Re: N900: Car Kit & Mounts

I contacted ProClipUSA about 3 weeks ago with regards to the Active holder, they assured me it would be on their site within a week. Contacted them last week and was told that they had them, just not posted on the site (and thus not for sale yet..).

I don't think they want to sell me one :(

Re: N900: Car Kit & Mounts

I received a message from a director of PDA Hut this morning, apologising for the delay with the Brodit active N900 holder in the UK:

Quote:

...it seems Brodit in Sweden have yet to release first stocks of Active Holders for the Nokia N900 series. These were due to to be in the UK earlier this week...
I'd still be interested to hear of any other sightings of the Brodit active holder in the UK ... otherwise I'll wait for PDA Hut to get their stock.

Simon.

Re: N900: Car Kit & Mounts

I have several of the Ram mount products I've used for other gadgets but they don't have anything that looks good for the N900. I contacted them and asked if the Brodit mount can be mated with their mounting hardware because they both use the "AMPS" hole pattern and they said yes. Gonna order the brodit passive holder because I want the flexibility of a separate power cable. Sometimes I just want to throw it on a charger and not mount it to the windshield.

Apparently (according to Morpheth mobiles / getmounted) there has been a problem with the phone side coating (flock they say) on the mounts and they were recalled to get fixed. No idea how accurate that is (could just be a yarn of course.)

I've used DSL in the past and have been very satisfied and they are still saying pre-order with no date that I can see. There are three N900 car holders listed there (and they get pretty pricey)

why would you need the camera button whilst driving?

Because of the possibility to access the phone application fast by using shortcutd or to switch fast the task without looking at the screen: switch between running applications

The shortcut to reach the phone application using the power button is also not working. It's also covered. :(

ProClip N900 vehicle mounts now out

I just got an email from ProClip USA that their Nokia N900 vehicle mounts are now out. You can choose from three different tilt swivel holders:
  • Plain Holder with Tilt Swivel - $34.99
  • Charging Holder with Tilt Swivel and Cigarette Lighter Adapter - $59.99
  • Charging Holder with Tilt Swivel and Straight Power Cord for Fixed Installation - $79.99

Note that along with the holder, you also need to purchase a vehicle mount specific to your vehicle.

Check them out: http://www.proclipusa.com/default.as...54&d_cat=18086

Wow, an extra $25 just for a power connector? That's pretty steep...

Thanks now all I got to do is see which one I want lol :) and to the other post that is kinda steep :(

Re: ProClip N900 vehicle mounts now out

very expensive!!!

£91 for an active mount and no-holes-bracket.

Re: ProClip N900 vehicle mounts now out

it doesnt look too safe to me .... it appears to be a plastic mould that the n900 will sit quite flushly in but i cant see any pressure areas that will hold the n900 into place when braking/accelerating/going round corners/over speed bumps etc etc ....
...... i have a universal adjustable holder which is perfect for my n900 .... holds it in place perfectly and securely ... i can type while its in the holder without it moving at all see this thread for my pics http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=41879&page=2

oh and it cost me £5 from a side street mobile phone shop!

Will let you guys know what its like.

I ordered one of these, and it arrived yesterday, and I am SO SO freakin impressed!!

the unit is compact, sturdy and holds the phone really well. I ordered from the same guy in the link above, and it arrived next day.

I can't tell you how happy I am with this item, and thank you so much to davemoir for posting this little gem! I was about to waste £40 on a brodit one, and this does the job just as well if not better.

If anyone needs any more 'real life' pictures let me know and I'll see what I can do, but the images on ebay should give you a good idea.

It's called the 'AIO PREMIUM CAR HOLDER & CHARGER FOR NOKIA N900 UK' and I can't wait for maps to be released now!

Re: ProClip N900 vehicle mounts now out

I got the "Charging Holder with Tilt Swivel and Cigarette Lighter Adapter" through yesterday.

I'm very impressed with the holder - the N900 fits in very well and is held securely, with the USB connection fitting perfectly. You can open and close the screen while it's in the holder as well.

I'm far less impressed with their mounting mechanism though - using 4 screws to connect the holder to the mount. Why not have some sort of a clip? That way the holder can be easily removed when not in use (or you could move the holder between cars, boats, planes, wherever you're wanting to use it). In addition to that, one of the mount clips broke while I was trying to fit it, so I'm now going to have to chase up a replacement :(

Re: ProClip N900 vehicle mounts now out

The Pro Clips are the same as Brodit?

If that is the case i have the passive mount and it is very well made and works well. The fact that you can operate the keyboard too whilst it is mounted is a big plus for me. However it is a tight fit so you have to line up the N900 fairly acuratly and I doubt it would work with any case cover.

See more here. :D

Yes - if you look at the "About Us" page on the ProClip site, it says they're the North American distributor for Brodit.

For UK users. I've just found this website.

http://www.car-mounts.co.uk/

And for Charging Holder with Tilt Swivel and Cigarette Lighter Adapter and the mount for my car it's coming in at a reasonable £49.90 (£15.65 + £34.25)!

I think I know what I'll be purchasing in the near future!

Re: N900: Car Kit & Mounts

I received a Brodit active car cradle from PDA Hut today (they were true to their word on Tues 9th) and it fits the N900 well, holds it snugly (portrait or landscape) and easily fit onto the same Brodit swivel I was previously using for my E71.

Good service from PDA Hut.

I went with the active holder from ProClipUSA, should be here next week, woohoo!

Is there a car holder that does not obstruct the camera lens?
I'd like to use the N900 as an in-car video recorder to have proof in case of traffic incidents.
See this brainstorm

wouldnt that require a massive amount of storage? unless you manually deleted each recording if your trip went without..err..'incident' :)

Would it be possible to see a picture of the end of the phone, where the headphone socket is while in the cradle? I am interested whether it is possible to plug it in while it is in the holder...

Thanks in advance!

Feels very study and well made and much better than their N95 mount. I decided on the passive mount as I already have a car charger and it is easier to mount my N900 as it mounts from the left side and means I do not have to adjust the mount position at all and can do it up tight.

It works well in portrait but I doubt I will ever use that, and the keyboard slides out very easily and all feels sturdy.

All in all I am extremely happy, now just need to sort out my noisy charger and await a proper Sat Nav solution :(

p.s. Is there a way to stop the screen timing out when in battery mode?

John

Hi All, new to the forum but not the site.

bockersjv, I am curious, I have the latest firmware, namely 3.2010.02-8, and yet I cannot use my N900 in portrait mode for anything at all except the phone. How did you manage that? I'm in the UK too, if that makes a difference, I might have downloaded the wrong firmware.

Cheers

bockersjv 2010-03-21 12:58

Re: N900: Car Kit & Mounts

I never use my N900 for portrait either, i have auto rotate for the phone that all. howver Sygic navigation also works in portrait mode.

I think you may have misunderstood, i meant the the brodit swivels so that the phone is upright in portrait mode, but that would only be of any use for the phone application (well and the web browser and sygic navigation) :D

P.s. I have the same firmware as you assuming it is the 203 variant.

for those people who bought this from ebay:

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/AIO-PREMIUM-CA...item27afb77391

Can anyone comment how tight the fit is and whether it's possible to use it if your N900 has an Invisible Shield body protection cover? I'm tempted to get this but don't want it to damage the Invisible shield protection on the side and back.

I also would like to check how the phone fits with invisible shield applied on it with this thing. Can also someone post actual photos with the phone attached?

Thanks
