Re: Flash video playback problems with pr 1.2
I have no adblock installed and I'm still getting choppy as hell video. I like all the other aspects of 1.2 except this... kind of lame that performance slowed down for this aspect.

Re: Flash video playback problems with pr 1.2
Used NSu when updated to 1.2
So far am quite impressed except for the major flash video playback issue. I've uninstalled AdBlock Plus and adflashblock, after reboot the problem is still there. I'm using N900 mostly to watch tv programming from sites like tvr.ro and if this will be solved in the same timeframe as PR1.1 - PR 1.2 I'm forced to look elsewhere for a similar product. |

Re: Flash video playback problems with pr 1.2
Hi everyone, I just got home and thought I'd play about with my N900 for a bit. I went through the browser settings and realised the memory cache size was set to 5 or 10mb. This has changed since the update. I have used both Automatic and 40mb before, so I changed this to Utomatic, went back to iPlayer and unless I am extremely lucky, it played smoothly straight away!
Could this be why it works for some and not others? I.e. those that happened to change the setting have got it working??? It may be worth a try. Either that has fixed mine or something even more strange may be happening! Good luck to everyone who tries it. I hope mine isn't just a spoof temporary fix. |
Re: Flash video playback problems with pr 1.2
set to automatic doesn't seem to improve things, loaders still stick at 1%

Re: Flash video playback problems with pr 1.2
hi Ads. which program did it let you watch please?
I am positive it is down to the BBC on this one, as this problem tarted happening BEFORE the PR1.2 update. It was working for me a few days before, then a day or two before 1.2 this problem started. There have been a couple of threads aleady from a few days ago about some websites updating to latest flash, and content no longer working on n900, meanwhile nokia have been silent on whether we will get a flash upgrade or not. I have also noticed there is now a 'try the beta' thing for the web iplayer. I tried it but still the same. Had to clear cookies to get it to let me go to www.bbc.co.uk instead of beta.bbc.co.uk, where it kept taking me. So the BBC are definitely up to something on their web site. Who knows, maybe it will start working again at some point. Something that DOES still work is the watch live pages there. That seems a little better since PR1.2, so at least we can still watch live bbc tv |
Re: Flash video playback problems with pr 1.2
Hi
Same problems here with web iPlayer, doesn't show video. But if you press the little full screen control on the player it then plays the video just fine. rgds |
Re: Flash video playback problems with pr 1.2
Just to add something else, my wife has an htc magic running android 1.6, and the beebplayer works and shows video and sound just as always. The watchlive option does not work for her.
PS As far as I know the htc magic does not have flash support at all, especially under 1.6. Anyone know how the beebplayer app does it?I am sure there was work here on an iplayer app at some point too. |
Re: Flash video playback problems with pr 1.2
uTMY, sorry doesn't work. just been back and tried again. Always used to full-screen it because it gave better quality, so I am sure most others do that too.
What have you got to work. I can go test it. maybe it is something to do with certain programmes? |
Re: Flash video playback problems with pr 1.2
Hi
I just went to iplayer web page, bbc2 one of the progs and pressed play. sure enuf black screen plus sound. pressed the maximise button on the web view ofvthe video. browser opens new window and plays video about 3/4 screen size landscape mode. rgds |
Re: Flash video playback problems with pr 1.2
Hello again.
I'll try iPlayer again and let you know what happens. I also realised I set my cache to 40mb, not automatic as I first said. Though I imagine a few of you have tried that already. When I last posted, I had loaded a few programs to try - something about African walks. History cold case. A few episodes of Dr Who and some other random ones. i did have a couple of glitches on Dr Who, but I later found it only happened when I went full screen in the pop out straight away. Or it was fluke. When I let the show play - as in get past the bbc ad first, then full screened it, it carried on fine. I'll try experiment a bit more when the management have disappeared! |
Re: Flash video playback problems with pr 1.2
Using 40mb cache, Eastenders (don't ask just the first link I clicked) played with sound and vision. Not exactly smooth or perfect, but it worked...
So is it 40mb cache and can we hack / modify to give more memory? Any thoughts? Also, worth looking at is TVCATCHUP - the iphone player now has a decent enough work around. Be patient it works after some delay... kudos http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php...+script&page=2 :) Quote:

seems others are having flash video playback problems too

Re: Flash video playback problems with pr 1.2
I've had a little play under the hood using
about:config Searched for anything with the word 'cache' and modified browser.cache.memory capacity from 40mb to 100mb also media.cache.size now up to 100mb Can't say that either of these have helped I also set browser.cache.disk.enable from false to true - but this didn't really help. In fact I tried iplayer and it went back to audio only, no video, so I reverted this setting back to false. I hope this inspires someone who can stumble upon a fix via settings... |
Re: Flash video playback problems with pr 1.2
I've just installed Conky,
it seems that CPU is running at 600mhz at around 90% to more often 99% when using iplayer. FYI: I use iplayer pop-up player. Picture quality is poor until I go to full frame and then it looks much improved. This is interesting as it is the same stream, but I imagine that the video scaling (to fit small embedded player) isn't handled as well by microb as playing video at full screen. So unsurprisingly there are CPU issues here - I haven't yet overclocked my n900 but am feeling tempted to. Any sensible advice from anyone with experience at overclocking theirs - please no "I've heard this and that". Thanks |
Re: Flash video playback problems with pr 1.2
has anyone been to here yet......
http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/otherversions/ and downloaded the flash player from there? also, those of you who can get it to still work, are you onlly global firmware, or UK? On the bbc website help forum there are also a bunch of people with desktops who have been having problems watching iplayer recently. I still think it's the BBCs fault, but why does it still work for some and not others. Might try uninstalling extra decoders support and see what that does...... |
Re: Flash video playback problems with pr 1.2
just downloaded a file from flash website called 'install flash player10 for linux.deb'
A bit scared to actually install it though. Does anyone with the knowledge know what it will/might do? |

