Re: Navit GPS (and libgarmin) for os2008
What happened to this project?. Itīs been months with no news, no routing support for garmin. Does anyone know if there is going to be an update soon or is the project totally dead?...
|
Re: Navit GPS (and libgarmin) for os2008
Looks like upstream is still doing stuff: http://navit.svn.sourceforge.net/vie...k/navit/navit/
I can't seem to find a navit-developers list, would be interesting to hear what the plans are. |
Re: Navit GPS (and libgarmin) for os2008
Some news for the maemo port last month :

Re: Navit GPS (and libgarmin) for os2008
Great!
I'm in the middle of setup. It would be a nice alternative to "map" application since MaemoMapper is unfortunately not usefull for me (every time I try to download a reasonable zoom - level for the whole country it asks about downloading insane amount of data (in gigabytes) - no match for vector maps - even for "map" application). |
Re: Navit GPS (and libgarmin) for os2008
Right, well I've compiled this from the current SVN, the maps work (which is good as they didn't the last time I tried). Would someone like to donate some debianisation to the project (or even as a patch just for us)?
Next plan is to compile for the desktop and work out how the "destination" dialog is supposed to work (as it still seems to do nothing). Any thoughts from people who've used this successfully (on a tablet or a PC)? |
Re: Navit GPS (and libgarmin) for os2008
Can I use the maps from Garmin Mobile XT with Navit GPS?
|
Re: Navit GPS (and libgarmin) for os2008
http://wiki.navit-project.org/index.php/Garmin_maps
Apparently they must be .img maps. Does that help? |
Re: Navit GPS (and libgarmin) for os2008
Yes, it does, greatly. Judging by the name/extension any recent Garmin-made maps for Mobile XT or PNAs should work. The 10Mb "world" map is actually included with the latest Mobile XT update files which are freely downloadable from Garmin web-site, so if you've got an app but no maps you can get a free world map from the Garmin web-site.

Re: Navit GPS (and libgarmin) for os2008
I tried Navit yesterday and found that, while it did display my location correctly on the OSM map I downloaded (a 30mb map .bin from OSM for my area), it really hogged the CPU and was very slow responding. I grabbed the .deb from Maemo garage, which was built using an older version of Navit than the wiki shows as the latest. Before I'd loaded the map, it was very responsive and seemed rather promising.
I was slightly put off that I could only get the GPS to display in Navit when I had the GPS location app running - if I closed that, the tablet (and Navit) lost connection to my GPS. I'll keep my eye on this project, it has a lot of potential. |

Re: Navit GPS (and libgarmin) for os2008
I just found this page, and I figured I'd add my results to the mix as a way of saying thank you.
I installed on my N810 via the deb packages and with downloaded bin maps from OSM. That went fine, editing the navit.xml file proved a little difficult so I ended up putting the edited file in a folder on mmc2. I also ran navit from the terminal prompt aka: navit /media/mmc2/maps/navit/navit.xml such that it ran my config file. This turned out well because I realised that if I swapped back to the terminal session, it shows debug info as it's working. With that, I managed to turn off the "demo" maps and note that the OSM map I downloaded was, in fact, working. After that, it was just a matter of having to zoom out and pan around, then back in to see my maps. The maps look good, though I'm inside (at work - ha!) and the GPS isn't getting a fix, so I don't know if the tracking part is functional. I did note that the font size was a wee bit small for my bifocal eyes. I'm hoping I can change that. Anyway, I'm just saying that it kinda works, that starting navit from the terminal provides useful debug info, and saying thanks for all the info everyone has posted. Oh, and thanks for the VI tips too. David... |

Re: Navit GPS (and libgarmin) for os2008
Basically hook into gpsmgr to check that the GPS chipset is switched on and if not, switch it on.
Take a look at the docs on the maemo.org site, this for example: http://maemo.org/api_refs/4.1/libgpsmgr-0.2/ and this for a simple example: https://garage.maemo.org/projects/gps-starter/ |
Re: Navit GPS (and libgarmin) for os2008
Does anyone know any new news about Navit? I got it working and think it's fantastically close to being awesome.
I've seen that the build generally available is from the beginning of the year, and there was an update in July posted to a webpage indicating that there is work going on to refactor and generally rework for the n8*0. I'd love to know how this is going, whether there is anything the community can do to help? there are a couple of things I'm interested in, namely a display layout more suited to the n810, eg larger display for speed/distance etc. And (in a dream world?) 3d view. Also I was curious as to the use of flite for reading out directions. I guess I understand that this is easy and flexible. But I have to say I prefer the quality you get from the TOMTOM approach of just providing a bunch of wav files of a real person saying the relatively limited number of commands needed. I'm really looking forward to the day I can truly use openstreetmap based gps navigation and I think navit is very good and very close. but I crave news, is it still being worked on? how is it going? could people help? I've had a go at setting up navit compilation in scratchbox but am yet to succeed. Anyone tried getting a bleeding edge version running? |
Re: Navit GPS (and libgarmin) for os2008
I like navit but it is soooo slow!!
|
Re: Navit GPS (and libgarmin) for os2008
I never got Navit to work, and I didn't see any progress on the updates. So, I gave up on it!

