League selection is now through a TreeView. For once, it was easier to implement than I thought it would be!

Yes, I'm planning some kind of 'favourite' leagues.

Sure, some might say "Why not just use the standard Maemo feed reader or any other standalone rss app (where I actually have subsribed the sports feeds of interest to me already), but I like the idea of having a one-stop app for sports information.

This is several releases away, so I haven't spent much time thinking on this....

Backgrounds! That's what I need right now. In my development version, the background is now green, but if someone can find/create a (set of) nice backgrounds that I could put it, I'll consider them! Worst case I'll just take a picture of the football field of the school I can see from my balcony :)

Can you give some specifications?
(Background for which screens exactly, size, file format, maybe a screenshot of the current GUI...)
So that the skilled gaphic designers out there know where to start...

Latest screenshots. I'd like a background for the Select, Matches and Table screens, maybe even one for each? The 'style' of the Select TreeView is not what I expected. It appears to be the default 'hildon' style although I thought I'd set it to Plastique... Oh well...

The idea would be to have a 'News' tab as well with league related news (RSS). There will also be settings window where you can add the currently selected league to your favourites.

This app would be very useful. I hope you can finish it. I would definately use something like this. Sometimes it's hard to keep track of what's going on. I can't tell you how many matches I forgot about to remember about it 1 hour it's finished.. A feature with match dates too would be great.

This App looks brilliant, I'm about to install it.

May I ask if it will have the world-cup stats in it when the world cup starts?

Ah one thing that hasnīt been mentioned in this thread: Portrait Mode!

I know there is a lot of whining about portrait mode out there, but I think it would be a really nice addition to this app.
Especially when you think about league tables and long match days or maybe for the World Cup screens with the matches and the group tables in one view...
Plus, the addition of club logos / flags might make a certain line height necessary and will look probably better in portrait mode!?

I understand that this is easier to implement with PR1.2 (right?).
Just wanted to suggest you keep that in mind ;-)

Re: FIFA World Cup App ?

Anyone is an ace on CSS classes?

The SoccerDB site explains how the HTML can be formatted here: http://www.aragon.ws/soccerdb/site/usingmatches.php

My first lame attempts are as follows:

Code:

<HTML>
                <style type="text/css">
                .Date
                {
                        font-family: verdana, geneva, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;
                        background-color: #00FF66;
                        padding: 2px;
                        margin: 5px;
                        border-left-style: groove;
                        border-left-color: green;
                        border-left-width: 5px;
                        border-bottom-style: ridge;
                        border-bottom-color: yellow;
                        border-bottom-width: 5px;
                }
                .Match
                {
                        font-family: verdana, geneva, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;
                        color: blue;
                        background-color: #ffffff;
                        padding: 2px 1px;
                }

                </style>
<script type="text/javascript"
src="http://www.aragon.ws/soccerdb/getmatches.php?id=714&css=Match&cssDate=Date"></script>
</HTML>
<script type="text/javascript"
src="http://www.aragon.ws/soccerdb/gettable.php?id=714&css=Match"></script>
</HTML>

As I'm more of a developer than a designer, community help is appreciated here... I haven't figured out if it is possible to use a style for the table either. So far I only got to work with the matches.

robbie 2010-04-17 12:02

Re: FIFA World Cup App ?

Sure you can change the table style (see below). How do you want to have the things styled? Can you create a mockup?

Code:

<HTML>
  <head>
    <style type="text/css">
      body {
        font-family: verdana, geneva, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;
      }
      table {
        background-color: white;
        color: blue;
      }
    .Date {
      background-color: #00FF66;
      color: black;
      padding: 2px;
      margin: 5px;
      border-left-style: groove;
      border-left-color: green;
      border-left-width: 5px;
      border-bottom-style: ridge;
      border-bottom-color: yellow;
      border-bottom-width: 5px;
    }
    .Match {
      padding: 2px 1px;
    }

    </style>
    <script type="text/javascript" src="http://www.aragon.ws/soccerdb/getmatches.php?id=714&css=Match&cssDate=Date"></script>
    <script type="text/javascript" src="http://www.aragon.ws/soccerdb/gettable.php?id=714&css=Match"></script>
  </head>
<body>

</body>
</HTML>

You also can parse the soccerdb data to create a 'csv file' that you can use in a qt component. It shouldn't be that hard.

