If you noticed, the partition card says, you have chosen to format . First partition is size . (suspiciously void of actual values).

Thought it was just something I did. PB, consider this a bug report when you return. :)

1) load PB once, then exit. It needs to scan for available partitions, This is done as PB loads, This might be skipped by PB easy? Not 100% sure, but think I had the same problem.

2) Open cover to the SD card but leave it seated. It keeps the partitions from being mounted, but doesn't stop fuctions like partitioning (that require the card to be unmounted). Just be extra carefull not to move / remove the SD card while partition is in progress.

PS, confirm which step worked if either for PB's troubleshooting.

Sorry, it was me being really dumb. I was selecting the card with the spacebar.

Don't we have plenty of RAM as long as we don't fill the memory completely? I suppose the partition would just be insurance.

Yes, you are missing something. Booting from a 2G card doesn't give you more ram, it gives you more room to install things. Ram is 128M in all N8x0m it doesn't matter where you boot from. The only way to increase that is enabling virtual memory or swap (better AFAIK). To see your ram (and swap) usage open the console and run "free" (without the "")

I seem to be having swap issues.

My Linux swap partition (mmcblk0p2) is scanned and recognized by GPARTED, but when I attempt to enable it for swapping using console tools, mmcblk0p3 (my ext3 partition) appears in the swap target menu with what appears to be the stats for my the ext 3 partition.

Re: Introducing console-tools v1 (install-tools replacemement)

I just wanted to say that I used console-tools today to clone my N810's OS to the internal card, and it was smooth and trouble-free. The only hard part was deciding, after many puzzling unsuccessful attempts to use install-tools on my system (43-7), to go online to see if I was missing something. After seeing some of the posts here I'm glad that I didn't try two weeks ago, after getting my new SD card.

Oh - I reactivated virtual memory (to the fat16 partition on the indternal disk), and free is showing it as swap.

Many thanks to pb for this wonderful tool (and its predecessor, of course).

hallo,
i used a 512 Mb Sdcard. Theese are parrtitions:
Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
/dev/mmcblk0p1 1 960 30712 6 FAT16
/dev/mmcblk0p2 961 13216 392160 83 Linux
/dev/mmcblk0p3 13217 15264 65504 82 Linux swap

all is running OK.
Great and excellent work. Thanks.

Re: Introducing console-tools v1 (install-tools replacemement)

Hi there - just got a wimax for Christmas and decided to give this a try. Everything checks out OK until I get to the final reboot where I should get to start up from the internal memory card.

I see the bootmenu OK but the control pad is disabled and then after 10 seconds or so I get the following error message
"WiMax:
Self test RF#2 failed, try to reboot the device.
If the problem persists, perform software update
or contact service."

I successfully reflash the device and start over. I can even install the boot-menu and then restart directly to the internal but I get the error when I add the memory card partition to the bootmenu.

Also, separate question - I've read that using a memory card as swap can shorten the life of the card. Since the wimax has an embedded card what is the best way to handle the partitioning and swap for the wimax? should I only be doing this on the external card?

thanks

Re: Introducing console-tools v1 (install-tools replacemement)

Follow up...
I *think* that I have managed to get everything installed correctly but I installed bootmenu with the external card removed from the device so I don't actually get a boot menu at startup (even if I set the default startup to the cloned partition on the external card after re-inserting it.

Problem is, the only way to get the boot-menu to show up is to do the install step again and that always brings up the error message.

Don't know if that info helps but I'm out of ideas and ready to give up on booting onto the external card and turn this thin into a really expensive GPS!

G'night

Tom

Re: Introducing console-tools v1 (install-tools replacemement)

Hi;

PB, just wanted to thank your for this excellent piece of software.

I had been running 4.2008.36-5 on my N810, and recently grew tired of the "!" telling me there was an update. I got on these forums, saw that you were no longer supporting the old stuff, downloaded the latest console-tools V1, did backups, booted into flash, and did the upgrade to 5.2008.43-7.

That went ok, I then installed your CTV1 via App Manager.

I first tried the pbeasy bootmenu, and it installed and scanned parts, but when it rebooted and I tried to select my external SD part, I could tell there was a problem - it called it by an odd name and would not boot from it. (sorry I did not write that down). I then ran pb, and had it download Fanoush's latest. Installed bootmenu again, now all I OK, can boot from flash or external SD.

I'll be making a PayPal donation right after I post this!

Keep up the good work,

Steve

Hello PB,

Just thought I would confirm that the above error probably exists for all WiMax editions, as I have tried to install bootmenu 7 times and gotten the same error each time and ended up reflashing my tablet back to the factory OS version just to get back the use of my tablet. Now I have looked at the bootmenu garage page and looked at the files there. What I have noted is that there are specific files for the R-34 and R-44 series of OS2007 & OS2008, but none for the R-48 (WiMax) series of OS2008. Is there any way you and STSKEEPS/ Fanoush can correct this oversight, as I do not know Linux OS well enough to compile, fix, etc.... this problem? Please consider this a request in regards to us w/ the WiMax version, Otherwise, I fear we will never be able to Clone OUR OS to the SD card (or should I say, cloning is successful, but booting to it is impossible) until this is resolved.....

