There was an advert in the London Metro newspaper which said coming soon (to 02). Was rather surprised to read about it's imminent arrival that way given how close I keep my ear to mobile developments!

I wouldn't mind owning one if it would get Froyo.

Whoa, available unlocked. Certainly not what I expected for a cellular device from a US manufacturer.

Re: Dell Releases What n900 Should Have Been (Dell Streak)

Only expandable to 32gb :(

I put good use to the n900's 32gb plus a 32gb card.

as to the screen size, I thought the Japanese had taught us that smaller is better :)

only kidding on that last point, but, it's true

I know and $500 seems a fair price too

I have an Archos 5 Android and if its anything similar it will be unwieldy to use for long stretches as a phone.

I supect the HD2 design maxed out with a 4.5 " screen hopefully in its succesor will prove to be the most optimal.

FWIW, comments by a few people in that article are suggesting 2.2 will be coming to it OTA by years end.

The same also mentioned below...

That's what Bluetooth headsets are for. Bonus if they have a mic adapter for the headphone jack. Saves you the weight, the bizarre sight of holding a huge slab to your face, and a cheekprint on the screen you have to clean off later.

Re: Dell Releases What n900 Should Have Been (Dell Streak)

yep, the phone part is mostly for data everywhere. But it also made it possible to get google approval on a 1.6 device.

a a2dp headphone set may be a good combo.

I don't trust such blank statements. "By years end" means nothing

I know you were. I remember reading up on some Samsung Android device that couldn;t be upgrade past 1.6. The phone just came out and most of the users were expecting a 2.1 upgrade

Future is behind devices like N900 that simply fits in your pocket with computer capabilities. It just not there yet with its speed and power but very, very close. In less than few years there will be more powerful than N900. And all the tablet things is just another gimmick for people who has money and don't know what do with it so they are looking for something to amuse themselves.

Years end is going to be a touch choice, dell streak with android 2.2 and hardware accelerated flash, or the first meego phone from nokia. choices choices as to which company will get my money.

recent photos of a dock that provides hdmi and usb seems to indicate that with the right setup it can work as a desktop computer.

sure hope the next nokia will bring back usb-otg.

Re: Dell Releases What n900 Should Have Been (Dell Streak)

The attraction of this device to me is the screen size, I am (and always have been) after a Psion 5 replacement really, but that means I'd like a keyboard (and a stylus) too.

While the N800 was fine for playing music and browsing the web, the lack of a kb was a real pita when writing text, editing spreadsheets, etc.

OTOH, as the screen on the Dell is physically larger, I imagine the on-screen keyboard could be made to take up a smaller proportion of the screen and still be usable.

Anyway, I'm not sold on it, and the fact it runs Android is not ideal either.

tso 2010-06-03 11:50

Re: Dell Releases What n900 Should Have Been (Dell Streak)

i think what nokia did wrong with the N800 keyboard was that it pushed the window out of the way. Opera and android on the other hand either makes the input area bigger (or move the actual input somewhere else entirely) while overlaying the window without disturbing it.

it would be like the cell of a spreadsheet would scale up when you tapped it, so that you had plenty of space to edit in, and then scale back down when done.

Re: Dell Releases What n900 Should Have Been (Dell Streak)

Is there any real talk on attempting to porting Maemo or the smartphone Meego OS(when it's released) to Dell Streak?

I don't want to say which is the best device for anyone else.

For me, an updated version of the N810 would be perfect. I was disappointed when I found that they shrunk the N900 to its current size.

I am definitely interested in the larger screen but not too big (again for me) on the Dell Streak, wish there was a physical keyboard, but oh well...

I am really enjoying the Maemo OS on the N900 and I would love to continue to use it on the Dell Streak when it's released in the US.

I'm fairly end-user GUI savvy, but wouldn't know where to begin to installing a non native OS on such a customized device as a smartphone/tablet.

I did see a few previous posts regarding flashing or porting an OS to the Streak, but it still seems that it may be possible.

Is anyone seriously looking into this?

No, unfortunately there are som binary only drivers (however, the N900/Maemo 5 is still probably the most open mass produced phone/OS)"

But that's not the primary goal. It is a tablet first then phone second.

the phone part is primarily there so google could go "ok, you can have google apps and marketplace" without looking like it favored a major company vs the many smaller ones making similar products.

Yeah, but no one bought that line for the N900. I don't see why the Streak should get an exception just because it's XBOX HUEG.

Understood, but when I am travelling around I don't want to carry a separate device. I need those "smart" features integrated into my phone. Don't really see the value of this over a cheap netbook, unless you really need that tablet form factor...

They are apparently in stock and on display in o2 shops today.. might go for a wander for some head on action see if it looks any dafter than being on the phone on the n900..

So it'll work out the box then? All hardware supported etc etc etc.

With a development life cycle, support from manufacturer, app store, working maps, etc etc etc.

Great, can't wait to get one. Where do I sign up?

Re: Dell Releases What n900 Should Have Been (Dell Streak)

just been hands on with it in the o2 shop till i got too anoyed by the sales banter..
it's massive! like proper massive. forget putting it in your pocket.
on screen keyboard is pathetic.. not sure if that's because it's capacitive.. in fact screen felt very odd to use.
Itms pretty snappy.. not much waiting around..
feels more busnessy than the 900.. everything seems plainer.
the wallpapers don't loop?? is this true on all androids.
in fact the ui has quite a few oddities feels a bit awkward..
o2 say they're only having the black
only mono speakers..
still evil google accounts required for everything..

i'd say overall.. definatly a tablet raather than a phone (moreso than n900) nice hardware.. shame about android...

I checked out a streak in o2 yesterday. Its thin and sleek but not as powerful as the n900. Tinny speaker also put me off. Not for me but good effort from Dell.
