It sounds like it should be a bug - raise it on http://bugs.maemo.org/ in the Communication > Modest category.

Re: Modest Beta for OS2008 Now Out

Well, I had great hope for modest, but, besides not implementing a good imap model (unfortunately most mail programs, modest included, implement imap as a glorified pop), it simply cannot cope with large folders (waiting 10 minutes to enter a folder with 30000 messages, after waiting an hour for the initial headers dowload, isn't my kind of fun).
Anybody interested in hildonizing mulberry?

I have no clue what you're talking about - Modest was designed from the ground up to be two things: light on memory, and use the full range of IMAP capabilities.

The developer FREQUENTLY tests folder sizes upwards of 10,000 messages. All his screenshots demonstrating new features include folders of 30,000 messages.

I suspect that if you're experiencing problems it's probably a bug specific to your setup. I know that I've run into stability problems in combination with Lotus Notes IMAP servers, but that's more likely Lotus Notes' fault, since they don't seem to be able to adhere to any standard.

Since my server is cyrus (one of the best ones around) and I have no problem with thunderbird and mulberry on a pc, and claws works fine albeit slowly on the tablet, I suspect modest is to blame. Besides, a real imap client, like mulberry, should just download enough headers to fill the screen, not the whole 30000, especially on a constrained device like the tablet (e.g. mulberry is an order of magnitude faster than thunderbird, while being an order of magnitude leaner)

a new version just popped up on my application manager. Anybody know where I could find a changelog?

Re: Modest Beta for OS2008 Now Out

i guess im the only person in the world that doesnt keep all his email...lol i typically delete msgs as i read them , the thing i like best about modest is the inbox view where it lets me see the subject and sender without it being cutoff like in the standard client

Re: Modest Beta for OS2008 Now Out

does this latest version fully replace the standard e-mail client yet?

Re: Modest Beta for OS2008 Now Out

So... I'm still wondering. If this installs as E-mail, how do you remove the prior version?

So far, I'm impressed with it's IMAP implementation - read: it works - and I want to remove the other mail... because I'll honestly never use it.

Re: Modest Beta for OS2008 Now Out

My only complaint about modest currently is that it does not render remote images, otherwise than that it is a great improvement on the built-in client. I would like to know when this will be fixed/implemented as this will make it a great client.

Re: Modest Beta for OS2008 Now Out

I have the same problem as I had with previous version: Modest crashes when 810 is online AND at least one IMAP account is defined in the program.

Re: Modest Beta for OS2008 Now Out

I have not been able to find a list of what features modest currently has or what it will have when released. Can anybody tell me if modest currently deletes email from the server when deleted from the tablet? I want to leave my email on the server unless I delete it, like I do with the current email client. Whithout this feature modest will be useless to me. I hate having to go through the same junk email twice to delete it.

What I would like to have is for the email to have deleted folder and for the mail to stay on the server until I delete it from the deleted folder.

I stopped using Claws for email because it was missing this feature also.

Any other email program for the tablet does support deleting email from the server when delete locally?

gerbick 2008-01-14 01:52

Re: Modest Beta for OS2008 Now Out

Once deleted, it seems to delete from server. I just took two messages, deleted message, and they were not in the Trash folder on the server. Nor on the tablet.

To me... that's a slight problem. I'd rather they move to the Trash folder so that in case I make a mistake while traveling, then I'll be able to move them in case I "fat finger" the files.

But no room for rules quite yet...

Re: Modest Beta for OS2008 Now Out

I 90% like Modest.

But, it doesn't recognize all of my sub-folders (it recognized ONE of my nested folder groups, the first one alphabetically, but none of the others).

And I wish it would let me see both of my accounts at the same time.

Otherwise 1000% improvement over the existing built-in email client.

Re: Modest Beta for OS2008 Now Out

i agree that it needs to have the option to display more than one account at a time in the inbox and to refresh all accounts when you hit the button on the inbox , not have to go thru the menu and hit send / receive all thats a real pain in the ***

johnkzin 2008-01-14 19:02

Re: Modest Beta for OS2008 Now Out

I don't want to see all of my accounts under 1 inbox. That'd be ugly.

I want to see multiple account trees.

Right now, you get something like this:

Account
  • Inbox
  • Folder A
  • Folder B

Local Folders
  • Folder C
  • Folder D

Removable Memory Card
  • Archive

... which is all well and good, but if you have multiple accounts, you have to pick which _ONE_ account to view at a time. What I should have is this:

Account 1 (home)
  • Inbox
  • Folder A
  • Folder B

Account 2 (work)
  • Inbox
  • Folder C
  • Folder D

Local Folders
  • Folder E
  • Folder F

Removable Memory Card
  • Archive

thanks for the feedback. It sounds like you have an IMAP setup. I am working under pop3. I will take even what the current mail reader has. I am just afraid it is going the way of claws mail and will only give me the all or nothing.

johnkzin 2008-01-14 22:46

Re: Modest Beta for OS2008 Now Out

I hadn't tried deleting anything in modest yet ... yeah, I'm a "move to the trash folder" kinda person, not a "delete in place" kinda person. So, I hope they move to supporting that choice of deleting files.

