Re: Removing unnecessary files on N810

ok; the theme removal project is complete. I picked up just under 3 mb from that. I am now down to 197 mb of used space so we are making headway.
fyi: I went ahead and uninstalled Fennec this morning which was around 30 mb alone.

I am poking around working on using terminal commands to get familiar with the structure.

gerbick: how about tackling some of those language files of apps that I obviously wont use. Didn't you say somewhere that one of those help file folders had about 10 mb of readme and such?

thanks again guys...

Re: Removing unnecessary files on N810

Forgive me if I'm overlooking your question in any way; but I'm not sure what you mean in your question. Do you mean language files past the prior post where I stated:

Quote:

cd /usr/share/common-licenses
rm *

cd /usr/share/doc
rm *

cd /usr/share/gtk-doc
rm * -r

cd /usr/share/info
rm *

cd /usr/share/keyboards

note: I remove all but: en_US.vkb, latin.special.vkb and en_GB.vkb

cd /usr/share/locale/

note: I remove all but: en@boldquot, en_CA, en_GB, en@quot, and en_US

cd /usr/share/osso-help

note: I remove all but: en_US, en_GB and graphics here
Where the language files are all located in the /usr/share/locale location and you'll delete all but the en@boldquot, en_CA, en_GB, en@quot, and en_US folders.

Just making sure before I mess up on giving an answer that might be wrong or not what you're asking. Hope you understand; I'd rather err on the side of caution.

Ah, so now you can install Putty and basically have a window of your tablet on your pc where you run terminal commands. It's great fun and very convenient if you are doing stuff in there for a long period of time

Re: Removing unnecessary files on N810

Installed the approx 35 apps that I consider 'essential' to how I use the tablet.
With all repos active I am at 80Mb free which is actually very good for me. I'll do some of the cleanup steps gerbick suggested here and after that, for me, a full re-install then finishes with;
- replacing the Nokia pedo-start up image,
- changing some microB settings like cache size, etc, and
- disabling meta-crawler(once I've tracked down the command for that - again :) ).

Is it wrong that cleaning up your device is actually kinda fun...?

update-rc.d metalayer-crawler remove

That will remove the metalayer-crawler from starting up. That's the proper method. Per each update on the Community SSU though, I had to run that.

Here's a killer thread about optimizing the kernel and Microb

A lot of those tweaks, I also run. Those are the things I've not folded into my guide.

Thanks for the metalayer command. I QuickClipped it into my "N810 Tricks" document for future use and safekeeping.

I've seen Brontide's post in the past and I believe that's where I got some of my microB tweaks from (like the cache increase). It's good read though even though I comprehend 10% of it all on a good day.

cd /usr/share/osso-help

Any idea how much memory I will gain back on removing all but the above on these?

I guess I am wanting to start where I can get the most space back first...

thx

Also, is there a command (or group of commands) that can do a batch remove with exceptions? IE; all but the US English and British files...

Re: Removing unnecessary files on N810

Also, what is up with the possibility of removing the game files and such that ship with the device?

Any possibility of removing the default PDF viewer or other default apps that I have replaced with 3rd party versions?

THANKS AGAIN GUYS!!!!

REALLY APPRECIATE THE HELP.

Re: Removing unnecessary files on N810

The game files are very small. The osso-help files, that's about 1-1.5mb or so IIRC. All of the README files are about 100k total combined space recovered.

The themes, backgrounds, disabling Extras-Devel is about 9-11mb in total.

coosbaytv 2010-05-17 19:13

Re: Removing unnecessary files on N810

just removed extras catalogs and now down to 186 mb used...

I am going to install minefield browser to compare with microb (which I don't use at all).

If I like and keep minefield, is there any way to remove microb?

coosbaytv 2010-05-18 17:41

Re: Removing unnecessary files on N810

couple more questions:

1 I noticed on the help files in the various languages that they are directories. I tried to remove one but it is still there. What is the syntax to remove the French language help file for example?

2 Gerbick: you mentioned that removing help files should gain 1 to 1.5 mb...Is this in total or for each language directory?

Also, I didn't hear back on the possibility of removing default apps like the pdf reader or MicroB for instance...

thx

gerbick 2010-05-18 20:02

Re: Removing unnecessary files on N810

I've not gotten into the practice of removing default apps; mainly because they tend to be rather small or in the case of modest; rather deeply entrenched. There are some prior threads about removing those apps, but I've always - in the case of PDF Reader for instance - ran into a situation where I needed to open with (such and such) application and the symlinks fail me in an instance or two.

Your luck/mileage may vary on that. I just decided a while back the standard apps don't annoy me that much - all but Microb. Would love to be able to kill browserd; but I've yet to find a full browser that I like that could replace Microb - Tear is great, but has a couple of shortcomings... and it doesn't seem to be updated any longer.

The osso-help was what I was referring to that would gain that 1 or so mb back. The other language files, since you've not run localepurge && docpurge... you'll have to do one by one... and ultimately combined, you can gain about 5-14mb of space. The instructions... or help files for each program, I tend to destroy because I've never used them. Ever.

