Hmm. I disabled history and it started to work. I got my own messages and my contacts messages once in awhile back to me. Still n900 remembers chat history so i´m not quite sure what history setting in account preferences does.

BUT when I restart the N900 and sign in again, duplicates of all the fb online contacts (including those that I merged earlier) appear again...

The facebook chat plugin seems to match up your contacts to facebook by use of the Nickname field. If you merge two contacts, keep the nickname that was created by the facebook chat plugin, and this will then work okay.

Isn't that just plain wrong? Isn't there an X-FACEBOOK field?

If two or more protocols match on the nickname field, houston's got a problem.

Re: IM Protocol Plugins v0.8 release - Facebook Chat!

I'm guessing extra contacts will appear again if a person changes their name too, since it'll pick up another "Nickname".

But like zerojay said earlier, it is a first release.

Great stuff. Now I only wish I didn't have 1000+ "friends" on fb....already got 60 new entries in my contact list...
Would it be possible to filter contacts that are added to the contacts by group info or something?

Is it possible to not automatically load/create contacts when you connect with one of the services (e.g. Facebook, MSN etc)? Instead, I would like to manually enter the contact details for the people who I'm interested in having on my N900.

Re: IM Protocol Plugins v0.8 release - Facebook Chat!

Great news but i'll skip it until it's bug free. After couple of nightmares with MSN on N900, i said myself not to try something like that again. :)

how to free space in var/cache/apt/archives?? i install the im protocol and tried apt-get update and apt-get upgrade it says you dont have enough free space in var/cache/apt/archives.

Re: IM Protocol Plugins v0.8 release - Facebook Chat!

I uninstalled MSN pecan rc3, and installed MSN Conversation 0.8. It works. When I look to the contact details, I see MSN IM field. When I edit the contact, I found two MSN fields!!

how come?

I can't get Yahoo working on version 0.7 of this. When I go to create an account and sign in it just does nothing.

Do I need to specify the @yahoo.co.uk in the username? Although I have tried it with and without, neither worked.

Re: IM Protocol Plugins v0.8 release - Facebook Chat!

MSN, Yahoo and Facebook all work perfectly for me in 0.8. There is some weirdness with some double delivery of facebook chat items but mostly it works well.

So what is the best MSN plugin in these days?

MSN pecan rc3 is broken!!

MSN Haze (under Pidgin protocols plugin for Conversations & Contacts) and MSN IM (under MSN Conversation & Contacts) both work for me but I don't know which one should I pick!!

Don't use MSN pecan rc3

If you install Pidgin protocols plugin for Conversations & Contacts 0.8 it will automatically install all the dependances for you which includes MSN Conversation & Contacts 0.8

When I used Pidgin 0.7, I found that it uses Haze version!! How come Pidgin 0.8 uses MSN butterfly?

Re: IM Protocol Plugins v0.8 release - Facebook Chat!

Two bugs with Facebook chat:

One: At some point my conversation with someone showed all the messages (both mine and his) coming from the person I was talking to. Basically instead of it saying I said something, it said he said it instead.

Two: when you have a chat session open, and you relogin (switched internet source), it acts like your entire conversation was just sent - sending you the alert for every single message.

Re: IM Protocol Plugins v0.8 release - Facebook Chat!

am only thinking if the developer of this plugin actually reading our feedback here or not..if not, is there some place where i can report the 2 bugs so that they can be taken care of in future updates??

I use the facebook nicknames and I still get contacts unmerging.

It's about 50/50 for me... but for some reason the icons are not kept when i logout once I merge a Facebook contact (who has an profil pic) with a contact on my phone (who doesn't have a profile pic).

I know it's a first release, it has 2 annoying bugs but its a good start :)

Facebook plugin need to be fixed urgently before going to Extras

planetf1 2010-02-07 09:51

Re: IM Protocol Plugins v0.8 release - Facebook Chat!

Yes agree, it's great to see plugins like this, but it needs to stay in extras-testing until this issue is addressed. Unfortunately it's in the same package as other components which do work better -- dilemma

I think this is the "vote" and bug reporting page (did I get the right component?)

Anyone got Yahoo working on version 0.7? I have a yahoo.co.uk account and when I try to create the account and click the "Sign in" button, the button becomes disabled but nothing happens. I've tried it a couple of times and always the same issue.

Re: IM Protocol Plugins v0.8 release - Facebook Chat!

I noticed something on the Facebook chat which may just be a lack of a feature rather than a bug. There does not seem to be a way to show as busy unlike on the other accounts. It is either online or offline.

I installed pidgin today and it works great! I CANNOT get sound alerts when an IM is received. Fiddling with sound options did not help. Can this be enabled?

Yahoo did not work for me either in 0.7 - exactly the same issue as you. I just upgraded to 0.8 and now yahoo works perfectly.

Re: IM Protocol Plugins v0.8 release - Facebook Chat!

hi all forum newbie here...ive had the N900's IM client running Skype,MSN and Facebook with minimal problems...most of them have been discussed...im not sure if my facebook issue is related to the web site being recently updated again...all of the others sign in fine apart from FB which constantly displays 'Authentication failed'....i tried adding other FB accounts like my partners and they seem to connect fine...am i right in saying that the N900 stores a FB login cookie which is linked to my account and password in the system cache? if i somehow get rid of this will the device connect again?....ive tried deleting my FB IM account entry from the N900 and reinstalling it and also doing the same with the conversations plugins...also ive tried changing my FB login email but this doesnt work either...any help would be much appreciated:cool:

I find if my screen name is anything other than the email address I use for facebook - it comes up with network error and won't connect to facebook.

also experiencing reloading entire conversations when logging in due to going from wifi to 3g etc, as well as the contact multiple merges (i don't use nicknames on FB)

huge thanks for this plugin
looking forward to see mentioned earlier improvements

one question:
is there a workaround to uk t-mobile issue of blocking facebook chat?
other accounts work flawlessly (skype, gadugadu, ovi)

bald.eagle.one: Did you try facebook chat over xmpp/Jabber? I think this new interface on facebook makes the facebook plugin obsolete.

Re: IM Protocol Plugins v0.8 release - Facebook Chat!

Facebook Chat has launched support for Jabber/XMPP.

Reference Facebook Blog post : http://blog.facebook.com/blog.php?post=297991732130

To get Facebook Chat running on your n900 without ANY extra programs, using only the built in features of a stock n900, follow these instructions:

1. Go to the Settings Menu
2. Go to VoIP and IM accounts
3. Press New
4. Select Jabber
5. Press Register New Account (necessary even if u already have a facebook profile, note that if you don't have a facebook profile i don't know if you can do this)
6. In the 'User Name' field, type in '<facebook-username>@chat.facebook.com' substituting your facebook vanity profile name for <facebook-username> and obviously omitting the single quotes.
7. In the 'Password' field enter your current facebook password, then enter it again in the Verify field
8. Press Advanced Settings
9. In the 'Connect to server' field, type 'chat.facebook.com'
10. Ensure that Port is set to '5222'
11. STUN settings are unneeded, leave default
12. After finishing registration, login with username: <facebook-username>@chat.facebook.com' and your facebook password.

Please note that this will pollute your Address Book with all your facebook contacts so be prepared to clean up.

I was scrolling through the entire thread hoping someone would mention this.. The XMPP support for Facebook is flawless in my opinion. You could also call people over Facebook providing they have a chat client configured (like another n900 XD).
