Thanks. I will be mentioning it on the wiki but not until its available in extras.

On that note anyone, what is the current procedure for promotion with N8X0 apps do we go through testing? or is this just for the N900 ??

Rick

Good idea.

I also agree with Matyas. This sucker is ready to ship and should be promoted to extras when it passes whatever QA requirements maemo.org has established.

Let us know if there is anything the rank and file membership can do to help facilitate this...

Just promoted to extras. :) :)

It should be visible within an hour.

Will there be a version for N900 too?

rcull 2009-10-19 19:58

Once I get an N900 ( pre-ordered ) and the python runtime for it is sorted. Yes :)

Re: [Announce] 'advoid' a hostfile based ad blocker

BTW: Does anyone know about the current state of extras<>downloads.maemo.org integration?

There was a time when all apps had to be manually added to downloads.maemo.org; then I remember somebody running a script that automatically added all packages from Extras to the downloads section... But I'm not sure if this was done only once or if happens on a regular basis now.

In other words: Will anyone have to add advoid do the downloads section manually or will it simply appear there after a few day now that it's in Extras?

Re: [Announce] 'advoid' a hostfile based ad blocker

advoid is now in downloads :) :) :)

... and already rated. ;)

Oh, btw, you could write a short summary of the info you gave in this thread (files it creates/changes, what to do if something breaks etc.) and put it in the www directory of your garage proect as html.

this will serve as a nice homepage for the application and can be linked from the downloads section for people who want more background info.

Thank for the rating. I'll try and combat my laziness and do something with the homepage :D

Is it not possible to block a specific graphic?

Say something like www.place.com/stupid.jpg.

I've tried this a few times but it doesn't seem to take for some reason.

Re: [Announce] 'advoid' a hostfile based ad blocker

Given that this is hostfile based, i suspect it is not possible. It can only block specific hostnames by basically redirecting it to the loopback address (127.0.0.1).

dchky 2011-04-02 03:25

Re: [Announce] 'advoid' a hostfile based ad blocker

Just a question if I might, I haven't seen anyone ask it yet, but what is the performance impact on the N900 when using a very large host file? The list has to be scanned every time a lookup is needed so definitely there will be a delay - I'm guessing from all the positive comments that the delay is not noticeable.

I saw mention of 127.0.0.1 being used for the IP which is maybe not as fast as using 0.0.0.0 instead. Any thoughts on that?

tso 2011-04-02 03:36

Re: [Announce] 'advoid' a hostfile based ad blocker

not sure if going broadcast vs loopback have any noticeable difference.

rcull 2011-04-02 06:15

Re: [Announce] 'advoid' a hostfile based ad blocker

You can block any URL so if you inspect the source and find the link to the jpg then if the path to it is a full URL ( ie not just a local reference ../images/xxx.jpg ) you can specifically block it.

Any slowdown due to host table lookup is more than offset by the speed increase due to not having to fetch the adds.

Hey rcull.

I would like to block this image of unhappiness. :)

Re: [Announce] 'advoid' a hostfile based ad blocker

Addison
I may not have been completely clear in my last post. What you are blocking is the server, so for instance on your URL what you would block is the whole of http.cndlayer.com. If the image is local, ie. on the same server as the rest of the content, which I suspect it is, then you would be blocking the complete site. In which case it makes no sense.

The only way to do this without affecting the rest of the content would probably be by using some sort of css.

Re: [Announce] 'advoid' a hostfile based ad blocker

The problem with CSS is that while it will hide the image, it will still be downloaded in the background (iirc). I toyed with using CSS to block those facebook fan boxes a while back as they caused Tear to reload the page continually. While it could hide the box from view, it did nothing to stop the reloading as that was part of the javascript driving the box.

I think I goosed something bad on another forum I tend to visit.

I was there at the time when I was using Advoid, now none of the images are being shown anymore.

Any suggestions?

Re: [Announce] 'advoid' a hostfile based ad blocker

I guess I just need to know where the host file is so that I can delete it and start all over again.

Because yeah, nothing else that I do seems to be working.

Thanks!

The hostfile is /etc/hosts, but you do not want to delete it entirely. That would likely create larger problems than you're experiencing now.

