Actually no. new WM means completely deleting hildon-desktop, 'cause two WM on one tablet — it's such a crazy idea.

That sounds really cool!

I love you smart Russian intellects! :D

If it wasn't for the two million nuclear warheads still pointing at eachother's countries weirdness, I totally could picture you and me kicking it off as friends. *lol*

Re: [Maemo 4] Where Do I download Skippy XD for Nokia N810?

Kroll, In that case I like your mockup (however I think the top bar could use to be smaller, no more than 50 pixles)

Also, I had another idea for improving the diablo UI. Make an applet (either home, task, or statusbar) that would open a panel or window that would show all of the applications installed on the tablet. Basically it would show everything from /usr/share/applications/hildon on one scrolling screen, like maemo 5. However it would order the applications by frequency of use. The idea would be that each time a user clicks on an application in the menu it would keep a note that that application was used one more time. so it would sort them by the number of times used. Applications never used (like "help") would appear at the end while ones you used more often at the beginning. (I'm not sure if the maemo 5 menu does the ordering, iv never used it)

If there is interest I would like to develop this application. I am a long time maemo user but I have never developed for it. I am a php developer but I am learning python. If there is any interest and anybody would like to help me please let me know!

Hi all, now you can get telescope 0.2 from extras-devel, or take .deb-file from garage page

Actually it probably will be a part of Telescope... How did you find our idea? =)

Thanks for comments. I think we have to make a tunable bar (size and ability to turn it off)

Hey Kroll.

Do you know what the command line is for changing the hildon background desktop image?

Kroll 2010-04-17 20:54

Re: [Maemo 4] Where Do I download Skippy XD for Nokia N810?

Nope.
But you can edit /home/user/.osso/hildon-desktop/home-background.conf.
If your wallpaper placed in /usr/share/backgrounds — CachedAs would be empty. If not — CacheAs would be with location of cached image.
Telescope use only BackgroundImage value, but in the next vesion it will use both, BackgroundImage and CacheAs.

Hey Kroll:

I installed Telescope on my n810 but it doesn't show up in the list of programs anywhere.
Where do I run it from as well as configure it to be set up like yours?

coosbaytv 2010-04-17 21:45

Re: [Maemo 4] Where Do I download Skippy XD for Nokia N810?

ok, figured out that you have to run programs first to have it show up...

how do you set up the desktop to look like yours?

Kroll 2010-04-18 06:20

Re: [Maemo 4] Where Do I download Skippy XD for Nokia N810?

Hey!
We didn't done the GUI for configuration so you have to edit /etc/telescope.conf:
scrolling.enabled
background.filename
header.left.filename
header.right.filename
header.middle.filename
border.color
border.width
text.leftMargin
text.rightMargin
closeButton.xSpan
closeButton.ySpan
text.font.size
text.yOffset

That's all confs for now.
You will able to configure the decorator as soon as Telescope will not use the images to draw decorator.

Re: [Maemo 4] Where Do I download Skippy XD for Nokia N810?

Is there any benefit in running both telescope and skippy-x and/or would their be any conflict in function if both were installed?

One of the things I haven't figured out how to do is to launch the telescope app manager in any way apart from clicking the upper hardware key on the side of the N810.
I would love to launch telescope simply by clicking on an empty space on the desktop (just like I 'close' the app manager and returning to the desktop). Maybe I could use skippy-x to define a gesture that would work on the desktop to launch telescope..or is there an easier solution?

sondjata 2010-04-21 14:33

Re: [Maemo 4] Where Do I download Skippy XD for Nokia N810?

I uninstalled skippy. I don't see the benefit of having both on and really I think there would be a conflict. I don't think it a good idea to have skippy activate by clicking on the screen.

Do you know if 'gestures' are supported in telescope? I would personally like to launch the telescope app manager via a gesture on the desktop screen for instance. :)

Btw, telescope is really looking fantastic. Switching between apps has never been this easy (and 'fun'). Very fast as well.

EDIT: I'm trying to get the 'gesture' option resolved by using wayV.

Re: [Maemo 4] Where Do I download Skippy XD for Nokia N810?

Feature Request :
When launching an app from the app manager and closing the app (when in it) - return to the app manager screen instead of going to the app run before the one you closed. Maybe as an option.

There is no any benifit in running them both, because they are doing the same thing. It will just double amount of memory needed :) May be skippy-xd is more functional now, it can run apps by pressing keys and tapping corners, but we are going to support this functionality

Currently, telescope appears only by clicking upper hardware key. But if you like some another way to launch it - we can implement it (if possible ;) ).

We have a huge planned features list and it's keep growing! :) I will investigate how i can implement guesture support. Thanks for request.

Got the idea. But what should happen if i start the application, then switch to another, then back to first one, and then close it? What should appear? Telescope or second application? I need to clarify the idea in order to implement it.

a) Click empty space on the desktop (may not be for everyone so maybe as an optional thing),
b) Create an applet that you can have on your desktop and click on in order to launch the app manager,
c) Have a configuration setting where you can indicate what area x,y-grid that you click on on the desktop in order to launch the app manager (could maybe be achieved by having the 'applet' in 'b' above sizeable by the user and made transparent/invisible but still active even if another applet it ontop of it,
d) gesture on desktop to start app manager,
e) pre-defined areas like lower-right corner to launch the app manager.

Those four options are all I can think of.

I see what you mean. I think the rule could be as simple as
"IF Application X is launched from App Manager and Closed THEN return to App Manager".
If there are apps launched after App X then just let the default OS handing take over and determine what app to go to. :)

And. Telescope made it to my 'Top 15 apps' in my sig :-)

Re: [Maemo 4] Where Do I download Skippy XD for Nokia N810?

Feature request 2:

If you have seen the Firefox/chrome extension "SpeedDial" you might know what I mean with this.

I would love for Telescope to - in addition to being an app manager for active apps - also being a way to launch your favorite apps.

The way it COULD work would be something like this:

a) Get to the 'favorite' app list by double-clicking the hardware key, or by clicking an option icon made available on the regular telescope application manager screen,

b) The 'favorite list' would have the same nice thumbnail layout as app manager - but now made up of non-active application. You could either a) define what applications should be in the list, or
b) let it be determined based on how often an application is run.

The thumbnails for these favorites should be able to be dragged around/arranged - and 'locked' into a position you chose.

You should also be able to add favorite web-pages here. Maybe have 'most visited' web pages automatically appear on the lower 'rows' and they could then be 'locked in', arranged, etc as well just as the applications.

Then slap a nice user interface row on top showing a clock/date and a switch between the app manager and the favorite manager - and I'd be good to go :)

Hey Kroll!

Are you positive that sudo killall hildon-desktop will immediately show the changes made to the status bar applet panel?

I've killed the desktop several times but the status bar remains unaffected. The only way is to reboot the tablet which begins to pound the battery after awhile.

Is there any other way to do this?

Thanks!