Re: Navit GPS (and libgarmin) for os2008
Welcome to itT, dwould!
I like navit, too. Version 0.1.0 was released 26 nov 2008. it's supposed to have a more finger-friendly GUI. http://sourceforge.net/forum/forum.php?forum_id=891703 and here's some advice for compiling: http://wiki.navit-project.org/index....t_on_n770/n800 (don't follow the "download the binaries" link there; it's old. i just put this link here for someone who has scratchbox and knows how to compile things because someone called "gerritv" gives some advice for it there.) as far as I know, it's just waiting to be compiled for maemo. |
Re: Navit GPS (and libgarmin) for os2008
does this new release give any more simple way to add new maps - instead of editing XML file?
first reason why me removed Navit after first attemp - necessity to edit XML file to add new maps I wanna just copy maps to some folder and then do NOT edit anymore... what about POIs, tracking and else? |
Re: Navit GPS (and libgarmin) for os2008
No there's no easier way to add maps, but that would be reasonably easy for someone to write.
I did compile a new version and added the Hildon patches from the old version (though that is probably old now). How many devs are interested in this? I've got a fair few things on atm but would be happy to help out. |

Re: Navit GPS (and libgarmin) for os2008
Hi, I heard my name :-)
I have just finished coding and testing auto start/stop of gpsd on Maemo for Navit. It should be in the Trunk sources in a few days. Also adding debian packaging rules so it is easier for others to contribute enhancements for the N8x0 series. I will do an AutoInstall file next. The other Maemo specific addition since Alfredi's version is Full Screen, Zoom in and Zoom out buttons work. This was done by 'gnunux' for an older version of Navit. Now that this part is done I can actually try using it :-) gerritv |

Do you plan to release some packages from svn (svn seems to be quite active and it would be nice to know what you Navit devs are planning)? Cheers, Simon |
Re: Navit GPS (and libgarmin) for os2008
I plan to build a package once the code is in the Trunk. The code from 'gnunux' was put in svn for the Navit 0.0.4 release. But it was built for an older SDK so wouldn't compile anymore.
I tried contacting the person who was doing the new UI for N800 but no answer. That code is not in any branches that I could find. gerrit |
Re: Navit GPS (and libgarmin) for os2008
I spent some time playing and just about managed to get something compiling and at least claiming it had done so with hildon stuff switched on. but I failed to figure out packaging (quite new to this) so I'm glad to hear that the debian packaging rules are being added to make life easier. I would really appreciate if someone could write down some reasonable instructions on obtaining latest svn, getting it build for n8*0 and packaging for install. That would make it really much easier to maybe contribute to the project.
As an aside I've started adding is_in tags to some of the places I go to in the uk to allow navits place search to find more places. It would make a really nice Christmas present if someone made a deb available for latest navit for n810.... |
Re: Navit GPS (and libgarmin) for os2008
keep an eye on tech.visser-scully.ca, it is my blog that I will try to add to as I go along with Navit and N800 stuff. also I will update the Navit wiki soon.

