Re: Bright spot or spots on display / LCD
It seems to be a reasonably common problem that can happen early in the life of the display, so I'll probably only bother getting it fixed the day before I sell it!

Re: Bright spot or spots on display / LCD
i noticed a bright spot a few days ago & thought it was my imagination. then thought it would just go away. now after reading all these posts, i can't stop noticing it!
my screen used to click when pressing the bottom middle area, then came right. also the metal surround around the screen sort of 'bowed' for awhile so if i pressed the bottom upwards there was some travel. i pressed really hard on all sides and that fixed it (for now) lastly when i press the bottom row of keys the keyboard creaks. again, its the surround which is plastic in this case i also had a dream last night the letters were rubbing off the keyboard. but i guess that doesn't count. bit worried about the long term prospects of this phone. hope it survives past the warranty period! shame nokia... |

Re: Bright spot or spots on display / LCD
1 or 2 doesnt matter ... but get the replacement if number goes out of fingers ... btw according manufacturing standards , "its common to have few dead pixels on the screen in its early stage ...."

the bright spots are life. if you are unable to comply the rules and conditions in your country, you should not make 600eur investments at all. electronic devices have always some rate for defect units and it is impossible to separate every broken one unless the price is tenfold and delivery time 3 months more. so don't hate the player, hate the game. |

Re: Bright spot or spots on display / LCD
Damn I also have two great big white blotches on my screen.
Woah still over 1 1/2 years to go!! |
Re: Bright spot or spots on display / LCD
Me too.. Damn!
Somebody should make a pool for this, I would do it but I'm too afraid of moderators :p |
Re: Bright spot or spots on display / LCD
I got a quite grey spot and brighter spot too but I'm sure it is just the pressurised screen when assembled
|
Re: Bright spot or spots on display / LCD
i conduct a "deadpixel" test on my n900 using the awesome healthcheck app. i saw one, but after reboot, it was gone
|
Re: Bright spot or spots on display / LCD
i too have two bright spots! i though it was something i unknowingly caused.
|
Re: Bright spot or spots on display / LCD
I've got the dual bright spots as well.
|
Re: Bright spot or spots on display / LCD
I've got a spot too I think. Thought it was where the bulb for the backlight is or something, until I saw this thread. Mine is right in middle of display, and only visible in vertain lighting conditions. Even then it's hardly noticeable really, which is why I thought it's kinda supposed to be there, lighting the screen.Guess it's not then?

Re: Bright spot or spots on display / LCD
damn,i have 2 of them in the center.pretty anoying.unfortunetly there is no warranty for n900 in iran so i cant do anything about it.
damn i shouldant have read this post |
Re: Bright spot or spots on display / LCD
I've had one on my N900 for a while now, and it looks like another one is forming as well.. this sucks.
It's an issue that can affect LCD displays of various types/designs -- I'm not sure if anyone else remembers, but this was a problem that plagued Apple G4 Powerbooks back in 2004 and eventually got to the point where they issued a repair (aka recall) program for the models affected. I had one they repaired, and it had about 18 spots on the display of different sizes. It was ridiculous. This is EXACTLY the same thing. |
Re: Bright spot or spots on display / LCD
I also have this, but I don't really care. For those who wonder what the problem is, here's a picture. The spots are much more obvious in real life than on the picture and clearly visible on a bright/white background. They are however invisible on dark or varying background.
http://stuff.moritzg.ch/DSC00035.JPG But I am sure not going to send it in for something like this. Can't be bothered to waste time on such a matter... |
Re: Bright spot or spots on display / LCD
Yeah, I have exactly the same sopt, only on on the right top corner. Reflashing didn't help. It doesn't quite disturb me, but I just wonder why this is?
|
Re: Bright spot or spots on display / LCD
It's not a software problem. I have the same problem with my old Fujitsu laptop as well. The problem is that the backlight is a bit brighter in some places. You'll notice the problem when looking a completely white background. I just sent my N900 for repairs cause of this same problem.

Re: Bright spot or spots on display / LCD
I had the dual bright spots. Nokia Care Point replaced the whole unit.

