Ignorant question here. I've installed it using Easy Mer. Is power and charging management working? When I plug it in I do not get any indicators.

Solved:

In Maemo run as root:
apt-get install battery-status

With all the screen shots of fremantle running on the new RX-51 makes me wonder. How much of those goodies will be compatible in mer? How much alike will the two systems be?

Weird, I thought I had battery-status as a dependency for Easy Mer...

On the bottom line we're quite compatible.. try seeing the screenshots here - that's various things from Extras that are genuine Fremantle apps, on top of Mer.

Hi

Thank you for developing such good platform. I have Smart Q5 and think that MER is the best OS for it. I run Mer from SD card, it works, but I still couldn't make Wifi to work. I copied sd8686 files as per Wiki, but it still shows "device not managed"

In dmesg:

8686 sdio: sd 8686 driver
8686 sdio: Copyright HHCN 2009
sd8686_sdio: probe of mmc2:0001:1 failed with error -1

Could somobody help me?
I also has the same bug in 0.16 test3

testing4 will have a better wifi installation. However, this might also be a HW error. We've seen 'loose' wifi chips.

Re: [Mer] 0.15 released - another month + a week gone by

Thank you for reply

Ok, I'll wait for testing4. But it is not h/w problem as Wi-Fi works good in stock OS and Android

Best regards,

Ok, I confess that I can't figure out what's wrong. :(

I can't get wifi working on my N800 Mer install. NM-applet reports various problems, depending on what I've tried (restarting Network Manager, restarting dbus, restarting tablet-wireless)... Is there some way to debug this more fully?

meizirkki 2009-08-25 08:21

Re: [Mer] 0.15 released - another month + a week gone by

If you unpacked the rootfs with ubuntu machine, NM and dbus are not gonna work. Make sure you are you using Mer bootmenu.

Like Meizirkki says: untar the image from the tablet or mount your memory card on the computer manually (i.e. don't have automounted) and unpack it then.

Memory cards are auto-mounted with anal-retentive options like nodev, etc. which NetworkManager does not like. I had been through ~5/7 installs of Mer wondering why NetworkManager kept saying "Wireless card not found" (or something like that)...

I should start the "NM should die" campaign soon...

Re: [Mer] 0.15 released - another month + a week gone by

I'm pretty sure I did everything on-tablet. But I might have done something else wrongly... So there's no way to debug this once I've got things set up?

BTW: Welcome back, Meizirkki! I've missed having you around the Alternatives forums!

The major showstopper for me is that I haven't managed to get BT DUN connectivity to work.

I'm using Easy Mer, but I'm able to connect using BT DUN on an Alltel Motorola VE465. There is no disconnect option so to disconnect I put it into offline mode.

Well, the good thing about the official N900/Maemo 5 announcement is that Mer will be getting a lot more eyes. I wonder what .16 and .17 have in the plans, as it seems that .15 will be getting an even more through inspection from potential users?

Vacation gives me some free time so I'm willing to add APM support for SmartQx. All I need is docs or some other info (e.g. dbus signals, hal device udi and may be something more) and battery control package name. Also support for all other unsupported devices can be added. Contact me, if it's still needed.

when I'm in mer, how can I re-order the icons in the menu??
if I go to the control panel, the device freezes and I have to hard-reboot( open the panel and remove the battery!!!)

and another question, when will be released the 0.16?? I'm very excited about this project!!!

Re: [Mer] 0.15 released - another month + a week gone by

Having played with .15 for a while and decided it wasn't quite there for me yet I decided to wait for the official n900 announcement. Now I've decided I won't be getting one I thought I should check up on Mer.

Is a new version expected soon? Secondly I'm willing but woefully unable, do you have any use for someone who is willing to learn, has spare time but absolutely no experience of programming?

Re: [Mer] 0.15 released - another month + a week gone by

It was my understanding that a new version was expected approximately now, but maybe it slid a bit again.

In this forum the last time I remember seeing a revised release date is here.

However, on the Mer wiki page, I found a link to this.

And since here, the OBS issue seems to be resolved, so hopefully after all the excitement of the n900 subsides a little we should be looking forward to a new release.

Re: [Mer] 0.15 released - another month + a week gone by

Man I was really looking forward to test Mer on real hardware (I've been playing on Virtualbox for a long time, but it is not the same thing...), and now that I got an old 770 and a 2Gb MMC card I set everything up with mer0.16testing5 and... the horror! :(
I missed the swap bug on 770 (lol, maybe I need to pay more attention :D) and now it's sitting on my desk, stuck with a nice deep blue sea wallpaper (and no LL Cool J with his faithful parrot).
Now, the One Million Dollars question is: can I do something to fix it booting from flash or I have to wait next mer step and start all over?

