Hi

I'm confused on how you would get this to work with Linux.

I thought you could just use gmediaserver on Linux with the 770. But it looks like you need to run a media server and renderer/ player before it can be used with the 770? So gmediaserver and gmediarender? Is that right?

Cheers
Rich

Okay, GMediaServer can be used by Media Streamer on the 770 without anything extra. GMediaRender implements the server component that provides UPnP controllers [like Cidero] a means to render media content (audio, video and images) from a UPnP media server [such as GMediaServer]. So, using Cidero with GMediaRender provides the same solution as the 770 Media Streamer on a Linux PC.

All you need is GMediaServer [or other UPnP server software/hardware] to work with the 770 Media Streamer.

The Nokia 770 Media streamer is a UPnP Player and/or a Controller.

As a player on the Nokia 770 you can use it to play music served by a UPnP Server. (So in this case just something like gmediaserver running on a Linux box)

As a controller on the Nokia 770 you can use it to play Music, Videos and Pictures on a hardware Media Player that supports AV for example the Philips SL300i (So in this case both gmediaserver & gmediarender are being considered and Media streamer will sit in the middle and control events)

Good News, TVersity released a new Version yesterday V0.9.8.1 which works with Media Streamer. www.tversity.com

Media Streamer team have also now made sure that Media streamer is available form Maemo.org as some of us found it difficult to access latest version via the Nokia 770 Application Manager and the package update methods.

Current version can be found at https://garage.maemo.org/projects/mediastreamer/

Please note: Currently Media Streamer V1.0-8.2 only supports audio playback on the Nokia 770, but you can also use Media streamer as a controller to control a UPnP Player such as the Philips SL300i (Where you then have the Audio, Video and Picture playback control capabilities from Media streamer ;) )

apparently microsoft has released their own uPNP server software called Windows Media Connect 2.0 seems to do the job as well. I've had little success with the Philips Media server for OSX but eyeConnect seems to work well.

Now all we need is to have nokia finish up the program to stream video and pictures as well :)

I am available for testing ANY betas of Media Streamer released to Maemo.org, I am well impressed with the capabilities of mediastreamer_1.0-8.2.

FYI: MythTV just added UPnP server capability for TV and Music streaming in their latest release.

http://www.mythtv.org/wiki/index.php...e_Notes_-_0.20

I haven't tried it yet. Just thought I would pass on the pointer to those interested.

Thanks MikeL

:) Many Thanks to MikeL for working with the guys at TVersity to get their free server software working for us Media Streamers. It will be great once Media Streamer works for video.

Now I just have to work on his Hamachi notes to make my secured system work worldwide.

Thanks again MikeL

I've got TwonkyVision working on my Apple iBook. It's actually streaming my iTunes library from an external hard drive, no problems there.

But I'm only seeing mp3 file types in my list. Much of my music is in m4a format.

I've been trying to research these and the TwonkyVision forums, and it looks like TwonkyVision does support m4a. Has anyone else had problems with Media Streamer not recognizing m4a?

I would imagine that Media Streamer like many UPnP players does not support aac or m4a audio, also formats with DRM are generally not supported by many typical UPnP players. (i.e. Media Streamer only supports mp3 and ogg perhaps?)

www.tversity.com should allow you to transcode m4a on the fly as mp3 for the Media Streamer, but I have to be honest and say I have not tested this. (I think work may be required on a TVersity profile for Media Streamer to advise on format)

Here is the specific TVersity FAQ relating to supported formats when the correct Directshow decoder is installed http://s3.amazonaws.com/www.tversity...tml#faq-N100C1

I just wanted to add that while the setting up of the TVersity Server is not exactly the most intuitive software I have ever used, once it is setup and you get your n770 setup with it, this is a very nice, smooth addition to your 770. Now, when we get the other MEDIA types streaming, VIDEO etc, we will really have a nice slick feature. I encourage all to try this out, it works great.
NOTE: make sure you get the router to Forward the Port. Firewalls and Routers will be the source of trouble for most. The instructions cover it well, just take your time and read. I must stress, this is not the "Real men Don't Need manuals" software install. LOL

New version mediastreamer_1.1-2 available with support for images https://garage.maemo.org/frs/?group_id=74

Note that if you read the Media Streamer open-discussion thread, info is effectively available on supported formats at this release i.e. :-
  • Audio formats: mp3, aac, wma, wav
  • Picture Formats: jpeg, png

mrp 2006-09-22 19:50

support for images ready. Now it is time for video!
Can't wait for the first beta releases of media streamer
with video working together with Tversity

I am now having success streaming all my photos from the PC to the Nokia 770 (TVersity to Media Streamer). I have posted a number of Nokia Screen grabs in to illustrate this capability with a very basic how-to use In My Blog :)

It all works extremely well, image streaming from my PC to the Nokia 770 is very quick, where it seems that no matter what image I try to load TVersity quite happily provides the image at a scale that the Nokia 770 is happy to accept. (I think but am not sure that the Media Streamer profile I have manually added to TVersities profiles.xml is making a difference even though I have not adjusted any media transcoding values)

I am looking forward to the release of Media Streamer which will support Video streaming, Visa Smolander is currently suggesting there will be support for the following in the Media Streamer Open-Discussion :-

MPEG-4 Simple Profile Level 2
Max. QVGA 320x240
mp4 file must have mp42 major brand (or 3gp5)
Bitrate 384kbs

Album art, Media Connect

I'm using Media Connect 2.0. How can I display album art in Media Streamer?

As far as I can tell, Media Streamer's, Album Art feature currently only works with PMM and Simple Center Media Servers and then only with a specifically named image "folder.jpg" in the album folder of the tracks being served/played.

I have been tidying/updating both my album folders and my individual mp3's ID3Tagging with embedded Album Art, but do not think that Media Streamer reads the mp3 embedded jpg?

I use ID3-tagIT, MusicBrainz Classic Tagger to ensure ID3V1/2 Tagging is consistent and Album Cover Art Downloader to check my Album Folder/track Art consistency.

gmediaserver

I have set up gmediaserver on an ubuntu box, and I can stream music, but, is there any way for it to send images also?

I was going to try ushare, as it supposedly supports images, but I cannot get the package, has anybody tried that?

Thanks

MikeL 2006-10-09 06:35

Looks like GMediaServer & MediaTomb Media Servers do not support Photo Images & Video?

Twonky Media Server runs on Linux and provides Image & Video support and there is a 30 "try it" version http://www.twonkyvision.de/Products/...dia/index.html

sevo 2006-10-09 12:49

gmediaserver can serve files of type "unknown" - but I haven't tried et whether media streamer is able to use them.

Seems that I was wrong! Twonky UPnP Media Server seems to pass Album Art to Media Streamer fine when it's correctly embedded in the Audio files as meta data.

I have it working well with my personal .mp3 and .wma audio files, you can read more in my blog, AV Media, Anytime, Anywhere!

$ gmediaserver --disable-id3 -ieth1 -v4 ./<path>

Before I just used:

$ gmediaserver -ieth1 -v4 ./<path>

Just thought I'd throw that out there for anyone who might have trouble using GMediaStreamer in the future.

I'm using gmediaserver 0.11 on Ubuntu Edgy. I always get playback error near the end of every song.