I have the real same thing and i explained it to Nokia over the phone and send it in for a repair. Just got my phone back and they have NOT fixed. I am going to call in on Monday again. Any tips what i should insist on? |
Re: Bright spot or spots on display / LCD
Exact same problem here, two small bright spots. One almost at the center, another about 2cm to the right. There's an area between those spots where pressure sensitivity is noticeably higher. Found out when I updated to 1.2 and used Mypaint.
Thought it was my own fault (pressing the screen too hard or something), but after reading these experiences, I'm not so sure. |
Re: Bright spot or spots on display / LCD
Got my N900 barely used second hand (Seller said it was in perfect condition - it wasn't, but it was close enough that I didn't mind), and I had two of these spots in the screen from the get-go. Actually, it may have been just one at first followed by a second sometime soon after. I haven't really been bothered by them though.
nokiauser14: I'd recommend insisting on a replacement device if it's a problem. Or having them replace the LCD screen with a new one. Because the problem is hardware-linked, and since it's physically in the screen itself that's pretty much the only way you'd get rid of it. |
Re: Bright spot or spots on display / LCD
One more reason to get iPHONE 4.0 with the NEW retinal display...LOL and don't have to deal with this crap.
|
Re: Bright spot or spots on display / LCD
I have the same display issue. It's not THAT bad.
Seems like a pressure spot, it's probably not, but looks like something is pushing from behind. I only have one or two. It's not that bad. If it goes too far and ruins my screen, I will probably just replace the LCD. This phone/NiT has many, many issues but... LOOK AT IT! IT'S GREAT! |
Re: Bright spot or spots on display / LCD
Concurred with kingoddball. Honestly, I've been using my N900 from day one with this problem, and honestly, it never bothered me. It's certainly not enough to make me jump ship to the iPhone 4 or whatever else the next new shiny thing will be, when the N900 is practically the god of phones in terms of versatility right now.

Re: Bright spot or spots on display / LCD
It falls within the nokia warrenty and can be demanded for a repair.
The person i spoke from the nokia care center told me it mostly has to do with water damage. The n96 also had this problem allot he said. Something i didn't know is that every nokia has a water indicator on it. wich makes it possible for nokia to see wether or not a phone has had water damage in the past. the guy there told me that. If i were you, and your n900 has not had water damage, i would bring the n900 in for repair. It didnt bother me in the first place but it looked like it became worse, and i started to anoy the fact that my 600 dollar device didn't have a descent screen. |

Could it be that some things "melt" behind the screen? |
Re: Bright spot or spots on display / LCD
I dont think so. most people i know, who have this problem, have this from the day they bought it... at that point there wasnt even an overclock option yet. Second of all the screen has an iron plated back panel and space between, the CPU and chips are on the bottom part of the phone (behind the keyboard) so would be very strange if that was the problem.
I think its an error in the production process. witch the back layer ist fully atached to the screen and gives some kind of bubbles between, wich gives a strange white spot when backlight shines at it. Mine had 2 spots and 5 dead pixels in a row. I think mine was built on a monday morning. |
Re: Bright spot or spots on display / LCD
got the two lower spots on my display as well. they don't bother me but I'm curious to their origin as well
|
Re: Bright spot or spots on display / LCD
Have the exact same issue. I only noticed these spots couple of weeks ago, when played Beneath a Steel Sky under ScummVM due to a lot of pixel hunting involved. Not sure if the spots were there before.
They're unnoticeable enough, so I forget about them from time to time. Still not great they are here, but I can live with it. |
Re: Bright spot or spots on display / LCD
I have this too, and I haven't had any water damage
|
Re: Bright spot or spots on display / LCD
So its seems like a bigger problem then everyone is saying. i think the problem of it not officially recognised by nokia is due to the very few people who actually turn their n900's in for repair.
As i understand from this thread lots of people dont care that their 600 dollar device's screen falls apart. I can also confirm that heat makes the issue worse. i think what you see is an air bubble that when heated gets bigger wich makes the visibility of it worse. I just want it to be fixed! i think its not supposed to be there. Nokia needs to make good quality screens! not one that falls apart in the device. I also think its ridiculous that nokia writes in its manual that dead pixels are never a warranty issue. i have 5 on the middle of the screen. and they are very anoying. I think a screen needs to be perfect 100% because thats where everything happens. ever watched a movie on the n900 with a row of dead pixels? well it annoys me allot! |
Re: Bright spot or spots on display / LCD
i have a white spot on my screen aswel.
|
Re: Bright spot or spots on display / LCD
I've also got the two lower spots. Up until now I thought I had accidentally hit the screen with something but I guess not. No water damage, no overclocking or heating issues - just those two spots.
