Hopefully shopblt, amazon, newegg etc will carry stock by the end of the month.... otherwise I'd be regretting cancelling my NokiaUSA order...

You think I was literally suggesting Peter should hand deliver N900s as opposed to making a comment on the outrage expressed by many over a couple of weeks of delay? Maybe you should review my post history and figure out which is more likely and possibly refrain from telling people what they meant instead of what they said they meant ;)

I would assume that the concept of Peter delivering all pre-orders by hand was so ridiculous that even a child could have guessed it was a joke.

Did you REALLY think that was serious request???

Now mauybe we can get back to guessing whereabouts in China these pesky things are at the moment!

No
Webshop Customer Help says:
Nokia has started shippingh to stores not customers
Matt says:
okay so 16th is the date?
Webshop Customer Help says:
yes

Thanks for that, saves me bothering them too.

I'm happy with that, as long as mine is sent 16th and I get it 17th, I want I want it, I want it! lol - I haven't felt like this about anything for a long time, literally cannot wait until I see that high vis jacket of the Post man next Tuesday (I hope!!).

I hope it will also be released in Germany...
They neither updated the website nor they know anything about that. Also my seller said no - it's not released yet in Germany... :(

Now that I switched my order to Dell, and the phones actually been released, I'm starting to freak out a little wondering when, if ever, Dell is going to ship relative to other shops.

I'm not exactly sure the 42 stands for week 42.
But on NSU, that's what available.

I have not seen any other later firmwares.
If they are shipping now, I reckon that's the firmware it'll come with.

Let's hope Nokia produced some more units over the time so every store and distributor will have some and we'll get it by the weekend.

If Nokia shop doesn't deliver the handsets before other retailers ie Dell, that's a terrible play from Nokia.

Re: Nokia N900 begins shipping! - from nokia.com

There is a user guide available it seems.

Have a read, get to know the device while waiting for delivery :)

http://nds1.nokia.com/phones/files/g...N900_UG_en.pdf

I'm sure it'll be useful for those with 'lended' units as well (they didn't get a user guide).

you're just guessing, but presenting this information as fact.

i find it highly unlikely the devices will be shipped with 2 week old firmware (yes, the 42 stands for week 42).
the fact that these are currently on NSU doesn't say anything. that can change quickly.

I double check on Nokia site Can I Update? @ http://europe.nokia.com/get-support-...e/can-i-update

Go there and punched in a N900 product code ie UK 0560826 it says:

Latest available software for Nokia N900, product code 0560826
Version: 1.2009.42.11

How can you expect them to put anything newer on there when the newest is week 42 firmware?
Plus it has already started rolling out of the factory, pulling them all back and update the firmware?
What's the problem with having an old firmware? You can still update it at home.
The N97 on sale right now still have v10 in them (v10 is 4 months old)!

so?
you don't have a retail device. no one has. ergo you're guessing.
"latest available" means in the context of NSU. and as i said that can change quickly.

So you're saying the old firmware shouldn't be in there, that Nokia should pull back all the N900s already on its way out, unpack all the boxes, update the firmware on the phone, repack and send it out?

My point is if they already started shipment, that's the firmware the phone will have.

What's the point in arguing what firmware it has when you got it? It doesn't matter what firmware it has. You can just update it to the newest one at the time you got your device.

i know, and i'm telling you that you don't know that :)
it's just speculation. maybe they put an interim version on NSU so the preview-devices have an upgrade path to the release version.

If I remember well, N900 should have auto-update for it's firmware directly from the phone, ain't that right? So no need for NSU or web checks of available firmware versions.

Correct.
NSU would be consider as a tool to reinstall firmware/flash the N900

The web checks & update is similar to the current FOTA (Firmware Over The Air)

The 2 is similar but the technology is different.
For example, the latest v20 firmware for N97, when updating with NSU file size ~ 150mb but on FOTA it's only 15mb.

all i'm saying is that this statement:

shouldn't have been presented as a fact. that's the version on NSU right now, but that doesn't mean devices will ship with it.

nokia has been tweaking on the software the past few days (remember that delay-thingy? :) ), so why would they ship 4 week old software?

Laughing Man 2009-11-10 14:41

Re: OPK: N900 deliveries have now started!!

Because it takes a while to ship and package up electronic devices. To update the software would mean unpacking and updating them.

That or Nokia has blazing fast manufacturers that can create tons of n900s in a week. =P

then why the delay?

the devices have been in the assembly factories, waiting for the last firmware update. that apparently happened this weekend, now they're being packed and shipped.

no one would pack a delayed product, only to un- and repack it before shipping.

Rotkaeqpchen 2009-11-10 14:56

Re: OPK: N900 deliveries have now started!!

SubCore is right, this is why we had to wait. And the devices were not packed, before the latest software is installed! It's not the first device NOKIA has assembled!?

Re: OPK: N900 deliveries have now started!!

We'll see when they start arriving with people. It will certainly be interesting to see what the gap between the installed firmware date and today actually is.

mchu6am4 2009-11-10 15:02

Re: OPK: N900 deliveries have now started!!

That would have meant they shipped a device with problems without a solution - which they now have with a new firmware which everyone can update!

Thanks for that. We were just winding ourselves up on the "thread of all threads", as we only had retailers and rumours to go with.

The delay would be so that the new firmware update is available as soon as people unpack their device.

I don't know which it is but it could go either way. Nokia could have been manufacturing and packing N900s all this time with the expectation people update it as soon as they get it. They could also have been manufacturing them and leaving them aside to be factory flashed so they ship with the new firmware but that has a lot of logistical problems.

Quite honestly, not being sure about the ship date until the date of the shipping is a rather sad statement.

Regardless, congratulations to all the people out there who will now get their new phone.

Laughing Man 2009-11-10 15:07

Re: OPK: N900 deliveries have now started!!

Nokia has had a few problems when it comes to serving applications or even firmware updates to just the internet tablets. Imagine the n900 which has even more popularity!

And also it could be because there were bugs that could net in terrible reviews so they rather hold onto the device until those were fixed.

toratoko 2009-11-10 15:08

Re: OPK: N900 deliveries have now started!!

Are we being serious here...the device is released (confirmed release from Nokia to boot) and people still find some reason to complain. C'mon people, to update a firmware is a press of a button and an internet connection. Then to complain about not being part of the "300" team, or seeing specific bugs and results, get a life. Some of us don't work for Nokia, thus they are not responsible for releasing every specific detail to the public. This is how corporations work, I thought people knew this by now.

*Sorry if I come across hostile but today is my sick day and I'm quite aggravated for no apparent reason.

Re: OPK: N900 deliveries have now started!!

FYI: I just talked to Dell (they are still showing the guestimate delivery date of 10 Dec), and finally got to someone who looked up the status of the shipment coming from Nokia. Dell is estimating that shipments will head out to customers on 19 November.

Hope this helps.

Have to agree with you....

Waiting is painful, but in the end you realise that's half of the fun. I've never felt this way about any other device and I'm dying to get my hands on it... I thank nokia for giving me this feeling

Sweet news! My estimated ship date is Dec 7. Everytime I asked Dell they told me 'only production knows when it will really ship, that is just an estimate.'

I think it tells how efficient Nokia's logistic chain is. You can make changes until the very last possible moment, and when you decide to release, you get your devices quickly to the shops and the customers.