Now... what help files in what directories are you referring to? If you're specific, I can answer more clearly.

coosbaytv 2010-05-18 23:08

Re: Removing unnecessary files on N810

I was referring to the osso help being in various languages (which I really only need US English). Each directory is another language and aren't needed.

FYI, I have run both Localepurge and Docpurge. Localepurge gave me back close to 10 MB where I didn't see any gain with Docpurge.

As Far as MicroB, are you aware of how to remove it? I never use it.

I am thinking that if it is possible to remove MicroB, I will try the other Firefox (Mine...whatever) as a potential replacement. I don't even have Tear installed anymore.

With still being at 185 MB of used internal space, I have to believe that there is something I am missing or don't know about to remove. Especially given the list of apps I have installed as opposed to the amount of install space they take up...the math just doesn't add up :(

thx

Re: Removing unnecessary files on N810

Have you visited /home/user and used the ls -a command there?

You might have a ton of left over files and folders (they all start with a period) from prior apps, now removed, in there.

You've gone from less than 10mb left over to about 70mb. 30mb of which was one program. I'd call that progress.

And no. I do not know how to remove microb. I've never seen a successful removal; but I know it probably can be done. I just wouldn't consider it personally.

Re: Removing unnecessary files on N810

gerbick; thanks for the home directory! There is all kinds of stuff from uninstalled programs; Tear for one. So now the question is how do I get rid of it? I think this is where the issue is...

As far as progress is concerned, I'm happy with the results but am looking for more. I think you just found the answer to my mystery...

gerbick 2010-05-19 06:01

Re: Removing unnecessary files on N810

It is the same command as the other removals...

rm -r .tear for instance. Always be specific and exact when you're deleting those things.

Re: Removing unnecessary files on N810

Just chiming in to say thanks. This thread helped a hell of a lot. My N810 has been dragging at startup and on basic connections even after doing a bunch of app cleanups. I just reflashed for the first time in 8 months and it feels good.

Until I read the first two pages I was always wondering how to get rid of all the useless stuff that I never touch. I always got around most of the stuff by installing Rhapsody and Gizmo then uninstalling them.

Now I have a bunch of clean menus for the programs I actually use and a lot of free space for wear leveling! Weeeeeee! :D

Now I just need to figure out how to get rid of some of the games. The only stock one I play is mahjong and that gets old after a while.

EDIT: Just figured it out. They are in /usr/share/applications/hildon
Thanks! :D

How can I get meta-crawler back?

I'm using Scid and it stopped playing sounds so I figured it might have something to do with that.

Thanks.

Re: Removing unnecessary files on N810

hey Addison: was wanting to ask you (slightly off topic)...

if we get a replacement Vmware from Garnet, would you help me through the setup of created my Palm user id and then the directory structure?

I just gave up on it before as I really didn't understand anything in the terminal but thanks to this thread and these folks, I am starting to get a little of it.

Not to mention, now that sooooo many thangs have changed for our n810s recently I cannot even think about getting rid of it!

thx

I personally doubt that's your problem - if it were, then all sounds would fail - but I believe the command in Linux is:

update-rc.d metalayer-crawler defaults

You might have to either pull a start, or simply enough pull a reboot and then use top to make sure it's started with the proper priority.

When the time comes, sure, I'd like to help.

Fair warning though, I've got probably the most unique and complicated setup than anyone else I've seen posting here so far.

If we get the next update, I wanted to go back through anyway since it takes 45 seconds to only fire up an 8 meg gvm.store but with an 800 meg virtual storage card. I need to cut out many of the repeating med apps I have.

I don't get much time to get on these forums like I use to, but I'll definitely make it a point once we get an updated Garnet VM. :)

Tear web browser squibbed on me and reset the tablet itself.

I've now got that metalayer-crawler thingy running again and I'm hearing sound also.

I've got such a stupid love/hate thing for this Scid app. How can I remove it all from the tablet?

This is what I entered into Xterm to have it installed:

root
apt-get install libvorbisenc2
cd /media/mmc1/Scid
dpkg -i tcl8.5_8.5.8-1_armel.deb
dpkg -i tk8.5_8.5.8-1_armel.deb
dpkg -i libsnack2-alsa_2.2.10-dfsg1-9_armel.deb
dpkg -i libtk-img_1.3-release-8_armel.deb
dpkg -i scid_4.0-maemo2_armel.deb

Thanks Gerb!

gerbick 2010-05-25 05:32

Re: Removing unnecessary files on N810

dpkg -r scid_4.0-maemo2_armel should get it all for you.

I'm not sure about the dependencies though, just don't pull a --force ever.

Re: Removing unnecessary files on N810

You can also copy large libraries / executables or other files on the mmc1 or mmc2 and then symlinking to it which saves precious main storage.

Just found this thread while looking through the last couple of years posts. Has anyone found anymore ways of saving space? I read on another thread about linking programs stored on MMC2, has anyone other than Kroll tried this?

I'm cutting more stuff from my N810 than the government can on public services!
