Re: Secret Exit to release games for N900

Is there any indication on when we might start seeing some of these games released on the N900? If so, posting that information on the original post might be helpful to anyone who stumbles on this thread and is interested in following the development (without following all of the individual posts in a huge multi-page thread)

Re: Secret Exit to release games for N900

Is it possible to tell when we can except to see the first demo or the like? Since Zen Bound was showcased in MWC '10 I guess it can't be that far off... or are you waiting for Ovi Store to support paid apps (which may be present in PR1.2)?

Anyway, it's nice to have your support! ;)

Frand 2010-02-21 19:06

Re: Secret Exit to release games for N900

Things are still very much in flux, and the games are going through QA cycles. Obviously support for paid apps is important for us since we intend to sell our games :)

So we're still in a situation where it's too early to bang the drums about any particular dates.

Just let me purchase a .deb file with hardcoded encrypted IMEI with paypal... We don't need ovi store (:

AFAIK No. 30%/70% is for credit cards. With operator billing you get between 50%/50% and 40%/60% depending on item value (see 4.4 of Ovi Publisher Terms & Conditions).
Is it me or are these percentages a bit high?

Frand,

I wonder, it seems Zen Bound uses multitouch on the IPhone,
I am curious to say how you go around that N900 limitation - Which personally I didn't even feel is missing yet (:

Out of personal experience, the multi-touch gestures used in Zen Bound for rotating the object clockwise and counterclockwise aren't used that much in regular gameplay. In fact, I'd be so bold to guess that the majority of the customers have probably never used the feature.

On the N900, the gesture obviously isn't present, but it doesn't hamper the gameplay since the rotation controls allow for the object to be moved clockwise and counterclockwise by simply grabbing the object from its edge and moving from there.

To answer my own question - the answer is that there is near zero professional development interested in the N900, so there's no software coming out anyway.

I was speaking to a friend last night who codes for a living, and he's currently working on the WinMo 7 SDK to get some games developed for launch (in the hope of making a quick buck). I asked him about programming for maemo in the interim and his response was essentially "no ****ing interest".

Re: Secret Exit to release games for N900

@ cashclientel I suspect it's because
  1. They already forked out their fee to Ovi and
  2. They hadn't budgeted for the extra work required to do that, and are waiting and hoping they won't have to (understandably)
.

I sincerely hope heads are rolling on the floor at Ovi. Lots of heads.

There is some ... like me ... but passing the extras testing process is a real pain ... as noone will test your game.

Vectormine for example is a 1Euros shareware game ... this was my first commercial games, and probably the last as trying to put non free applications/games in extras is a pain, as many things aren't working on the packages interface, and elsewhere.

I don't know if the terms changed since I last checked, but the original terms like quarterly payments and a minimum of 500EUR earned (after the Ovi and tax cuts) for payments are not helping either.

Khertan, this has nothing to do with commercial applications in general. The OP just wanted to buy an IMEI locked .deb. You don't need Extras (or any part of maemo.org) for that.

Re: Secret Exit to release games for N900

Potential business idea:

1. Make a catalogue website that can contain N900 software with a function to take payments.
2. Promote the site and fill the void in this sphere (and there is a void). This wouldn't be hard as there is such a hunger for games and apps on this device and you could promote on this forum for free
3. Charge content developers a reasonable margin
4. Completely rout Nokia from the N900 software market

You'd make money and also make a lot of N900 owners happier

But it s quite more difficult as ... not everyone browse maemo.org/download ... and it s quite difficult to advertise as not all people having a n900 are reading talk.

Jani, I wanted to give some feed back about games that might be popular on the N900. Little kids dont own 400.00 to 600.00 dollar phones. So I would like to see FPS that intergrate the xbox 360 controler. Ya will it be hard I can only think to say yes. But that is what people I know and talk to want. If it would be possible to play online as well then that would be a plus. Hit me back if you want some ideas. I dont have the skills but Ideas for days.

I don't believe the market is huge for games which require external accessories.

Re: Secret Exit to release games for N900

Bad news: SPiN came back from submission with a few bugs we need to sort out, so a couple of days to fix the issues, then the regular Ovi QA and hope for approval.

Good news: Zen Bound just passed Ovi QA, which means it should be available on sale as swiftly as the process allows :)

(Since this is the first time for us as well, it's a learning experience to see what kind of time is involved with going from 'QA passed' to 'Published'.)

EDIT: We just got an email the content has been published and should be visible within the next few hours.

after 5 mins of my phone becoming unresponsive it says there isnt enough memory in var/temp. got plenty of disc space and about 80mb of rootfs

Re: Secret Exit to release games for N900

Yes, the installation is very strange - downloads 50mb without showing anything and looks like MicroB freezes the whole phone (don't stop or close it, don't click several times unless something happens). Mine failed the first time but ran apt-get clean and the second time it went through. The game crashed the first time I chose the first level, on second run was okay. Great game, worth every penny.

Frand 2010-06-16 20:08

Re: Secret Exit to release games for N900

As far as rocky starts go, it's at least encouraging to hear that the game is running fine on the second run.

Still, it's worrisome to hear the kind of different behaviors are now happening, considering the game really has gone through a number of QA stages on a number of different devices.

Please keep reporting any glitches. We'll be monitoring this thread.

If anyone can report a smooth process from installing to running, it would of course be much appreciated as well :)
