I know enough to reboot. :-) I have gone through cycles of uninstall, reboot, install, reboot, etc. I get the error on a new install, I reformat the storage heap (to different sizes from 4MB to 64MB) and get the standard apps. I try to launch one and I lock up. This happens everytime.

Re: Access Releases Garnet VM Beta 2

Special Note to Nokia :
My NIT IS a PDA! It just took a company with some motivation to provide a complete solution, instead of the half-baked ones we have grown to loath..um, er... love, that you have decided were "good enough"
Now I have a PIM that is U S E F U L, and an NIT that surfs the web quite efficiently! The browser in the ONE thing you guys got most right....but even that, based on an alpha codebase, has more work to be done on it.

If you can pull off full functionality like the Garnet VM is giving us in the N900, I'm ready to buy! Otherwise, dont waste our time with it.

I LOVE the new Garnet VM and report every error or problem I find directly to their site. I really want to see this thing get perfected!

Re: Access Releases Garnet VM Beta 2

If the GVM is so hot, why do you need Nokia to provide equivalent functionality? Seems like if they focus on the browser and hardware, and Access focuses on the GVM, the N900 would be at least as good a fit as if Nokia wastes time reimplementing a PIM that winds up being a clone of PalmOS stuff, and leaves the browser to stagnate?

Wrong! I love Garnet VM and what it does, but it is not a true substitute because it does not integrate with maemo. It is in its own environment and cannot be reached or reach maemo. Unfortunately, I think Nokia has taken its stance on a PIM Suite and this is the best we can do. It sucks that I have to open up Garnet to use the PIM. Well, thanks to Garnet for doing what Nokia wouldn't. Documents to go rocks as well!

Just a couple of points that seem to stand out :
  1. It would be excellent if there was an option to jump straight to the palm home screen rather than via one of the apps.
  2. In the Garnet VM Launcher would it not be simpler if you could double click on the icons to launch rather than having to select the icon then select launch.

Both items are really small beer in the long run but I feel would add considerably to the user experience.

Mark

You can jump directly to the home screen and bypass the launcher by using the command (in xterm or personal menu)
~ $ /usr/bin/gvm/gvm -a lnch -n ************ -z 1.5 -B /usr/bin/gvm/gvm_bg.jpg

what this does is:
-a lnch -- launches you to the home screen directly
-n ************ -- stores your chosen number as the palm ID (used for software that requires DRM/other identification to work)
-z 1.5 -- zooms the screen in portrait mode to look like a palm
-B /usr/bin/gvm/gvm_bg.jpg -- uses the jpg file as the background the way Garnet does

Re: Access Releases Garnet VM Beta 2

well this is fun, using kpilot i now have korganizer and gvm synced :P

still, the gvm is only beta, and supposedly time limited, so...

Benson 2008-06-02 23:16

Re: Access Releases Garnet VM Beta 2

Well, I was going to point that out, but you beat me to it... since you can link any app in the menu, it's not like having to "open Garnet to use the PIM" is a separate operation. Now some stuff (alarms) still isn't where it ought to be; that does need to be out of emulation so it can run all the time; but I think Access is likely to work on improving things.

The main point of this is for their complete gvm-on-Linux platform, but the response they get with these betas should be a flag that they can make this a commercial app if they get the maemo integration down.

If Nokia wants to provide a PIM, GREAT! But the waste of clock cycles they are trying to pass off is laughable. I agree that the Garnet VM is not a perfect solution, but compared to the junk Nokia has been putting out for 3 years in the way of PIM functions, it is better that sliced bread with cherry jam!
Rather that re-rant, this thread has my feelings on the subject of Nokias software skills. http://www.internettablettalk.com/fo...d=1#post185998
Please keep in mind, I don't fault the developers. They do the job layed out for them by their bosses. Somewhere above the devs is an exec, or a group of them saying "Yeah, the PIM sucks, but we didnt build a PIM. If the users want a PIM, let them go buy a Palm!"

So I saw this video: http://www.styletap.com/product_apple.php of Styletap running on an iPhone, so for curiosity's sake, I downloaded the same benchmark and ran it on my n800 with beta 2, and scored 551%. The iPhone running Styletap, on the other hand, scored 423%.

I'm sure a great deal of that is because the actual creators of Garnet (well, they bought the company who wrote it at least) wrote the GVM, and Styletap is an unrelated third party, but still, I thought it was interesting.

Re: Access Releases Garnet VM Beta 2

Yes, it seems to me that I've seen bs about how the tablet wasn't designed to be a pim about a hundred times here. It would be nice if the Palm emulation causes that attitude to vanish.

Benson 2008-06-03 02:48

Re: Access Releases Garnet VM Beta 2

It's not BS; Nokia's plan does not include functioning as a PIM. Nokia couldn't care less whether someone else (such as Access) does it, but it's not on their plan. They intended it for other purposes, and put the resources they had towards those; that defense of why Nokia didn't write a decent PIM will stay as valid as it always has been.

But we probably won't have to say it as often, anyway, since people will be complaining about it less.