The thread starter indicates you should be able to "Revert to Default":

You should always be able to 'Revert to Default' putting your hostfile back as it was initially before running this program.

Have you tried that option?

Addison 2011-04-11 01:39

Re: [Announce] 'advoid' a hostfile based ad blocker

Yeah, I have reverted to default, uninstalled, reinstalled, even deleted what I those was cdn.layer (?) in the host file because I think that's where all of the graphics come from on my other forum, but no luck on any of this.

rcull 2011-04-11 01:41

Re: [Announce] 'advoid' a hostfile based ad blocker

Just revert to default

rcull 2011-04-11 01:44

Re: [Announce] 'advoid' a hostfile based ad blocker

Addison
The hostfile is in :-

/etc/hosts

You should not delete this file but after a revert to default there should only be a few lines in there.

Have you tried temporarily moving your ~/.mozilla folder to, say, ~/.mozilla-old to make certain it's not a MicroB problem you're fighting? If that doesn't help, you can always remove the new .mozilla folder the Maemo Browser creates and move .mozilla-old back to .mozilla.

Addison 2011-04-11 02:18

Re: [Announce] 'advoid' a hostfile based ad blocker

I did Revert to Default.

It's only showing Nokia-N800-43-7 under Show System.

My forum site is still all super poopy. *lol*

I'll look into your suggestions, sjgadsby. Thank you. :)

I'm also using Tear if this means anything.

If you're using Tear, than moving .mozilla won't help. That directory is just for MicroB.

I tried going to my site under MicroB and the forum there is almost unusable.

I should take a screen shot of all of the weirdness now.

Give me a minute and I'll post it.

have you been playing with CSS?

Addison 2011-04-11 05:52

Re: [Announce] 'advoid' a hostfile based ad blocker

I haven't done anything with CSS rcull.

I just reflashed yesterday and only have been installing junk back on my tablet.

Everything was fine, but I was at that forum site using Tear Web Browser when I opened Advoid and then obviously I didn something wrong with your app.

I feel like such a pill. :)

post the contents of /etc/hosts

it is the only file that Advoid accesses.

This is all there is. 36 bytes worth of junk in that file.

127.0.0.1 Nokia-N800-43-7 localhost

What filthy piece of turd, have I done now? *lol*

Thank you both for helping me on this. :)

That 36 bytes of junk is fine as it is. There is nothing wrong with your hostfile.

Addison 2011-04-12 15:30

Re: [Announce] 'advoid' a hostfile based ad blocker

Okay.

Well, is there some kind of app where I can search through all of my files to find cdnlayer.com inside of them?

Something is blocking all the images from that site.

rcull 2011-04-12 19:54

Re: [Announce] 'advoid' a hostfile based ad blocker

What did you do to need a reflash in the first place?

Flashing does not overwrite config files in your home folder. Any changes done before a reflash that are saved in local config files may still be in use.

Addison 2011-04-12 21:17

Re: [Announce] 'advoid' a hostfile based ad blocker

I reflashed because most likely I had installed some broken packages awhile back.

My tablet would completely chunk up, minutes at a time for no apparent reason, to the point where I couldn't play music on it anymore.

I've never had a problem browsing any sites though unless the tablet started getting all chunky on me again.

After the reflash it's back to being wonderful except for this only thing here.

I really love that one forum site, spending about an hour there daily, but the way it is now, it's practically unusable.

I found cdnlayer.com in the file /home/user/.advoid/tmphost and deleted that entry.

It's still not showing any images.

Are you sure there's no other place for me to look rcull?

Thank you. :)

rcull 2011-04-13 05:54

Re: [Announce] 'advoid' a hostfile based ad blocker

Addison

There is nothing in your Advoid setup which will affect your web experience at the moment. The files in /home/user/.advoid are just saved copies of system and update files.
The way advoid works is that it adds unreachable addresses to your hostfile '/etc/hosts', your hostfile is currently the default hostfile (just the one line) so I can categorically state that your problem has absolutely nothing to do with Advoid.
There must be something else wrong with your system, thats why I asked about what was done before youre reflash.

Rick

Eep!

It's back to working again. :)

Weird since I didn't do a single thing except for a full reboot.

Maybe I was just low on memory though I have 65 megs still free.

Anyway, thanks for your patience with me Rick. :)
