Definite interest here.... I'd take one! Any idea on cost yet?

thanks

Oberon85

I should be able to nail down the cost of the adapter soon. The door now is the only thing that is left and the manufacturer of the cover is trying to get more money now.

It will be posted soon.

Thanks

Re: 32GB SD adapter For N810

How can I NOT be interested in (comparatively) massive storage for my N810?
This sounds pretty darn cool as long as it isn't cumbersome.

Count me in as well.

Thanks for your efforts.

Re: 32GB SD adapter For N810

agreed. i carry around a 160gb USB OTG harddrive and a battery powered USB hub to be able to access it (it needs that extra 500 mA) so that I can take my movies and everything with me. hooking it all up on the bus is a bit of a pain. having 32 gigs on board would be pretty spectacular.

Re: 32GB SD adapter For N810

or just buy a 32 gb (hopefully soon 64 gb) usb-pen. No need for extra power or anything...

Re: 32GB SD adapter For N810

No, a (relatively) big usb-pen is not a very good solution, even if you get a good solid cable that doesn't need any fiddly "lesbie" adapters. A slim-profile SD adapter is the way to go. Looking forward to seeing how this project turns out.

As reputable 16GB flash drives have appeared and have started to slowly drop in price it's something I considered.

After setting up a test with a 4GB flash drive on my tablet it works fine but seems like a kludge, which is to say it's cumbersome for such a portable device.
I have the short Motorola micro-mini USB adapter and the one-piece mini-A female adapter and the result is still just sort of eight inches long with a Sandisk Cruzer micro stuck in the end of it!
I have my share of worries about the mechanical stresses hanging a lot of stuff on the micro USB port connector will incur over time in a portable environment as well, but that's me.

Craves1, count me in! I've been keeping my N800 around as a PMP because of it's two slots (and because I love superfluous gadgetry).

I am very interested to see how this plays out!

Re: 32GB SD adapter For N810

:cool:Think you could put a micro projector in there too?

Seriously, This would definitely make me think about upgrading from my N800... The lack of a full size SD slot was the biggest reason I didn't get an N810.

I am really looking forward to seeing the finished product.:D

Craves1, are you planning 1 or 2 sd slots?

craves1 2008-09-13 04:51

Re: 32GB SD adapter For N810

Just one slot for now. I am not sure if the Tablet would support more than one slot. I already spoke to my engineer to see if it is hardware possible even if the Tablet does not support it yet in software.

I am not a linux software person but if there are great interest I can make the hardware for many devices for the N810. Then maybe others will write the software for them to control the tablet in many ways.

The interface for other devices will be made in the near future.
A IR receives and Transmitter and a tilt sensor are just a few products comming for the tablet.

I will keep you updated.

For those who are interested I received the first set of production parts and all works fine. I am now waiting for the replacement door samples. I then have to decide what colors to offer the cover in and everything will be completed.

I am testing it now with th 16GB class 6 SD card. SO far it is much better and faster then with the 8GB Mini SD class 4.

When saving programs in Xournal the folder on the card where I store all my notes comes up more than 3 times faster.

Thanks All

I imagine offering the cover in a single color will be most cost effective. My vote would be to replicate the original color as closely as possible.

BTW, I proposed an idea like this back in March 08, just after I got my tablet. This is what I wrote:

"I had thought about a ribon cable, like you see on printer carriages (sp?) but from the MiniSD card slot. Using a MiniSD adapter, pulled apart, and the ribon cable soldered on and then terminating to a standard SD card reader, somehow fixed on the back (the guts are relatively slim). This was also to allow the stand to work but enable a standard SD card to be used."

My thought was to put the SD slot on the outside but your implementation is much better. I look forward to the finished result.

Re: 32GB SD adapter For N810

Different colors does not add anything to the cost of production. One of the colors would be close to the original color. I am also leaning towards a shiny black color. I will receive color samples next week.

Thanks

Craves1 is it possible to add another sdhc card slot to n800? Also could you add IR and tilt to n800? I'm just waiting for n900. Would it be possible to add sim card? I use pay as you go sim card where ever I travel. I don't care about cost. Send me pm. Thanks

Re: 32GB SD adapter For N810

I absolutely would pay for an "internal SD slot". I'd been trying to figure out ways to create one myself off of the external USB port (ha!), and this sounds like it would be much much nicer.