I would be more than willing to be a Alpha/Beta tester for this in order to help facilitate your efforts in this regard....

PS. Hope you had a wonderful vacation......

I merely automate Fanoush's scripts, if Fanoush supports it console-tools would support it. Send him a pm and see what he says, perhaps you can be his tester?

The issue (if Fanoush can get bootmenu working with the WIMAX, is that the error occurs with ct on the initial install of bootmenu and there is no opportunity to do the "upgrade" step AFAIK...

Just an FYI - I've agreed to test it if he works on it but there might be additional steps to get it working with ct.

Re: Introducing console-tools v1 (install-tools replacemement)

Hello, I am newbie for linux. I cannot enable swap partition though UI. I follow your advice to set the a 256MB swap partition to externel sd (booting from internal), I use swap menu to enable it. Command "free" displays swap partitions doesn't work even after reboot.

another confusion:

In my n810, "cat /proc/partitions" displays : mmcblk0 is my external sd and mmcblk1 is internal sd. but "df" is correct.
Code:

~ $ cat /proc/partitions
major minor  #blocks  name

  31    0        128 mtdblock0

As mentioned in the other thread tomstratton created for this, I have hopefully fixed keyboard handling for RX-48. However it sounds completely unrelated to the wimax error so if it doesn't help my only idea is that the 'remove unneeded extra and factory testing stuff' initfs_flasher step removes something needed for wimax device. What is your default in console-tools for this step, yes or no? No is safer and yes no longer makes much difference since Diablo release enlarged initfs partiton.

PB - I thing that Fanoush HAS fixed the bootmenu to work with the WIMAX (maybe not...) but it doesn't seem to like booting to the external card. I get an error
"Boot from mmc13 failed... rebooting from flash"
After using pb to clone and copy all data FROM mtdblock4 TO mmcblk1p3 (after partitioning)

See my full post here...

I'm going to reread this entire thread to see if I find any answers here.

What is your default in console-tools for this step, yes or no? No is safer and yes no longer makes much difference since Diablo release enlarged initfs partiton.

It defaults to yes, because it was always needed.

Has anyone confirmed a manual initfs_flasher install for RX-48 is working?

I can alter it, but I prefer to do it after its confirmed working

Success! I am going to re-do the whole procedure once or twice and keep notes - I will post the entire results including step-by-step on the other thread...

Does it work if you reboot?

Perhaps my mkswap is hosed?

The swap seem to disappeared after reboot. I thought that was weird since I did enable swap from the pb menu and every time I checked it, it wasn't there. It seem that it has to be reset every time the device is rebooted.

do you have the file /etc/init.d/local.sh ?

This should start the swap partition on boot.

as root try running

/etc/init.d/local.sh start

Does this start it?

Re: Introducing console-tools v1 (install-tools replacemement)

Hi,
I got a N810, and trying to clone the system to the internal card(2G).
After partitioning, i got a err in the clone stage:
mount: mounting /dev/mmcblk0p2 on /TRG failed.

And the "fdisk -l" shows that the partitioning was successful.
/dev/mmcblk0p1 can be mounted successfully, while mmcblk0p2 and mmcblk0p3 can't be mounted.
"dmsg" shows nothing valuable related with this err.

So can anyone help me out? thx.

What happens if you retry the operation?

Do you have virtual memory disabled?

I did it several times, and got the same result.
the vm has been disabled.

Did what several times? Are you using pbeasy, or pb. Please walk me through exactly what you are doing.

Re: Introducing console-tools v1 (install-tools replacemement)

at first, i use the pbeasy, and the problem appeared. I tried about 3 times, finding that the problem was repeatable.
Then I use the "sfdisk/cfdisk/fdisk & mkfs" to finish the partition manually, and do the "mount" operation manually, the same problem appeared again and again.

You must use pbeasy to partition your device and reboot, if you want to use pbeasy to clone,
Then you run the Clone process and I need specifically what is happening, you are getting a mount error while clone process is running?

Its very hard to troubleshoot without specifics?

At first, I use pbeasy to partition, and reboot. When excuting the clone process in the pbeasy, I got an error: "mount /dev/mmcblk0p2 /TRG failed command shows below: mount /dev/mmcblk0p2 /TRG".

Then I tried to do the partition manually, and got the same error. I've checked the dmesg, and there was no logs related with the failed mounting. In another word, the only error message I got is "mount /dev/mmcblk0p2 /TRG failed".

Yesterday I tried the pb, and the same error occured.

I'd like to use the "mount" from the bash3 tonight, trying to get more useful specifics from the kernel log.

thanks for replay

Problem solved after i did a mkfs before excuting the "Partition" of the pbeasy.
Thank you for providing such a convenient tool.

This is so awesome. I just want to say the easiest way to navigate Pb's menus in xterm is to remotely connect using PUTTY (after installing open ssh on your nokia). You can click through the menus using your mouse! Don't know if this was mentioned yet.

You can click through the N8*0 on screen too.

Re: Introducing console-tools v1 (install-tools replacemement)

I have just partitioned an 8 gig card with 500mb Fat 256 swap and 7000mb (ish) main memory. I then cloned my internal flash to this card and all seems well.

Do I need to turn on swap memory in any way or will it just see it and use it?

Steve