Just take a look here: http://www.aragon.ws/soccerdb/getmatches.php?id=714

No. I don't have anything specific in mind. Anyway, I'm sure you can provide a sample faster than I can provide a mockup.:)

From a non developer-view:
The flexibility and ability to design the layout seems pretty limited with the gettable/match.php method. E. g. I have no idea how logoīs can be implemented into this view!?

Doesnīt Robbies approach of "loading, storing and reusing" the data provide more flexibility - feature and layout wise?

Yes. once I get that far I'll compare what is best; to parse the HTML data or to download the .ts formatted league files. To some extent it depends on how updated the data in the .ts is and how big a download they are.

Some more icon requests...

I need some small (I have to find out the exact size requirements) icons to use as the tab headings. They should be simple. The headings I have now are:

Select (a check box maybe)
Favourites (stealing the fav icons from Firefox? or add a star to the select icon?)
Matches (some minuscule text ___ - ___ 1-1?)
Table (similar to matches)
News (rss icon or something 'newspaper like'?)
Update scores (same as matches but with a + sign?)
Might need more, but that's all for now.

Re: FIFA World Cup App ?

The soccerdb parsing can be done online so it's always up-to-date.

Here's a php script that parses the data and puts it a simple format.

demo is at: http://gnista.xs4all.nl/soccerdb/results.php

Code:

<?php
    $url = 'http://www.aragon.ws/soccerdb/getmatches.php?id=714';

    function get_web_page( $url ) {
        $options = array(
            CURLOPT_RETURNTRANSFER => true,    // return web page
            CURLOPT_HEADER        => false,    // don't return headers
            CURLOPT_FOLLOWLOCATION => true,    // follow redirects
            CURLOPT_ENCODING      => "",      // handle compressed
            CURLOPT_USERAGENT      => "spider", // who am i
            CURLOPT_AUTOREFERER    => true,    // set referer on redirect
            CURLOPT_CONNECTTIMEOUT => 120,      // timeout on connect
            CURLOPT_TIMEOUT        => 120,      // timeout on response
            CURLOPT_MAXREDIRS      => 10,      // stop after 10 redirects
        );

        $ch      = curl_init( $url );
        curl_setopt_array( $ch, $options );
        $content = curl_exec( $ch );
        $err    = curl_errno( $ch );
        $errmsg  = curl_error( $ch );
        $header  = curl_getinfo( $ch );
        curl_close( $ch );

        $header['errno']  = $err;
        $header['errmsg']  = $errmsg;
        $header['content'] = $content;
        return $header;
    }

    $rawdata = get_web_page($url);
    $content = $rawdata['content'];

    $content = str_replace("document.write('", '', $content);
    $content = str_replace("');", '', $content);
    $content = str_replace(chr(10), '', $content);
    $content = str_replace(chr(13), '', $content);
    $content = str_replace('</td>', '|', $content);
    $content = str_replace('</tr>', '#', $content);
    $content = str_replace('&nbsp;','',$content);
    $content = strip_tags($content);

    $rows =explode('#',$content);
    $result = Array();
    foreach ($rows as $row) {
        $columns = explode('|',$row);
        if (count($columns) == 2) {
            echo 'date:' . trim($columns[0]) .chr(13).chr(10);
        }
        if (count($columns) == 7) {
            echo trim($columns[0]) . '|' . trim($columns[2]) . '|' . trim($columns[3]) . '|' . trim($columns[5]) .chr(13).chr(10);

?>

It's not really meant for adding an extra layer. It's to show that it's pretty easy to create a parser. If you leave out the function to fetch the remote page, it's only 20 lines of php. And it should be fairly simple to program in another language.

I'm happy to announce QSportsEvent 0.0.4! This is the first truly usable version of the app!

IT IS RECOMMENDED THAT YOU FIRST UNINSTALL ANY PREVIOUS VERSION!

What's new?
  • Everything!!

