In my experience it can quickly take up to 14 days before getting a phone back from Nokia service shop, and now in the middle of new year (happy new year by the way), would rather just live with it for now and maybe get it replaced where I got it from i january, or a walk in service shop when/if the problem gets recognized by Nokia.

Anyway please do share your reply, maybe Nokia in the UK will be more helpful :).

Emailed Nokia, have not received a response yet. This is really frustrating and if I manage to get a replacement, whose to say I won't receive get more troubled pixels? Argh, when will this nightmare end.

So whats with this Firmware thing ? I had read somewhere that it "could" have something to do with the fw and maby gets away with the new one. Does any of the pre-testers have a stuck pixel ? Is this real or just wishfull thinking ?
I want to give mine back to, but if there would be a chance to fix that by firmware i would test that first. Normaly i would give it back asap, but as i had read here that the replaced N900 had the same or even more pixel errors im not sure anymore. I have one stuck, dont want more ore a lifetime send back :)

I don't see how a firmware update could fix a dead pixel. How is this possible? A dead pixel is a hardware fault I thought and firmware although to do with hardware is actually software...

If I had 1 dead pixel, I would probably keep the device but I have a cluster of 3-4 at the left and a few more elsewhere. Unacceptable.

I received my phone on 31st December.

There is one visible dead pixel towards the bottom-left corner of the screen, or it might be two together but it still isn't very noticeable to me unless I have a dark background and I look very closely at the screen. I think I am willing to tolerate this problem. It is a shame, but this is the first time I have ever owned an lcd screen which has had the problem.

When I really look closely, I can just see one very small dead pixel just above it too - but I would never have noticed this had it not been for the larger one beneath it.

I do wonder if it is a problem common to the N900 though - this thread would appear to confirm that.

As for a software update fixing this problem, I would say that is about as likely as that screen flashing utility fixing it (although I must admit I tried it out of curiousity).

I haven't any dead pixel on my device (it's a device from the first shipment in france in november)
And as far as I know on the main french forum about N900, only one user with dead pixel in a thread of 6800+ posts !

Seems to be a common problem here, with almost 40 members having troubled pixels. Nokia still haven't gotten back to me yet...

A user on the NokiaUsers forum took a screenshot and the "dead pixel" appeared in it. I said it was fake at first then another user pointed out that nokia reported it's a software problem not a hardware one.
The ones you're having might be real dead pixels, but there's a chance that they're fixed in a firmware update.

Well "dead" means black. I only got a white one so that means "stuck". On the web, flashing the opposite color and sending a strong input to the screen is claimed to be a solution.
So maybe on the next fw update some more juice will be sent to the screen to shake those pixels up.

Even if you have a dark pixel it might be stuck on black; actual dead pixels are something very rare these days.

I've ran a video thats suppose to cure this problem but it didn't help. It did however turn one of my pixels red.

I thought I would post another picture of a different area of my screen where I am seeing 'dead' pixels. In the first photo I have circled the area red in which I will zoom in the next picture.

The blue circles are sources of light which I cannot see with my eyes but are being picked up by the camera. These tiny light sources are all over the screen with suggests the area between the pixels has been poorly sealed.

You may need to adjust your monitors brightness to full to see the first picture properly.

http://users.adam.com.au/danielw/N900/az.jpg

Again the light source does not appear to be one of the pixels but rather some light leaking from behind the lcd panel between the pixels. Does anyone else agree?

Can someone else please take some pictures of their suspect pixels as I'd love to compare them.

I have 1 stuck pixel (appears only in dark backgrounds) and I have been running the LCD Screen Fix website for days and till now its still there! :(

m0par 2010-01-03 16:42

My first n900 had alot of dead pixels

My first n900 had a single pixel dead/stuck (not sure of the correct terminology -- it was always white) in one corner and a large blob of at least 8 right smack dab in the middle of the screen.

It also had a severe reboot issue.

Luckily, the replacement doesn't have a single problem pixel, nor have I experienced any spontaneous reboots (knock on wood).

Even if you have a dark pixel it might be stuck on black; actual dead pixels are something very rare these days.

A dead pixel is a full pixel, that is all 3 sub-pixels, that doesn't work - be it always on or always off (depends on the screen's default state, there are screens which doesn't block the light by default). There is a further classification of dead pixels by dead sub-pixels - when one or more of the sub-pixels doesn't work properly (so it appears to show a light of some color / doesn't show some color). Stuck pixels refer to the later problem in most cases, but those are curable by rapid screen flashing - if a sub-pixel is really dead, there is no utility that can fix it, if it's stuck it would fix itself within a dozen of minutes, so if screen flashing videos / utilities doesn't fix it in 10-20 minutes, it's safe to assume that it's not stuck but dead indeed.

However, sometime it's not the screen that is faulty, but the software - for example there might be a problem with framebuffer rendering some of the pixels badly or screen driver might acting up - in that case a firmware update might be a viable solution. Framebuffer problems are easily diagnosed by taking a screenshot on the device - if the screenshot have dead/weird pixels, it's safe to assume that the screen is working properly but the software is acting up. It's a bit more complicated if the screen driver makes the problem, tho... Either way, if that is a problem, a firmware update might be able to fix it.

Actual dead pixels/sub-pixels are as common as they were couple of years ago, actually they are even more common these days as miniaturization poses further manufacturing difficulties - they are just not as visible as they were when you had 800x600 resolution on a 17" screen.

My N900 is going back now, i have enough :(
I put a drop of water on my invisible shield where the pixel is to magnify it, and i saw that it is a lot more than one :( The pixels are more then two or three in the same row, it looks like -. Hopefully i get a new device ....... in a few weeks :( :(

I will ask again, how can I printscreen on the n900?

There is a key combination shortcut I believe, see manual and then there's the very handy load-applet that you can install; it's very useful in my opinion.

you can also take a snap of your screen if you oress on the battery- then press the camera then you have 20 secs to press the camera shoot button- the file will be in images..

Thanks, printscreens were found in the images folder like you said. I transfered these over to my PC and I can confirm, the white pixels are NOT present on the screenshots. Does this mean software cannot fix this? It's a hardware issue?

Anyone contacted Nokia UK recently? They still haven't gotten back to me.

ok guys, I have managed to create small python script that will endlessly switch between black, red, green, blue and white.
here is the script:
Code:

import sys, pygame, random, time
pygame.init()

size = width, height = 800, 480
speed = [2, 2]
colors = [ [255,255,255], [0,0,0], [255,0,0], [0,255,0], [0,0,255] ]
screen = pygame.display.set_mode(size)
pygame.display.toggle_fullscreen()
pygame.mouse.set_visible(0);
while 1:
    for event in pygame.event.get():
        if event.type == pygame.QUIT: sys.exit()
    time.sleep(0.001)
    screen.fill(colors[random.randint(0,3)])
    pygame.display.flip()

just one thing I miss - how to disable screensaver?
or there might be someone who will optimize the script, as this is my first python app(I prefer other langs)

I just use this http://www.topflashers.com/etc/screenfix/ no need to mess around with Python scripts. The link above is full screen and displays all kinds of colours and a variety of flashing speeds.

It didn't help my screen though.

No worries, thanks for trying anyways :).

I think I am pretty confident that I don't have any dead pixels on my screen but rather light leakage from behind the panel. If I had a stuck pixel it would be illuminating like the ones in the picture but the red source of light has to be coming from behind the panel.
