Re: Quake 3 on N900

For most of the first person shooters a mouse is very essential at least for me. I guess its because I am not used to console games. Good thing BT HID support won't be so hard on the N900.

Yes, it would be nice to add support for at least a Bluetooth mouse as the aiming on the touchscreen can be quite hard. This was the reason behind addind the auto aim.

However, if your playing against other players who don't have an external mouse it would give you a pretty big advantage...

P.S. Posting from the bus on my way to the summit now. I'll have better connectivity there. :)

Yes, it's just a configuration option, com_maxfps, in autoexec.cfg. You can easily remove that line. :)

Ahh yes, naughty, as there isn't Punkbuster for Linux/ARM... totally forgot that. Rules out many games.

Hmm, in some previous games there was no difference between Y axis aiming. These games didn't require a mouse. Stuff like Doom.

Re: Quake 3 on N900

Just to let you know, the package has now been sent to the autobuilder a few minutes ago... So assuming no problems, it should be available soon.

Honestly, I'm not deliberately trying to tease you all. :D

omcfadde 2009-10-11 11:47

Re: Quake 3 on N900

The package has been successfully compiled by the autobuilder, but it might take some time before it shows up in extras (and you need to click the update button on the Application Manager.)

Some more creative users have found the link already but will need to manually install the dependencies. e.g. libgles1.

IMHO the perfect setup would be to tie accelerometer to the xy axis as the mouse so you tilt the phone to turn/look up, arrow keys for movement and space for fire with whatever else you want as the jump/weapon buttons.

Yeah, it's quite possible someone else could come up with a better input solution. The one in use now works quite well, but there definitely is room for improvement.

Also there are still a couple of bugs, the main one at the moment is the menu requiring double taps... I'll try to get it sorted out as soon as I have time.

Btw, useful key combos:
Fn (Blue Arrow) + Ctrl/Sym = Open/Close console.
Fn + = (Next to backspace) = Esc key.

Our keyboard is a bit limited with only 3 rows so I had to be a little creative here.

Re: Quake 3 on N900

FYI, you should probably wait for ioquake3_1558-maemo2 (rather than maemo1) as I accidentally forgot the autoexec.cfg in maemo1. The game will still run if you start it manually, but you won't get nice defaults.

Re: Quake 3 on N900

@omcfadde

cheers, if i recall it was pretty easy to change the mouse binding in quake so ill have to have a play with the accelerometer once the n900 finally ships. how it is exposed in linux is another matter but it sounds like hacking time, sods law the n900 will likely ship 2 days before i have a month long testing program at work.

Re: Quake 3 on N900

Well, I aimed to get this up before the end of the summit, which I guess I technically did, but it seems there is some problem with the extras-devel repo at the moment... But hopefully it updates and fixes itself quickly...

Yip,

Quote:

bind MOUSE1 "+attack" // Set mouse button 1 to attack or fire.
bind MWHEELDOWN "weapnext" // Set mouse wheel backwards to change weapon.
bind MWHEELUP "weapprev" // Set mouse wheel forwards to change weapon.
bind MOUSE2 "+moveup" // Set right mouse button to jump.
bind MOUSE3 "weapon 1" // Mouse button3 or less the wheel in the middle of the mouse down.
Can change in autoexec.cfg or use ~ (tilde) to get Quake console and /execute the command.

Ohho PS +hook, Q2+Lithium forever :D

Re: Quake 3 on N900

I just arrived back in Helsinki, after missing my scheduled flight. Hooray for non-refundable/changeable/you're screwed tickets...

Anyway, for those of you who want to try the (very experimental and still buggy) Quake 3, here's what you need to do:

After following those instructions there should be a Quake 3 icon in the "More..." menu in the task launcher. You can also add a shortcut to your desktop.

Please keep in mind, there are still bugs, and I still have hesitations about releasing this so early, but many people at Maemo Summit asked me about it...

@omcfadde

Could someone in Helsinki shoot the video again? =P I am dying to see the videos blowing out my mind and couldn't resist to show it off to iPhone fanboys and blast Engadget.

I'm sure that Quim and others are working to get the videos from the summit online as soon as possible, but remember, it's 01:00 in Helsinki now, so probably nothing will happen until the morning.

You might have to wait a bit longer; honestly I have no idea what the plans for editing and getting the videos online are. Keep watching this space though. :)

About the videos, we have 3 days x 3 tracks of videos so please understand if it takes few days to have everything up.

About the packages:

http://maemo.org/packages/view/ioquake3/

And remember:

Seriously: don't send users out of Extras without a big warning

It does look a bit fiddly. Either that or your Quake skills are even more rudimentary than mine. ;)

Awesomeness... time to release the N900 already!

PS What resolution does it run at? Is that software scaling or native WVGA?

I'll check into this later tonight; it may be that there is a problem with the packaging that I didn't notice on my RD config.

In 41-10 (fresh flash), I am able to install this pretty much out of the box (so to speak) after adding extras-devel.

With 39-9, I had to take the library from nokia-binaries.

Its running at the native resolution, 800x480.

I haven't tested the battery life, but yeah, it is going to put quite a drain on the battery.

Aimbotter!

That's really some for-serious autoaim. There was a time when I would've called a demo like that evidence. :D

Somebody should implement a fuzzier console-style autoaim.

I have plans to do this in my free time (along with other improvements.) Alternatively, the community can convince Nokia to make this an official project. ;)

On the display, it's in really magnificient quality. 800x480 pixels, very high pixel density.

The blur-fest of the video is due to the following factors reducing that resolution:
  • TV-Out is PAL (720×576)
  • I filmed in 640x480
  • I filmed a wider area than just the TV screen so that you can see the Nokia screen in parallel with the TV and get some of the accelerometer action
  • Youtube resolution is 480x360

It would be great if we sent a link to the video to our favourite blogs as free publicity for this wonderful device/platform.

I don't know if somebody has mentioned this already, but if you don't have the full version handy, but still want to try out Q3A on your N900, you can get the Quuake 3 Demo data files from here:

http://www.idsoftware.com/games/quak...e_section=demo

Install the demo on your PC and copy the pak0.pk3 file from the demoq3 folder to /home/user/baseq3/ and it should work :)