Throw in a tilt sensor and I will worship you forever. :D

There are only two SD/MMC interfaces inside N8x0 and both are used. For N810, one is used for builtin 2GB storage. Easiest way to add third slot is perhaps only via some tiny usb card reader (which is pretty cumbersome solution).

The 2 slot in the N800 I think is enough due to the fact that the battery life would be decreased if anything else is added.
I can add a tilt sensor and IR to the N800 as well but I do not think enough people would want it for this tablet to make it cost effective. I would have to make another cover for the back of the N800 also and this would be expensive. I was however considering it before I received the N810 because I wanted to add a keyboard and Flash memory to the N800.

I also wanted the back cover of the N800 to be metal so I could use the magnetic cover without adding the metal pieces to the back.
If I thought enough people wanted it I could make an adapter to add Flash memory, Tilt sensor, and IR to the n800.

Most of All I think the N800 would make great a infrared remote like the ones that sell for $1500 but I would need the community to make the software interface to it.

I will be making some prototypes for this in the near future and if everything works the way I think it will, I will then wait for a response from the community with the software ideas and if they would want it.

Thanks all

The tilt sensor is possible but I do not think enough people would want it. Also it does not have anything to do with the SD card adapter, This could be added later.

Thanks

Sim cards are not possible due to FCC and many other factors. I wish but I did look at some of the 3G USB cards with this Idea and decided that my cell was enough given the cost of doing this

Thanks

3 Attachment(s)
For anyone still wondering what the tablet would look like with the memory adapter installed, this is the cover from the MUGEN extended battery with the adapter installed.
Attachment 2443
As you can see there are no wires shown on the outside of the tablet. The final cover will be thinner than this. I am using this cover to test until I have my cover. This Tablet have the first run prototype boards installed in it, with a 16GB SD card installed. I am using this for testing this week and so far no issues at all.

I am making a version for people with the extended battery. The inside supports would have to be removed but this is simple

Re: 32GB SD adapter For N810

Nice work. It looks great!

Your N810 conversion is close to what I'm looking for except for the 2gb internal card. I really need two full size sdhc cards. Is that possible? I carry enormous amounts of audio/video for work. A third card would even be better. The extended battery would take of extra juice for the extra sdhc slot or modifying the internal card or both(I always carry an extra battery or two when I travel). :)
Can anything be done about the terrible camera? The community is starting to make some really interesting software to remotely control the camera.
If you add IR and tilt the community will make the software trust me. These guys live and breathe this stuff. Can you imagine Nxx acting like full remotes for all home/auto electronics. The Irreco guys would go crazy same for MythTV group. Tilt brings in whole new possiblities(look at what the fruit guys are doing). They would probably jump ship. Rob did good business with these guys with his USB OTG conversion. Which brings me to a tv/hdmi port? Is that possible?

As far as phone, I had been toying with finding a very thin phone and attaching to back with custom housing so I would have a phone on one side and N800 on other. I have a very slim motorola that is would easily fit where N800 removable back plate sits and it would make the N800 evenly thick across the back because of the hump in the back. Not the greatest idea but it would combine the two. Your 3g USB is a better idea. What would that cost to do?
I'm sold I just want to know my options. Even if the N900 comes with 2 full sdhc slots, better camera, etc... I will still have you modify it. Nokia will never add the stuff we modders want and need. keep up the good work.

Re: 32GB SD adapter For N810

First off, great works looks awesome can't wait to see the final result! I know a lot of the 810 people are very unhappy with the current memory card situation so this a neat solution that solves it quite easily.

Watch out there Dan, you and your wild dreams! ;o) I'm not going to get into details (and thus hijack the original thread here), but some of Dan's points:
2nd fullsize card = doubt it, from my understanding the internal flash chip is soldered to the circuit and while there have been some "joking" discussions of how one might go about changing it out, it's definately not something that you'd ever be able to do without a rediculously stead hand and expert soldering skills (and even then...).
3rd card? = Even less likely than the previous point due to hardware restrictions. More controller pins/etc would have be on the chips... so USB or BT is really the only place to go beyond what's natively there.
Camera will change in the next version of the tablet (one hopes), but again changing it out right now would require the soldering skills again, along with another camera that's hardware compatible and physically similiarly sized... along with software, etc for it.
IR and Tilt = Don't have a nice solution for the N810 (damn that micro USB slot), but my solution for the N800 literally just walked in the door... so keep an eye out for an announce soon!
TV = there was some experimentation with USB to VGA/tv out, but the hardware just doesn't seem ready; a lot of people have been talking about this as a feature of the next tablet...

lol well, I guess that's one way to get a phone on the tablet! Reminds me of the old "camera phone" joke about duck taping a camera to the back of your cell... might make repacing batteries a bit of a pain though ;-)

Thanks,
-Rob

Re: 32GB SD adapter For N810

To add 3G capabilities (but not necessarily voice!), an ExpressCard is the obvious way to go. Typically a USB interface (which we've got) and constrained to a fairly convenient form factor.

