Re: Maemo Community Council: September election announcement

As those of you who read maemo-community might know, I've decided not to run for the council this time.

I'm really proud of being a part of the first two councils, and the level of trust Nokia placed in us with the recruitment of the debmaster; chairing the sprint meetings for the gang-of-four; the decisions over the summit and inviting us to the launch of the N900 at Nokia World.

My enthusiasm for Maemo is not diminished; indeed, with the launch of the N900, I'm as excited now as I was waiting for the launch of the 770 back in November 2005. However, after a year on the council, I'm now looking forward to six months as "just" a normal community member. I've not come to this decision easily, and I'm very happy to have had such warm words of encouragement. My reasons are two-fold:
  1. There are many other members of the community who should have a chance to represent us. In particular, I'm very happy that Stephen (sjgadsby), Valério (VDVsx) and Graham (gcobb) have chosen to accept my nomination of them. The fact they're joined by the likes of Alan Bruce (qole), Gary Birkett (lcuk) and Jay Carter (zerojay) - and others - is even better.
  2. The vitriol and nastiness spewed by a very vocal, but tiny, minority of people on talk.maemo.org - especially regarding the transition of internettablettalk.com to talk.maemo.org - took a lot of the fun away. Given the massive investment of time my role as chair required, taking the fun away removed one of the main motivations for me.

I still plan on being an active (and vocal) community member both as a developer, a community evangelist and as a user. I hope that if you would have voted for me, you consider voting for one of the excellent candidates we have standing (and we have many!). In particular, Stephen, Valério and Graham have all been long term contributors in many different ways and are tolerant, helpful people. I will struggle to cast my single transferable vote for them, Gary, Alan and Jay.

However whomever you vote for, please do vote (once you receive your voting tokens)! I think that the Community Council has been far more effective than I ever imagined it could be when I suggested it back in 2008 and I look forward to seeing where this community will go in the next six months

Re: Maemo Community Council: September election announcement

I am looking for some clarification here...

It talks about people being eliminated? Is this if they drop out? Or is there some way for them to be eliminated?

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Choose your candidates in the order of your preference by clicking on them. Don't worry, if you click on someone by mistake you can correct it later. Once you are happy with the order, submit your vote. You will have the chance to review and confirm your ballot on the next page.

You can vote for as few or as many candidates as you choose. Your vote will be counted for your first choice candidate as long as he is still in the race, and when he is eliminated, your vote will transfer to the next preference candidate still in the race.

Possible choices:
Candidates

* Randall Arnold (Texrat)
* Jason Carter (zerojay)
* Matthew Lewis(penguinbait)
* Alan Bruce (qole)
* Andrew Black (AndrewFBlack)
* Stephen Gadsby (sjgadsby)
* Valerio Valerio (VDVsx)
* Graham Cobb (gcobb)

This is due to the use of a Single Transferable Vote (STV) system for the election. Looking at how the last election shook out may help in understanding how STV works in practice.

For someone running for the council, you don't half ask a lot of questions about the mechanisms of applying and how the election is run!

Given it was such a bone of contention in the first election, and the referenda on voting was held only 6 months ago, I'm amazed you can forget (the headaches) so quickly!

I am unable to vote.

My login worked, but selecting on candidates does nothing. I am using IE7; I will try another browser later at home.

Oh, we didn't tell you. We had a referendum a few months ago and decided that you have to use a real browser or else we disenfranchise you. The results where unanimous. Might have had something to do with the fact that you had to use a real browser to vote. . . .

Oh well, you want this.

More seriously, I think IE7 compatibility was tested during the last election. Seems like I recall it working OK. Could be more of those implanted false memories, though.

Firefox is illegal where I work except for privleged developers.

I have IE8 and Chrome at home. Or heck, I can always try microb...

Well, my trusty old N800 running OS 4.2007.26-8 got a little farther, but still no complete joy. It lets me select candidates, but when I move to the next screen, none are there and the app claims I'm choosing to vote for no one.

*sigh*

(and yes, I have that old OS still on there for a reason :p)

Use IE to run Java to run X11 over HTTPS to run Firefox ;)

Like this stunnel + javavncviewer or WeirdX/WiredX.

Jay,

You should have received your voting e-mail in your primary e-mail account on maemo.org (not talk.maemo.org). Check your junk e-mail accounts and stuff.

The title of the e-mail is:

Maemo Community Council election - voting instructions

Re: Maemo Community Council: September election announcement

Of the 303 ballots, only 298 of them are non-empty. Still that was a somewhat better turn-out than last election, when only 161 valid ballots were cast.

I downloaded OpenSTV and ran the ballots (for some reason, the election title is on two lines in that file; this needs to be fixed before the ballot file works in OpenSTV)....

And as holder of the Sacred Secret Magic maemo.org Council Hat, I can say that .... It's going to be a very interesting term.

I'm afraid not, guys. I'm not chairman material. We need a person who is good at organization for that kind of thing.

Honestly, I'm not council material either. However, my name is well known.

For those who won't bother to run the ballots in openSTV (and fix the election title in the ballot file). Here's a copy-paste from my run at the ballots. Still waiting for the official results though.

Edit: Can someone verify that I used the correct counting method?

That's still a little low given we put so much work into a) communicating it and b) identifying tmo users who were eligible to vote with emails directing them how to sort themselves out.

It seems "increasing council election turnout" should be another goal for the next council as well.