(and, I too am on IMAP, and not POP)

johnkzin 2008-01-14 22:47

Re: Modest Beta for OS2008 Now Out

I'm also not worried about client side filtering rules. I do all of that server-side (that way I don't have to duplicate my rules across multiple clients).

Yep... sorry I didn't state that I was using IMAP earlier. It's the sole reason I'm looking past the original built-in e-mail app.

So... anyway to get this to be the default program yet? Somebody has got to know - and searching here isn't turning up true positives.

No, it'll be the default mail client when it's good and ready. For now, the ties just aren't all there yet.

Re: Modest Beta for OS2008 Now Out

ah, ok. sometimes the tablet gets confused and tries to create e-mail in the default app.

Re: Modest Beta for OS2008 Now Out

I there a way in modest for me to group contacts or somehow email a group of contacts without individually click each one in the compose email window?

Secondly, when i first start the program it will retrieve message and then say no messages to view but all i need to do is click a different folder and go back and it'll refresh and all my messages will be available again. This is using IMAP at aim.com. Anybody notice this?

Sai

Re: Modest Beta for OS2008 Now Out

Is there a way to have modest automatically check for new messages from only some/selected accounts? Now it seems to check for messages from all accounts. I'd like to haved the option of disabling checking work emails at night. Can this be done?

Re: Modest Beta for OS2008 Now Out

I noticed something in Modest that I don't know if it is a known issue or not. I added my gmail account just fine. However when I tap on the Gmail root node in the tree list (the one with the globe icon next to it) and on the right hand side it says I have 77 messages, when I have no messages at all in my inbox or any other folder under that gmail node.

Re: Modest Beta for OS2008 Now Out

For modest, imap and gmail, I seem to be getting an username and password settings wrong. The username and email address should be the same right? (username@gmail.com), the password is the gmail password and the account name you can enter whatever right?

Re: Modest Beta for OS2008 Now Out

I've been using Modest for a while and I'm quite impressed.

Currently I'm experimenting with the IMAP-IDLE feature. My mailserver supports it and it works flawlessy in Modest when its open. The noftification for new email comes instantly.

But this does not seem so work when Modest is closed and running in the background.

Can anyone confirm this behaviour?

Thanks and Regards...
softcat

I use gmail with Modest and it notifies me if I have new mail when Modest is closed.

Re: Modest Beta for OS2008 Now Out

hmmm there seems to be quite a few unanswered questions. Has the developer been busy w/ work or something? seems kinda quite these days. not just this thread but most threads seem quiet.

Re: Modest Beta for OS2008 Now Out

ive tried using modest with many different email addresses and always have some kind of problem with it , the main problem seems to be that even though it isnt the default program its tied to it too much , just really want the finger friendly interface is its main selling point for me. still cant figure out the certificate problem when using gmail

Re: Modest Beta for OS2008 Now Out

I realize it's beta, but it's a real hassle to have the old App keep rising from the dead. I deleted all of my old accounts so that I can at least recognize the old app when it complains of not having any configured accounts.

I'm about ready to start hacking dbus calls. I want Modest to be the default.

Re: Modest Beta for OS2008 Now Out

I have the exact same problem: at seemingly random times, the old program pops up the "new mail" notification...really strange and random. It'd be great if there was at least some temporary hack we could do to really make sure Modest is the only app that ever checks for new mail.

mobiledivide 2008-03-12 16:10

Re: Modest Beta for OS2008 Now Out

I really have no problems, but I think thats probably because I never even tried to set up the old client. When clicking on an email link in a webpage the old client does pop up, but its not too much of a hassle for me to just close it. It's almost ready in terms of usability. I definitely use it a lot more since I got the N810 with the keyboard.

Re: Modest Beta for OS2008 Now Out

Just a warning, my system got toasted when I updated to the latest Modest (March 10, 2008) through the Application Manager (non Red Pill mode). I started getting constant "Internal Error: Application 'E-Mail' closed" messages in the middle of doing other stuff, like watching video or whatever.

I had to revert back to the old version (Feb 29) manually, and now everything's fine again.

Re: Modest Beta for OS2008 Now Out

Ok, so I did a search here on ITT for "modest graphics" and got nothing.

I asked on the modest-users mailing list, no response.

Will Modest eventually support inline graphics in emails?
I understand it is designed to be "lean 'n' mean", but sometimes it would be nice to have graphics displayed in an email.

Thanks.

I'm having the identical problem.

Any time it's check with it's automagic background mode. Same here. It's every 5 minutes or so for me, but that's what I have my check interval set to.

this latest release of modest is totally F.U.B.A.R..... i dont understand why the big finger friendly interface cant be integrated into the built in client and that be the end of it.

Becuase osso-email is a half-baked piece of garbage.

Remember, children, Modest is beta in the non-google sense of the word.