Re: Navit GPS (and libgarmin) for os2008
A Christmas present for some of you :-)
I added a Downloads page that includes: 1. Script to run configure.in for Navit on Maemo 2. Debian directory that simplifies building .deb packages from the Navit source tree. 3. a .deb file of Navit SVN 1843 (current trunk as of tonight) for you to try out. See http://tech.visser-scully.ca for more info. Gerritv |
Re: Navit GPS (and libgarmin) for os2008
The deb file works fine, thanks :)
I've modified the navit.xml because there was some "/usr/share/navit/maps/*.xml" not found, and also to add the map I've put, grabbed from downloads.cloudmade.com The buttons are only big if navit is loaded from root, is it normal ? |
Re: Navit GPS (and libgarmin) for os2008
Mnn, hadn't noticed the button size change. I'll try to figure that out. I am thinking of working on the Internal gui to Hildon-ize it. Presently the + - and full screen buttons work. It would be nice to free up more screen space for map, and maybe move a few things to OSD buttons.
if you run as root (using ssh?) then gpsbt won't work. It won't run if you are root. the xml warning is benign, there is a feature now that you can split the config file into pieces. See http://wiki.navit-project.org/index....nclude.2FXPath for some semi-cryptic (to me at least) information on this. |
Re: Navit GPS (and libgarmin) for os2008
thank you Gerritv!! new package installed nicely, I played with it a little and drove to visit family with it running.
after christmas I plan to try and get my enviroment set for compilation as there are a few things I'd life to figure out.. the osd info is way to small to read whilst driving, maybe I've missed the config for font size...will investigate with 'internal' mode there seems to be no way to exit the menu screens...odly this was fine whe running on my ubuntu system. search didn't seem to work at all, again that works ok on ubuntu build so will try to find out what's going on. I ran it for sa while with 'follow=1' which is what I'd like whilst driving, but it struglled to keep up, so I would likke to investigate performance options. maybe some things in map drawing can be ignored in favour of speed.. If I can figure out how, I would change the info display to show in BIG text the road I'm on, the road I turn onto next. the speedlimit on this road (if known) in addition to the osd info availiable, but as I said I'd like it all much bigger to see whilst driving. overall I'm happy that navit is being worked on, and i I can figure out how to help improve it I will. but for nows xmass is in the way. happy xmass everyone.. and thanks again gerritv |
Re: Navit GPS (and libgarmin) for os2008
it seems that font_size="nnn" where nnn is a number appropriate to you. does work for OSD items. but the osd boxes don't get bigger so you only see some of the now larger text.
this gives me hope that it's just a question of figuring out the config... |
Re: Navit GPS (and libgarmin) for os2008
oh..and I just tried todays svn build...all the icons are working again so i can get out of menu again yay!, Things are all looking better. search still isn't working for me but hopefully that's just a minor thing to fix. I'm looking forward to being able to get home and start tweaking things myself.
|
Re: Navit GPS (and libgarmin) for os2008
For me, search works partially on my N810: it does not find all the cities I ask.
I'm using OpenStreetMaps bin file. |
Re: Navit GPS (and libgarmin) for os2008
dwould, are you saying the icons are ok from SVN but not ok from the download on my blog site?
Gerritv |
Re: Navit GPS (and libgarmin) for os2008
gerritv- yes the icons did not work for me from your package. but they work from the svn builds here :http://download.navit-project.org/navit/n800/svn/
murphy, are you doing searches in the uk? i'm also using an osm file it works fine on ubuntu searching canterbury but not on the 810 |
Re: Navit GPS (and libgarmin) for os2008
Not the uk, I've loaded France.

Re: Navit GPS (and libgarmin) for os2008
Click To Install for the current SVN build of Navit is now available at http://tech.visser-scully.ca under the N8x0 downloads page.
the first time you use this a message from Application Manager comes up asking if ok to Navit SVN Builds to the Catalogue. Then Navit installs. One of the blog posts there also give a php code snippet in case your ISP (like mine) does not support mod-mime and custom mime-types. I added the snippet to WordPress Download Manager's download.php file. This is required for .install files, otherwise they serve with Content-Type=text/plain in place of application/x-install-instructions. |
Re: Navit GPS (and libgarmin) for os2008
Thanks, the repository works fine and I've updated my navit yesterday.
Is it possible on the n810 to have : - the map moving with the cursor/vehicle centered ? (with follow=1, only the cursor is moving and the map refresh only when the cursor is out of screen ; when on edge we don't see much map forward) EDIT : it's the refresh="1" option - a 3D view ? EDIT : you must use the "internal" gui And a happy new year :) |
Re: Navit GPS (and libgarmin) for os2008
finally got approval to start looking at navit properly. I've got things building but the deb pacakging step fails due to /debian/navit/usr/local/share/applications/hildon/navit.desktop not being there. the file does exist one level up in applications. I'll keep looking but any tips would be appreciated.

Re: Navit GPS (and libgarmin) for os2008
I've been playing with this for the last week or two. It keeps getting better with each svn release. Is there an updated libgarmin svn?
Any way to change the font size in the osd for next turn, eta, etc? Also for street names? |
