Re: Is anyone using a N900 in India?

THere is another confusing aspect about the N900 to setup nokia messagin. After readin various forums i came to know that after you go to menu and click on email and want to setup nokia messaging..you get nokia messsaging as a service provider which i dont get. I get other providers like hotmail but they dont seem to be push emails. They jus check at particular time like 30 min interval which i dont want. I want that as soon as an email comes its shows on my mobile. I configured nokia messaging on nokia 5230 and that works perfect well.

ANy ideas about N900?

Hi people,

i am a big fan of nokia and am using N900 for over 2 weeks now and its running fine no reboots no backlight problem. initially it had some issues like blinking messages in conversations and web pages unable to load with a reload error and maps not opening , but all these bugs were fixed after the huge 90mb PR1-1 update via OTA . now i am using my N900 with idea cellular with an unlimited EDGE plan . and since N900 cant dial no.s starting with * or # . i use ussd widget and its great shows my balance with jst a touch . Mine is a UAE variant and i ordered it via Ebay India . Now my N900 is working like a charm with no new problems..

what about nokia messaging? do you see that as an option in the service providers list apart from other providers like gmail or hotmail. nokia messaging uses something else apart from gprs and hence ur not charged. And also its push email unlike other accounts

For Hyderabad, BSNL has launched 3G just 2 days back (http://www.ap.bsnl.co.in) and its the only available 3G option. For GPRS you can go for either BSNL or AIRTEL.

I think you have to enable vodafone mobile connect. I am using the same in chennai and have enabled gprs using vodafone mobile connect. I don't think vodafone live is a gprs connection. For me no issues.

i believe this is how vodafone has meant it to be. vodafone requires you to activate mobile connect if ur to legally use imap/pop email so maybe the same settings apply to the chat client.

no idea, i havent even been able to get thru to their customer care regarding this. perhaps u culd try it ?

when i tried with aircel th prob had frequently broken connections interrupting downloads from the repositiries.

BTW, i hope u all know that having the gprs connection always on will prevent most calls from coming in.. =)

I don't think having gprs always on will prevent the calls. I was using N93 before n900 and my gprs was always on due to the corporate mail app. the gprs will get disabled when u receive a call., I have downloaded many apps through gprs connection., (but not the apps which are in mb's...) i use the wifi at home to download them.

BSNL 3G launch in Hyderabad is definitely good news. I read that BSNL also launched 3G in Bangalore recently.

Has anyone tested BSNL 3G on their N900? How is the bandwidth? Can anyone post the mobile speedtest results?

Nevermind. Just found that Varun already posted about this in the same thread above. 1 MBPS is still decent :) IMO.

Now we just have to wait for that never-ending 3G auction process for private players to kick in.

thats a pity...cos the data plan with mobile connect is so expensive..200pm for just the rent n then download is 10p/10kb (correct me if i am wrong) whereas here i get 500mb in Rs100.

its a bug yes but its not there in all phones n with all networks...there was a very long thread for it somewhere but cant find it now..ya i tested this on my phone from different networks and i had no problems!

sachin007 2010-03-06 22:43

Re: Is anyone using a N900 in India?

Its not because of the phone. It is the data transfer technology. With Gprs and Edge you cannot have simultaneous data and voice connections. But with 3G you can have both simultaneously.

Re: Is anyone using a N900 in India?

yes sachin.. i guess most of us here know that..lemme explain d bug more clearly..usually when u r on gprs n a call comes in btw the gprs connection is temporarily suspended (u see a red line across the gprs icon) so that u can recieve the call..but as per d bug this is not happening on some handsets..that is, when someone calls ur n900 u dont get d call n d user gets a busy tone..

Yes i know that bug. I used to use the nokia 7710 in India in 2005. It has the same bug. I am not sure if it is specific for phoine or the GPRS network because my friend on iphone 3g also had the same problem when his phone had to switch to gprs in remote areas.

simply having the connection showing wont reject calls. but if you have active data transfer occuring through the gprs connection then you have a problem.

one way for damage control is to activate missed call alerts. then you have a chance to know who all u missed - or rather who all missed you. messgaes manage to come in when the connection is idle.

Vodafone India is a pity-full company.

the sooner we get to change networks without losing the number the better!

Yes people , since edge is active all the time ... therefore calls r getting missed because of active connection but thats operator dependent bug not a handset dependent bug....

Exactly vodafone india sucks....i used nokia messaging for 30 days and the subscription expired. i called nokia how to activate this back i was ready to pay for this but they said nokia messaging is not supported on vodafone. Only airtel in mumbai supports it. What a pitty....when no interoperability comes i am moving to airtel or ny other good provider.