How to use? There are 6 tabs:
1. Select: From here you can select any of the leagues that are available. Once selected, you will immediately be shown the 3:Matches tab for that league. Please note that not 100% of them work, but that is more likely to be due to SoccerDB. If there is one you want, please check with SoccerDB to see if it works there. If it does, I'll look at it in QSportsEvent.
2. Favourites: I provide a list of default favourites. You can select and remove if you don't want them. To add favourites, first chose a league from under 1:Select. The currently selected league will be added to favourites if you click the Add button. In the future you will be able to enter a URL which will be displayed in tab 5:News. I probably should go straight to 3:Matches even here when a league is selected.
3: Matches: The most recent games of the select league.
4: Table: The updated table for the selected league.
5: News: News for the selected league. At the moment is only badly displays the RSS feed for Italian Serie A from SkySports.
6: Update Scores: A link back to SoccerDB where you can update scores yourself(!). Oops! I haven't tested this at all as I didn't want to mess around with the SoccerDB data, so I'm not sure it will work. Please, be careful when you update there!

ToDo:
  • Investigate the auto-shutdown issue (This is the killer of the app. If I want it to have a future, I've got to fix this. Interestingly, it is a bug it shares with my other Qt app for Maemo, QTeachMe...)
  • Warning! The very first time I launched it after installation it died straight away. On subsequent attempts it does stay alive long enough to be able to have a look at it at least.
  • Change font colour in 'Favourites' tab to black.
  • Proper display of the RSS feed (it looked nice on my Windows version...)
  • RSS URL to be editable and working in the Favourites tab
  • Use the better application icons (it still uses the super boring one from the previous version!)
  • Add icons in the screens (flags and logos)
  • Provide for offline data.
  • Portrait mode...

Looking forward to your comments!

PS! I didn't even bother to try to upload it to Extras-Devel this time, so if you want it, it's from here you should get it.

Great thanks to those who have made contributions!

/Magnus

EDIT: .deb file removed as there are newer ones available.

I love this app. Great work so far. Do you need anything?

Magnuslu my biggest compliments - this app is on its way to be one of the TOP apps for Maemo :-) !
(ok, for now the auto-showdown is still a showstopper, but hey its v0.0.4 and no final release)

Ok, here is my feedback for 0.0.4 so far
(including some minor things, especially like design/optical issues that are not really important at this stage.
Not to bother you, just for completeness ;-) ):

General: While the app starts, the open tasks screen shows up, thats a little bit confusing
Scrollbars look different in each screen. Personally I prefer the grey one, or stay with the color theme - light blue back, dark blue bar?

Tabs: Is it possible to make the icons slightly bigger and align them in the center of the tabs?

Select: Wouldnīt it be nicer to have the background fixed?
Maybe increase the font size to make it more finger friendly?

Favourites: Again, fixed Background?
Font color black for readability and font size bigger for finger friendliness?
Add/Remove bigger with a nice button? (ok, just noticed the feature is not yet implemented ;-) )
Can the list be sorted? e.g. move up/down buttons...
On start no favourite is highlighted, no prob, but when an entry is highlighted, the table header font changes to bold
No idea what the "default" column means and why the entries can be edited, but I am sure you have something in mind here ;-)

Matches: Nice, especially with the todays result of my favourite club (won 7-0, now everyone may guess what it is ;-) )
Scrolling works only with the scrollbar, but not in the screen itself
A feature to switch matchdays forward/backward would be nice, possible?
Update button to refresh the results would be nice - even better would be the "deluxe solution" see below "New Tab"

Tables: Table is not scrolable till the end
Again, feature to switch matchdays?

New Tab "Live Scores"?: A live scores feature with auto-update or even push functionality would be really awesome!!!

Thats it for now from me...
Hope more testers will share there feedback and ideas :-)

Thanks again Magnuslu for your great job!

Install the app and test... find bugs, enhance the graphics, come up with nice feature ideas :D

Yepp. Just about everything you have reported is on my radar (and a few more...). Most of them are due to the way I do development. As this is Qt, I can run the app just nicely on Windows. I spend 99% of my time developing, debugging and fixing on the Windows version. When the day comes to an end, I make the effort to create a debian package to install on the device. A whole bunch of things only emerge when I test on the target device, but by that time it is too late at night to get back and start fixing again... Especially 'fingerscrollable', sizes, some colours, some HTML/URL rendering, ... But please, do continue to provide feedback! It helps me setting priorities for the issues to fix.

Hi,

created two more baclkground drafts...just to give the community something to discuss - please give feedback which one you like best, what you like and what you dont like.

Of course suggestions on improvement as well as enhanced or totally new drafts are more than welcome!!!
