Re: n810 USB adapter and host mode made easy
I'm trying to get a business card scanner working, but even through a powered hub the n810 keeps rebooting. Anyone have any ideas?

Re: n810 USB adapter and host mode made easy
can you use a 3g USB modem this way ?

Re: n810 USB adapter and host mode made easy
Just found the exact cable I was looking for: a USB micro A to standard female A, 7.5 cm.
This cable lets you plug in a keyboard, flash drive, etc. and causes the N810 to automatically switch to host mode when used. Part # H11576-ND and about $9 from Digi-Key: http://search.digikey.com/scripts/Dk...name=H11576-ND |
Re: n810 USB adapter and host mode made easy
So, if you have a bunch of movie files on a flash drive, the Nokia will play it using usb control as a bridge? Could I get Mplayer to play divx on a flash drive using usb control?

http://www.electronicproductonline.c...hp?cPath=35_67 and the adapter is: http://www.electronicproductonline.c...1663b1a104406d so you can rotate the female USB jack around behind the tablet WITHOUT stressing the tablet's connector mechanically. Plug n Play. You plug it in and the tablet goes in OTG/Host mode. You unplug it and the tablet goes back to normal. No software to install and suck up memory...nothing to "run". I use it with USB drives, a rubber rollup USB keyboard, a 1TB Western Digital Mybook USB hard drive, the Linksys USB100M Ethernet-to-USB adapter (USB200M WILL NOT WORK!), and a LiteOn USB DVD/CD burner, but it doesn't burn, just reads. Ignore the non-compatible and no file system found error messages. Typing over rdesktop to my PC remotely with a full Windows keyboard lets all the function keys on the WinXP box work remotely. Typing on the rubber keyboard is MUCH better than a bluetooth flogging along. |

http://www.electronicproductonline.c...oducts_id=2043 It's plugged into a 1TB Western Digital hard drive and both media player and mplayer access it, directly, very fast. I like the hardware solution as there's nothing to load into what little memory it has. Divx movies used to stutter with the software USB Host switches, but this hardware dongle doesn't max out the CPU gage playing DivX, now. Hope this helps....but mine are both N800's under Diablo. What's crazy is I can load one of the 16GB SDHC cards in it FASTER plugging the big USB drive into the tablet's dongle, than the WinXP much faster box can load the 16GB SDHC plugged into a USB2 card adapter. Go figure...??? |

Thanks for the info, which suggests the problem is not in the tablet. It looks like it will be worth running tests swapping different components to track down my problem.

Re: n810 USB adapter and host mode made easy
Is there a USB OTG swivel adapter for the microUSB port on the n810? I'm only seeing n800 (miniUSB) versions.
|
Re: n810 USB adapter and host mode made easy
Unfortunately there's no swivel adapter for the microUSB port (the costs at the time I had the adapters made for MicroUSB was about twice as high, so...); you can use the same adapter in combination with the MicroUSB/MiniUSB converter cable (it's not quite as awesome but it does work):

Re: n810 USB adapter and host mode made easy
My first post - so go easy with me :p
I think I've found the OTG cable us N810 users need. USB Micro male -> USB A female http://www.business2828.cn/photo/ima...host/main2.jpg I've no affliation with the seller, apart from I've just bought one Check out eBay item 250366571928 Hope it helps Andy PS All I need now is Mplayer to play AVI's on a pen-drive on the end of an OTG cable - is this possible ? |

Re: n810 USB adapter and host mode made easy
Sorry, but reading all your contributions I am still confused about how to get wired connection to the internet with my N810.
I connected a Motorola Micro USB to mini USB B adapter and further the N800 USB 360 OTG adapter and further the Linksys Etherfast 10/100 USB network adapter and connected this to the RJ45 cable coming from my router. After a while the tablet is announcing "Connection can not be established, file system not available." If I want to go to the internet the tablet always tries to use the WLAN connections available around. Can somebody help me to get wired connection established to the internet. Do I need some software installed?? |
Re: n810 USB adapter and host mode made easy
From above:

