Re: Extra Decoders Support for the N900

Interesting, if anyone else is having installation issues, please refresh your Application Manager catalogues list, maybe not all of the dependencies got pulled into Extras, which should have happened automatically.

Anyway, I've set up a little PayPal page, where you can support the project. I've also updated the Troubleshooting page and the main project page with this information. If you like what you are getting, consider donating :)

if i click "update" it tells me there is a new version available, but if i agree to install it immediately gives the error message quoted by the guy above.

Which version of Maemo 5 are you using, PR1.0 or PR1.1?

Also, make sure you have the Nokia Applications catalogue enabled.

can developer of this extra decoder take a look what kind of codec is used in this podcast http://iax.podomatic.com/enclosure/2...8_49-08_00.m4a
Last 2 podcasts from that source are not playing in mediaplayer, but work in kmplayer with osso.

Thank you

i have installed all the updates that have come out, and i am sure i have installed 1.1 in particular.

the app manager shows several different repos (not devel or testing), and i have installed and uninstalled apps with no problem up till now.

other than seeing a load of repo's, and in the absence of a big "OFF" button when you click the top panel of the app manager........ how do you check whether the NA catalogue is enabled? :)

If it's greyed out in the repo list then it's disabled, and if there's a big red cross next to it then it failed to update. Otherwise, if it's in the list then it's enabled.

Re: Extra Decoders Support for the N900

@Tomaszd,

I've been playing around with a number of Real Audio files and found out that:

1. As you previously mentioned, there are no problems in playing downloaded real audio files (.ra). They can be opened in Media Player directly from the browser. The only minor issue is that Media Player doesn't read metadata such as the title of the track. Can you confirm this is a bug?

2. As per streaming files (either live or archived), no luck in playing them via Media Player. I can't recreate my original setup (with PR1.01 and Extra Decoders 0.3), but I know for sure I could play some .rm streams then. It would be great to rectify this, but I don't have other useful information.

3. However, I have found a way to play streaming audio with mplayer: all you need to do is select either mplayer or npp as player, and the files will eventually play (slow buffering). The same files would not work with osso.

4. I think I've spotted a bug in Extra Decoders though. If Extra Decoders is installed and I click on the url of a real audio stream in the browser, I am prompted with the option of opening the stream in KMplayer. When doing so, however, the url doesn't get ported to KMplayer properly and the operation fails.

Example:

type in the browser: http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio/listen/live/r1.ram

If you the choose to open the file in KMplayer, KMplayer will then attempt to open the following location: "/var/tmp/r1.ram" and obviously fail. The same happens if you try to save the link to the device and then open it from File Manager with KMplayer. The file will instead stream with no problem if one types the full url above directly in KMplayer.

Should I create a bug for this in bugzilla?

Thanks!

Re: Extra Decoders Support for the N900

Hello, thanks for the OGG decoders support.
I am having a battery drain issue when playing ogg files, not sure if this is normal. I get CPU utilization of 30-50% and the N900 gets warm. The battery starts draining fairly fast.

With regular mp3s on the default media player, or with mplayer playing ogg files, the CPU utilization is around 10%.

Any idea what's going on or how to fix it?

Thanks

**EDIT** Just tried Flac as well, and I get CPU <10% while playing.

Does anyone know if we can somehow play WMV Microsoft Streaming Music Format on the N900?

I installed the extra decoders per this thread but wasn't able to play WMV Microsoft Streaming Format files. I am trying to play the following:

Please chime in with any thoughts or ideas, thanks!

Hi all,

I've installed the extra decoders app, and I can see now in my file manager that my FLV files are now associated with my media player icon. However why don't they show up in my videos in the media player application?

Thanks
Chris

I installed the Extra Decoder Support package and could no longer play mp3 files in the standard Media Player - is this known/expected behaviour?

I uninstalled the Extra Decoder Support package and the mp3 files were playable once more.

(This is with 3.2009.02-8)

No, thought I only needed to reboot if I saw no media, did occur I should have tried a reboot after I'd already removed it! Will try re-installing with a reboot tonight.

Thanks for the information, I have done the updates from the N900, and it doesn't indicate any new updates available. why is that ?

[Edit]
I don't know how but somehow it shows me I have available updates to the Firmware.

I'll start updating and inform you

again, thanks for the help

[Edit]
I did the firmware update and everything is working perfectly.

just wondering if anything above h264 baseline is being worked on, as mplayer plays some videos i have at 90% speed (which isn't quite there) so I am pretty confident about this one going all the way once supported.

Re: Extra Decoders Support for the N900

With mplayer and extra codecs installed, i tried a little experiment:

WMV 720p - plays, sound is great, video is pretty slow
MOV 720p - nope
AVI 720p - plays first seconds, then stops
MP4 720p - plays, sound is great, video is pretty slow
MP4 1080p - plays first seconds, then stops
MKV 720x576, Dual Audio, 3 Subtitles - plays, sound is great, video is pretty slow

I think the N900 is capable of playing 720p videos or mkv videos without bigger problems, but the software for it needs to be tweaked (since it's not officialy supported yet).

Can you tell us what codecs were actually used for the videos, rather than what containers they were in? They'll be far more likely to make a difference to playback performance.

Re: Extra Decoders Support for the N900

Sure:
WMV 720p: WMV9 video codec - 3300 kb/s, WMA audio codec - 192 kb/s
MOV 720p: AVC1 video codec - 5700 kb/s, AAC audio codec - 128 kb/s
AVI 720p: XVID MPEG-4 video codec - 4700 kb/s, PCM audio codec - 1411 kb/s
MP4 720p: AVC1 video codec - 3300 kb/s, AAC audio - 128 kb/s
MP4 1080p: AVC1 video codec - 3700 kb/s, AAC audio - 128 kb/s
MKV (720x480): AVC1 video codec - 1600 kb/s, 2 AAC audio tracks, 2 *** subtitle tracks

It's not a problem at all, i'm actually impressed with the N900 - plays regular xvid, divx, wmv, mpeg2, youtube mp4 files no problemo... i just though i'd do some tests :D

Re: Extra Decoders Support for the N900

Which player did you use to play that? And if kmplayer, which backend was kmplayer set to use?

I'd think the last mkv file in your list would be playable under the standad mediaplayer / mafw

Vote for bug 8165 - https://bugs.maemo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=8165

You got exactly that problem - gst-video-thumbnailred locks video accelerator. Even video from backside camera is not played.

Temporary workaround: Install KMPlayer and use it. But before use just verify that gst-video-thumbnailred was not started by standard system media player - don't use a standard system media player. Or go to X-Term shell and execute a command

killall gst-video-thumbnailerd

It can temporary unlock your video accelerator.

Seeing as how the N900 can't display or output close to 720p these kinds of tests are a waste of time. the device will only be scaling the video down and this looses quality; thus nullifying the point of the exercise.

pillar 2010-03-08 10:42

Re: Extra Decoders Support for the N900

I strongly disagree with cashclientel. Even though N900 cannot display 720p and will have to downscale the video, it would be very beneficial to be able to play these videos. For me the difference of using a mobile device as a media player is whether there is a need of re-encoding or not. If the videos play as they are, the device will be used - otherwise not.

Touché pillar - although Jack6428's test did prove what we already knew - the N900 can't play any HD content.

Because it's not supported at the moment by the OS (software). The hardware can do it with ease. At least mplayer manages to start playing the files, unlike the default player which shouts "unsupported format". Give it time, sooner or later it will work. It's a miracle it actually can play most of the formats without the need for re-encoding out of the box. HD is just another ballgame.
