshow.
2. Instead of an 'eye' icon for adding a folder to the library, why not use a '+' and a '-'. I didn't get it at first what the eye icon was.

wjanowski 2007-12-20 15:46

Re: The itT Canola2 Beta discussion thread

Reggie: My experience was similar. For some reason, it seems to be doing something in the background after it scans your folders that keeps it from displaying the results for several minutes. For those of you where its not finding your media, let it sit for a few and check it again.
