Re: [Announce] MStarDict for N900

The file you downloaded are in compressed format. If you are not comfortable with the x-terminal and/or running commands off it; I would suggest you do the following:

1. copy your downloaded file to the PC(assuming you run Windows)
2. get 7-zip or similar to decompress the file at your PC
3. transfer the decompressed file sets back to the N900

good luck

I've downloaded a dictionary, but I can't untar the file - are there any step-by-step instructions? What I've been trying is:

tar -xv stardict-comn_sdict05_eng_eng_main-2.4.2.tar.bz2

but it never does anything.

either do it on your PC or rename the file and remove stardict- and use
Code:

tar -xvjf  new_fname.tar.bz2

Just in case you missed that, you need to download the stardict format and not the XDXF.
On your other post, you seem to have downloaded the correct format.

Hope it's useful.

Re: [Announce] MStarDict for N900

FINALLY!!! I was getting frustrated...anyway my mistakes were that I downloaded them in .xdxf first...WRONG!! then I corrected and dowloaded the stardict but decompressed them with winzin or 7-zip...WRONG!!!
SO...you have to download them in stardict format and WINRAR them!! and there you go...now they work!! yay!!

Re: [Announce] MStarDict for N900

Hello,
thanks guys now it works.

The trick is as follows (implemented on PC)
1 - got to http://xdxf.revdanica.com/down2/
2- select your dictionary
3- slect download format Stardict
4- extract it with WinRAR.
5- some dictionaries have 2 links. e.g. stardict-comn_sdict05_eng_arabic-2.4.2.tar.bz2 and stardict-comn_sdict_axm05_eng_arabic-2.4.2.tar.bz2. in this case select the one with _sdict_axm05
6- copy the 3 files .dz, .idx and .ifo to your N900 mstardict directory

Re: [Announce] MStarDict for N900

I just noticed something weird when using this app. If MStarDict is running, the pulseaudio process is taking 20% CPU all the time (which drains the battery), even if I didn't use the "Speak" button even once. When I quit the app, the pulseaudio process goes to sleep immediately.

Why does a dictionary actively need the sound process? Am I the only one who've got the problem? Should I file a bug for this?

Looks to be happening here as well (though I'd not noticed it before) - probably worth filing a bug anyway.

I have tried these steps, but for some reason, when I go to select a dictionary nothing more then horizontal lines appear (like if it was dividing the different language options). I can select on these empty spaces and a check mark appears, but nothing gets loaded. Any suggestions on what I might be doing wrong?

Downloaded files from the same link the N900 app redirects you to. Made folders for each language, also tried putting the .tar files without extracting and also tried extracting them and putting them in the folder that winzip generates autamatically.

thanks.

Hello,
it sounds awkward.
i dont have much idea. some guesses, is the N900 updated to PR1.2 ?
have you tried to uninstall the mastardict, restart and reinstall it ?
which dictionary are you trying to download, so i can test it?
also you are not supposed to create a folder for every dictionary, files go to mstardict dir.
cheers

am a bit confused...
its just a translation App or does it gives you the meanings of english words like normal dictionary?

It'll do both - it just looks up whatever words you enter in the dictionaries you have loaded. These can be translation dictionaries, or single-language dictionaries.

EDIT: Oh, and you can put question marks in for missing letters to do crossword searches.

Mstardict for the Nokia N900 is driving me mad. I have spent hours trying to make it work. I have finally got a dictionary via my PC and unzipped it using WinZip. Not that it was obvious that I had to do this.I have XDXF file and it still does not work. I have the file in Nokia N900/mstardict but is still does not work.

The reviews are good but I am thinking that this simply is not worth the effort.

sorry but you have to UNRAR the files...it doesnt work if you unzip them.....download unrar and unrar them and then transfer to the folder in the phone...that would do it..

Re: [Announce] MStarDict for N900

FWIW I have both MStardict and QStardict installed and I like QStardict more. Here are 2 pros of QStardict:

In QStardict when typing in a word I can press enter to start the lookup process, with MStardict I have to select from the list.

In QStardict I can double-click to highlight a word in the definition then copy and paste into the word lookup box to do another search, with MStardict it's not possible - I would have to manually type in a new word.

What version of espeak do you have? You can check it with xterm using command:
Code:

apt-cache policy espeak
I have version 1.44.03 and pulseaudio cpu usage is 0.1% with Mstardict. I had same problem also with GPXView and when I upgraded espeak from extras-testing pulseaudio cpu issue was fixed also there.

I previously didn't have any version of espeak installed; when I installed 1.44.03 the problem went away. Maybe espeak should be a dependency of Mstardict?

Thanks for the help. I'm glad to be able to keep it open at all times and still have good battery life.

Re: [Announce] MStarDict for N900

Hy, can anyone tell me how can i load a dictionary ?
I have 2 dictionaries downloaded to the N900/mstardict folder. yet the program doesnt load anydictionaries.

The files are
stardict-comn_sdict05_german_english-2.4.2.tar.bz2
This is stardict format
and
comn_sdict05_ger_eng.tar.bz2
This is XDXF format.

I'm guessing i have to use the stardict format.
Do i have to unpack the archive or what ?

Both XDXF and stardict format are supposed to work, but several people have reported issues with XDXF files. In either case, you'll need to extract them first:
Code:

bunzip2 stardict-comn_sdict05_german_english-2.4.2.tar.bz2
tar xf stardict-comn_sdict05_german_english-2.4.2.tar

2 Attachment(s)
CC-CEDICT in UTF-8, with both traditional and simplified Chinese and Pinyin to English.

Here is my conversation of cedict ,has some problems but at least you are free to try it.
This dictionary is Chinese(Pinyin)-English Only. I made it to myself, because at the moment could be useful for me.
download here
1.Download it to a folder.
2.Unzip and copy to (
Code:

7z x -o stardict-cedict-pinyin.zip /home/user/MyDocs/mstardict
folder. (you need to have installed 7z from extra-dev), or download it on your PC/extract and copy to /mstardict folder in mass storage mode.
3.Choose it from dictionary list.

This dictionary work only with MStarDict! ( for unknown for me reason it does not work with QStarDict )

Why Nokia/Maemo made it so hard for people to install a simple dictionary. I just bought this phone but if it goes like this I will sell it.

You may be missing the bzip2 package - running "dpkg -l bzip2" will show a line starting with "ii" if it's installed. If not, install rootsh via App Manager, then run the following in X Terminal to install it:
Code:

root
apt-get install bzip2

Thanks for MStarDict. The simple full screen size dialogue makes the text very easy to read. One wish, it would more user friendly to add the "Speak" button so that user does not have to tab on the "Translation" on top to call out the "Say" button.

Is there a way to display phonetic symbols correctly?

For now, they don't appear at all. I checked the DICT files and the correct HTML entities are present.

I guess the font used in this app doesn't know about those characters. Is there a way to change it? What fonts can display such characters?

It's a free application, yes, and is available via App Manager, the same as most Maemo software. If you want the source code, that's also available from the repository.