Anyway Mer team is doing a really good work, I really like to see Mer+Illume on my old hand-picked-from-trash laptop :D
Thank you all guys ;)

Wait for testing6, saju found the bug regarding swap. Missing 's' in swap.

Sorry all for the delay in 0.16. We had a really bad bug in NetworkManager applet going from Maemo GTK 2.12 to 2.14. Assumptions in UI code == bad.

Are you serious? :D What do I have to edit to add the s? :p At least I will be able to boot :)

Ah, I found the file... 45swap in /etc/first-boot.d missing first "s" of swap... but I'm unable to edit it on device because I cant umount /media/mmc1 which is corrupted according to my 770... nor i can mount mmcblk0p1 as I did while following mer installation guide on 770... d'oh!

I did it! :D now booting... uhm... still only sea wallpaper...
The top toolbar appears for a second, then everything is calmly embraced by the depths of the ocean...

Well, luckily for us you're not Microsoft... otherwise we whould have needed SP19.5-b03 to fix it 12 years after the OS release :D

Re: [Mer] 0.15 released - another month + a week gone by

Sorry if this is a complete lame-o and rookie post. I installed the easy-mer package last night, but it won't start up. I get a white screen, and then it goes back to the desktop. Everything else that installed with the package works perfectly: openoffice, iceweisel, debian desktop, etc. (BTW, HUGE HUGE HUGE props to you guys for improving the OpenOffice and Ice Weisel performance --- it's amazing and now I don't need maemo Tear!) Anyhow, easy-mer may not running due to my being overexcited and trying to launch easy-mer before downloading the image; hopefully, this didn't screw anything up.

Am I missing a step? Am I doing something wrong? I looked through the wiki and googled around, but didn't find anything on this specific issue.

I'm on an N800 with diablo.

qole 2009-09-18 17:14

Re: [Mer] 0.15 released - another month + a week gone by

It sounds like you're still using your Easy Debian image. You do need to download the Easy Mer image. And if you already have, then check your ~/.chroot file and make sure it has the right IMGFILE= line (pointing to your Easy Mer image).

Post your future questions in the Easy Mer thread.

Thank you everyone involved in developing Mer. I guess all the focus & chatter over the N900 and the relative quiet on the Mer front is making anxious for some Mer news. Can someone offer a tease or some sense of progress to look forward to?

I installed the flash version a few weeks ago.
Will it get faster with the next releases? I can remember it was daaaamn slow - but looks good ;-)

Re: [Mer] 0.15 released - another month + a week gone by

A re-written timeline on http://wiki.maemo.org/Mer/Releases would be cool... is there any chance to do a serious guess about .17/.18/....?

you know, a dated release schedule makes a project look - dead. (and you only know it isn't when you follow sources that are not so obvious to the casual reader in the wiki).

RichS 2009-09-28 17:59

Re: [Mer] 0.15 released - another month + a week gone by

I keep checking this thread eagerly. An updated timeline would be great.

Also a question, while I realise it wont be high on your priorities will there be mouse support available in Mer and if so will it be more useable than the solution in Diablo?

Keep up the good work.

Stskeeps 2009-09-30 17:54

Re: [Mer] 0.15 released - another month + a week gone by

Right, updated timeline:

This week (wk40): we're copying internally in OBS current development into :Testing and :0.16.

Next week (wk41): 0.16 release, Maemo Summit

Week 44: 0.17 testing phase starts
Week 45: 0.17 release

Week 48: 0.18 testing phase (or whatever name we call it)
Week 49: 0.18 release

HTH

1. What device are you using?
2. What do you mean? "Power Manager?"

The battery meter for n8x0 can be enabled via control panel or by editing the ~/.osso/hildon-desktop/statusbar.conf if that's what you're looking for.. :)

Re: [Mer] 0.15 released - another month + a week gone by

In less than an hour I hope to be able to use latest testing release on my 770 :)

Uhm... advanced backlight doesn't work... Do I have to install a modified kernel under OS2008 to enable it?
The "Settings" window is missing all the icons and clicking on the text has no effect.
Tear seems to render pages in "fit to width" mode, resulting in cut menus and weird symbols on screen.
Network Manager crashes upon reconnection to a wifi AP :(

I guess there's still some work to do...

I was overoptimistic... Mer doesn't work, powering off the device or rebooting leaves the user with an empty desktop...
Only the first session works (right after installation, when everything is set up) with glitches... :(