The above cable does not connect to the N810 - the N810 requires a _micro_ USB connector - this _mini_ must have been recommended by the author for the N800. I learned this the hard way, by ordering one, then noticing the difference. Hope this helps someone else. :) |
Re: n810 USB adapter and host mode made easy
Hi, I have an N800 and just found a female-usb to whatever the n800 uses. I run "pb" (penguinbait's great console-tools) to set OTG or HOST mode. I've tried with 6 different makes and models of pendrives, 3 mp3 players and 2 card readers. With the pendrives I always get "Unable to connect, no file system available", some are formatted FAT16 others ext2 and all have a led. With the mp3 I get a "device not supported", so I guess those would need a powered hub. And the card readers gave no sign of life, no light went on, the tablet didn't show the usb icon, no error message.
So, the question is, what is the next step? what information should I look for? Should I buy a powered hub? (this is the only use I could give it) thanks |

I received mine a few days ago (airmail from China), & it's great!! I took it to a conference with my N810 & very nice portable Addesso WKB-4000US keyboard. I connected the N810 car mount to the keyboard with a thin sheet of steel. (I also added a power switch to the keyboard to prevent keypresses in my bag from using up the batteries.) I did the entire conference with my N810, except for a slide presentation I had on google docs. [Ironically, the windoze laptop I borrowed for that blue screened ~6 min before I was to present.] The unusual N810 setup also had the positive side effect of opening up a lot of conversations. :) |

Re: n810 USB adapter and host mode made easy
hi,
Thanks for all the information in this thread. I want to use the USB connection from N810 to connect to my BB 8703e from Verizon and do tethered access to internet. I already have tethered data plan on the BB. can I just use the following commands from the BB forum to do this: Username: "<number>@vzw3g.com" *<number> is area code and number ex: 5555551212 Password: "vzw" Number to dial: "#777" 8) It will try to connect and more than likely fail, just click skip and setup connection anyways. one issue I can see is that connections from my N810 Control panel only shows the WLAN, GPRS and Data calls. How do I get the N810 to recognize the USB connection to the BB? Will going to host mode do it? I am still waiting for the USB cables to do this test. Any help is appreciated. Thanks, |
Re: n810 USB adapter and host mode made easy
How ridiculously hard to find sane priced Micro USB male to USB Type-A female!
Guys, I found this and it's only $2.45 and with shipping (at least to NY via first class USPS) it comes out to $4.51. http://www.pchcables.com/usbtyfetymib.html I ordered this just now and will post update when I get it. |
Re: n810 USB adapter and host mode made easy
I cannot get usb host to recognize any drive I have attached, I have tried micro SDHC adapter, Seagate 8gb external drive, Sandisk reader with MMC, SD, and SDHC cards, MacAlly firewire/USB drive enclosure, with powered hub attached, and with female to female usb adapters, FAT and EXT2 and EXT3 formatting.
I always get "Hostmode started.....usb device not supported...Unable to connect, no file system available." with each and every device permutation I have tried. I used the installers for USB Host and USB OTG from the OS2008 downloads page - but I have also tried the usb host commands into Terminal, same result. I do have gainroot installed. Please help!!! |
Re: n810 USB adapter and host mode made easy
Does anyone know if I might have any success of getting this to work on my N810 using one of the above mentioned adapters?: http://mobilephoneextreme.blogspot.c...usb-stick.html
With Google Voice my tablet could become my phone if I had access to a good internet connection at all times (ie: Verizon EVDO). |

Plug in the device and enable USB host mode. Use dmesg to look at the messages being reported from the kernel. You should see something like: Code:
sda: sda1 If the device is found by the kernel but is not being mounted automatically try mounting it yourself: as root, type 'mkdir /mnt/aaa && mount /dev/sda1 /mnt/aaa' (where sda1 is the device listed in the dmesg messages). Depending on how the device has been formatted, and whether you want to be able to access it as the normal user, you may need to play with options for the mount command. If dmesg is not showing that the device has been found, and it does not appear in /proc/partitions then you need to look at the dmesg output to see if you can work out what is going wrong. |

thanks a lot nhanquy for the valuable link. I installed both software updates and got the "wired" connection shown on the screen, but got no connection to the internet. I guess it is because I am using the Linksys USB100M adapter and most probably the power supply from the N810 is not sufficient. I will buy an externally powered USB hub and try again. Will let you know soon. Regards, |