Some models do support voice, but I'm not sure how well they'd work out.

Re: 32GB SD adapter For N810

Rob great to have you back.
Did you ever look at the Easy Debian work? The apps that can now be used on N800 is staggering. Can't wait for QT to start adding to the mix.
Back to discussion at hand. :)
I'm just throwing ideas out to you engineering wunderkind. The new high speed sdhc cards have made it possible with dual booting to have multiple apps running at same time. If we have more hardware choices the guys here will find unique ways of using it. Your OTG adapter really opened up the Nxx platform to mouses and keyboard and later Nokia adapted it into the software.
Looking forward to your IR and Tilt especially since I now have rotation on my N800. My GPS will also benefit from that.
I wonder, can the extra battery be put in the N800?
Craves1 can you do that? I'm sure a lot of N800 owners would jump at that.
At the end of the day hardware modders like the two of you will make quite a bit offering add-ons that Nokia will most likely not do on their own at first due mainly to market forces.

Craves1, Couple of questions..
1. If I buy the adapter with your battery cover, is it possible to later on get the Mugen battery and move the guts from your battery cover to theirs? Or should I just buy the Mugen battery now and order the guts separately?

2. Will both the one that works with the Mugen be available at the same time as the one with your battery cover?

3. What are the odds that I might be able to obtain one (either of them) before the end of October? Going to be traveling abroad and your SD adapter is perfect for long plane/train/car rides to have plenty of media handy.

Thanks

1 Yes you can use the Mugen battery cover with the adapter that was not designed for that cover. If you want to buy the Mugen cover to be safe that is up to you. The Mugen battery will not fit in my cover. There will be a big Holiday the First of October where the cover is being manufactured.

2. They will be available at the same time. It should be sometime before the end of September or first of October.

3. The odds are good you should be able to take it on your trip. You shoud be able to get on before the end of September or first of October providing the cover is correct.

Thanks

The final parts arrived today and they work perfectly. The only thing is the cover was not finished before the manufacturer went on a 10 day national holiday. Other than that the unit is ready to go.
Many have asked to see it installed, well here it is.

Attachment 2525
This is the N810 with one version of the adapter installed with the MUGEN extended battery. There will be at least 4 versions made. All the parts including the Screw and cable are custom made parts. The PCB are gold plated and RoHs compliant.
Attachment 2526
The Version without the cover for people with the extended battery will go on sell next week. The unit with the custom cover will be ready shortly after that. I am also waiting on the screws to be delivered. The screw is necessary.

I also made a hackers version for the N770 in limited quantity for expermenting with the 770.
Attachment 2527
Attachment 2528
The 770 can use any class 4 or under Flash card but they are very slow since they only use one data line.

Also the new 16GB microSD cards are class 2 even if the sellers say they are class 4. Just a bit of information I came accross the hard way. My 8G 770 memory chip can use these if any one is interested but you are better off buying a N800 at the price of the memory chip plus the mod.

That's a great mechanical design. Very well thought out. Almost like it was designed that way in the first place.

Benson 2008-10-02 03:14

Re: 32GB SD adapter For N810

Hmmm... Not to be a back-seat designer, but did you consider using a push-in/push-out SD socket? I'm not real sure on the mechanical dimensions, but it looks like you might have had just enough room for one, with a slot in the casing, to allow changing cards without removing the battery cover.

I'm still not sure that would be a good choice for other reasons, though; maybe too easy to pop a mounted card out.

Re: 32GB SD adapter For N810

Nice!

Quick Question: How does the cable fit under the stand? Is there really enough room? Did you cut some off? Because opening the slot and even not removing the card, it says "blah blah blah." Its really nice though!

Does the single screw replace the one that's there or go over it? The screw that's there is a tiny torx I think.

I am not sure what you are asking but the tablet was not changed in any way and the stand works just as before. The cable was custom made to fit exactly without any modification to the Tablet.

Thanks