Anyone else have a sound problem? I have installed games where the sound/music works but this is only when I do it when Garnet VM is in a clean state with nothing initially installed in RAM. If I exit out of this Garnet session and then rerun Garnet, the sound/music is gone. Rebooting the tablet sometimes helps but most of the time doesn't. I always get sound back by reformating the storage and doing a reinstall of the game. The sound then works, but then of course if I exit out of Garnet and and then run Garnet again the sound is gone. I have uninstalled ane reinstalled Garnet and that doesn't help. Any suggestions? And does anyone else have this type of problem?

No. N810, N800, 770 all run fine with some simple game like Classics. 770 chokes a little bit on sound upon switching different games but re start the game always fix it.

Yes, I have similar problem. Sound works fine, then something happens and sound no longer works until device reboot. Closing/starting GVM does not help and even some other programs using audio (scummvm) are silent too until reboot. Some others do work though (internet radio applet) I can often reproduce it when just launching anything, then go to general palmos preferences and disable system sound (to prevent click on tap sounds). When doing this device squeaks an hisses and then audio stops completely.

For me reboot cures it always, no need to reinstall/reformat or anything like that.

Happens both with N800/OS2007 and N810/OS2008. It happened also with previous garnetvm version.

Thanks for confirming the problem. I found for me that certain games are causing the problem. There's no problem with Mazera or Robo. But Arvale is another story. If I run Arvale and exit the game by hitting the Esc key on the tablet, there is no problem with the sound. But if I exit Arvale by tapping Quit on the menu, then that's when the sound problem happens. I exit out of Garnet and then rerun Garnet and no sound in any game.

Thanks for mentioning the rebooting fix. I tested that again and found that rebooting the tablet with it plugged in doesn't fix the sound problem. My tablet has to be unplugged and rebooted for the sound problem to go away. So rebooting this way does fix it fine. At least for now it's nice to know there is a way to fix it.

You may already know this, but when a tablet is plugged in, shutting down, powering up, and rebooting all just change runlevels. The Internet Tablet OS keeps running in there behind the "Charging" screen, so if some underlying bit of the OS has gone wonky, shutting down with external power connected won't make the wonky go away.

Which, since the GVM should be shut down in the process, is probably the nature of the problem...

You don't need a hotsync name. All you have to do is enable network hotsync on you pc side (I am using windows xp) and input the ip address of your pc in garnet vm (I am using a router so 192.168.1.102 is mine... you can find yours by looking at your TCP/IP settings).

The "chosen number" i was referring to was your palm ID number. Garnet automatically gives you one, but if you are starting via shortcut you need to manually choose one. I just looked at the one garnet vm gave me, and chose that. Mine was 12 digits/letters I believe.

is is either dsp pcm task or alsa to dsp userspace stuff. What helps is running
Code:

kill `pidof dsp_dld`
as root. DSP gets restarted and audio in GVM works again.

EDIT:
I have reported it as http://bugs.maemo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=3219

Hi Pushwall, on my n810 the VM crashes everytime it will produce a sound.

Thanks for your post about DSP. For some reason the kill command you show doesn't seem to work for me. What I found does work is this command:
dsp_dld --enable-restart

So I set up that command to run as root using Personal Menu. I use it whenever something in Garnet VM whacks the sound and this seems to get the sound running fine again.

Maybe you used wrong quotes? For such command output substitution to work you really need backqotes ``. Or there is alternative syntax for same thing:
Code:

kill $(pidof dsp_dld)
Or maybe in your case dsp_dld is not running at all so there is nothing to kill? Does
Code:

pidof dsp_dld
print some number?

I tried it again making sure I used backquotes, but it comes back:
sh: bad pid ' `pidof'
sh: bad pid ' `dsp_dld`'

So I tried: kill $(pidof dsp_dld). That command ran with no output. I tested it with GVM by whacking the sound system, exiting out of GVM, running the kill command, and then running GVM and trying to rerun the program that whacked the sound. GVM hangs and I finally have to exit out when I get the box that says GVM is not responding. I've tried this several times and it's the same every time.

Maybe quoting is still not right but it doesn't matter, your way is better. In fact one can just run dsp_dld with no parameter and it restarts the copy that is already running.

GVM hangs like this from time to time for me too even if I don't mess with dsp_dld. Again full device reboot helps.

Re: Access Releases Garnet VM Beta 2

I'm having an install problem with Garnet 2.
My N810 is running: OS2008
Version: 1.2007.42-19

When I try to install Garnet 2 I get this error:
"Unable to install Garnet-VM. Some application packages required for the installation are missing"

When I search further, they are:
Hildon-fm1(>=1.14)
Hildon-libs0(>=0.14.11.1)
Libdbus-1-2(>=.61)

Am I having a software version problem?

Thank you.

Hawkeye Mole: I have the same problem (with an N810 running OS2008). I've tried to report it to Access, but there's no bug reporter on the Garnet VM page. I've tried to get the bug across via their "Feedback" page, but I'm not sure how effective that'll be.

I really miss being able to read DRM'd e-books by running Mobipocket with the Garnet VM.

Anyone know what we could do to solve the missing packages problem? I've tried using the application manager to search for installable applications, and never found something resembling the libs I'm "missing."
