Does anybody know - is it possible to display progress of e-mail sending/receiving operation (in standard Modest email client)? 'Cuz simply sending one photo taken with standard camera app via email via 3G can really take a while (~1MB) and you don't even know is it really sending something or not

No, sorry. You only see at the menu that the process is still running.
But you could use Conky to see if there is data traffic at your connection. So you're able to see if there is still something ongoing.

Not really the best solution, but thanks anyway! Will use conky and approximate data transfer size (base64 increases size as well)...

Actually, the manual has the full story:

Copy text from a mail message

1. Tap the message at the point from where you want to start copying.
2. Press and hold the shift key, and use the arrow keys to select text.
3. Press ctrl + C to copy the text, and ctrl + V to paste it to another location.

This doesn't work for me (aside from a cursor not showing up after step one): I can't select text with the arrow keys, only directly by dragging on the touchscreen while holding down shift. step one doesn't have any effect whatsoever, the manual's wrong....

The current method could remain as a shortcut, but a toolbar button for toggling, as in all the PDF reades that everyone already knows, would avoid the need for actually requiring people to read the manual. There seems to be space available in the toolbar.

Which could also be used for a few other improvements...
By the way, have any of the e-mail bugs been fixed in PR 1.3?

Re: N900's Email is a Joke - Thunderbird on the N900???

Finally I got an email configuration that works for me, e.g. :

Real push based on IMAP idle
Lightweight - (low power/memory/CPU consumption).
Folders, spell checker, multiple accounts, IMAP, reliability, stability, configurability.
And (unlike modest) sends and receives email reliably (Modest never tells you when it fails)

Here is how it works, in 3-4 easy steps.
In Maemo
Install easy debian.

In easy debian
Install gnubiff and sylpheed.
Configure sylpheed to never check for new emails.
Configure gnubiff to monitor your email (via imap idle) and run sylpheed --receive.

In Maemo, as root.

add a script to /etc/network/if-up.d
"
sudo - u user debbie killall gnubiff
sudo -u user debbie gnubiff -n&
"
Chmod +x script.

add the following line to /etc/sudoers
root ALL=(ALL) ALL

Good luck, it's not as complicated as it looks and works great.
I don't think packaging on top of both easy debian and maemo is worth the effort.

(Thanks Qole, easy debian is what makes this phone worth it).

I've been using Mutt over SSH. As long as my server and I have access to the interwebs then I'm good to go :D

Another email client for Maemo is "Kontact mobile"

Also gpg encryption is supported.

Take a look here: http://userbase.kde.org/Kontact_Touch/Maemo5

or here: http://www.opensource-usability-labs...ublic-testing/

i do not agree that the N900 email is a joke. I have 4 email accounts including an exchange and i never have problems with them. my only question is, can we get spellcheck somehow?

Agreed, but sadly unlikely...

Absolutely agree with this.

I only have one gmail account going through it though. When I did have 1 gmail and 2 hotmail accounts going through it, it did spaz up a little bit. Then I just stuck to using my main gmail account on it only and it's been absolutely flawless;