Re: Flash video playback problems with pr 1.2
Please let me clarify my solution from yesterday. The addition of the blocking file wont speed things up on those loaders that hit 1% then stop. You will need patience there, with xnxx (its the only one that people mentioned by name for me to test - don't judge me :) ), it can take 1 min or so of it sitting on 1% - then the player starts and it works fine.
I cant say why this is except there must be something waiting to be loaded in the background that is now a blocking process in the browser. |
Re: Flash video playback problems with pr 1.2
A popular site! lol
But, not the only one with the same issue. I've taken to trying to get flash working in firefox, but without any luck.... Quote:

Re: Flash video playback problems with pr 1.2
I have never had adblock installed before or after 1.2, OR before or after bbc iplayer started being funny.
Tried putting that hosts file in there, no change. Maybe something that was installed by some and not others? Will try and work out what I downloaded round about when it stopped working and see if that does it. Only thing I can remember at the moment was wifi switcher, but that doesn't sound like it would be the problem. I'll uninstall stuff and see if anything works. PS if you CAN get it to workFare you on global or uk firmware. I'm on uk |
Re: Flash video playback problems with pr 1.2
On the bbc iplayer problem, the iphone has no flash but can use bbc's iplayer, is there not a way to dupe the sever and get access to the iphone feed?
Nokia did promote the N900 as having a full version of flash and not the moble flashlite, now less than 6 months after its release it is not compatable with allot of flash content, should Nokia not support its customers and sort this problem? |
Re: Flash video playback problems with pr 1.2
It would be nice to think so.
Given that they have sold so few n900s, they could probably take the time to visit us in person, lol. BTW no wifi switcher here Quote:

Re: Flash video playback problems with pr 1.2
I've uninstalled KM Player which has some flash content albeit nothing in common with the browser (I guess) and also extra codecs, still nothing.. Will keep on uninstalling stuff to see if anything conflicts with it.
|
Re: Flash video playback problems with pr 1.2
no luck with me yet either. uninstalled loads of stuff but still the same.
Must be something the BBC has done. making 'improvements' no doubt. |
Re: Flash video playback problems with pr 1.2
i was using iplayer quite happily earlier. you need to use the pop out player option though
|
Re: Flash video playback problems with pr 1.2
EVRYONE knows about the pop out. I think I might even have been the first one to discover it made things a whole lot better months ago. Several posts in this thread have also mentioned it. It is very weird that some people can still get it to work, wheras it has stopped working for others.

Re: Flash video playback problems with pr 1.2
Has anyone managed to figure out why the little bbc advert/ident plays fine, but then the video pauses there, while the audio continues? If flash was not working we wouldn't see that.
I'm going to get on to the bbc about it now and see what they say. |
Re: Flash video playback problems with pr 1.2
Seems like the BBC have already admitted a few days ago to changing how they stream their content:
http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/bbcintern...ew_bbc_ip.html Also found this on the meddage boards over there: "Announcement of support for Hardware Acceleration on BBC Blog Message 1. Posted by tonyddd (U14413313) on Wednesday, 26th May 2010permalink A few users of this board have previously tried to raise problems with the Adobe Flash 10.1 beta and hardware acceleration, although some other users have seemed to object claiming that our machines are simply not good enough and we shouldn't be asking for Hardware Acceleration to be enabled. However, the BBC iPlayer blog has now mentioned forthcoming support for Hardware Acceleration under Adobe Flash 10.1: www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/... Quote: "This new adaptive bitrate system, coupled with Adobe's upcoming Flash 10.1 release with H.264 hardware acceleration, should give better quality, less jerkiness and lower CPU usage on PCs equipped with a graphics cards that support H.264 hardware acceleration". So are we now allowed to ask whether problems with Hardware Acceleration not working with the 10.1 Betas have been resolved? Is it something that Adobe will be changing in the full release of 10.1 or will the BBC be making a change to the encoding to allow Hardware Acceleration to function? I don't want to hassle anyone, simply ask if the BBC could let us know whether the problems have been recognised and whether a solution is being worked on now that Hardware Acceleration is definitely on the radar. Many thanks!" |
Re: Flash video playback problems with pr 1.2
Here' a wild quest:
When a flash video is accessible on the N900, keep touching the menu and note what numbers the JW Player has. Mine is 4.5.216 and clicking on About does nothing as it does for the rest of the options of Toggling Fullscreen or changing the Stretching. I wonder what version those without ptoblems have and those still with PR 1.1 Also, the jw player went through version 5.0, 5.1 and even 5.5 as it seems, did Nokia forgot to update the JW Player for us? |

Re: Flash video playback problems with pr 1.2
Hi everyone,
I've played about a bit more and can confirm that there are items on iPlayer that I can play easily and smoothly, and others not. When I try to look at the differences, the main thing I can see is a huge leap in bitrate in the videos that don't play. On average, the ones that play have a bitrate of around 350 (can't remember exact amount). Those that froze or showed a blank screen and only played sound were around 750 on the bitrate front. That is when using the popout etc. Sorry if others have said this already - I've not managed to read everything recently. It does sound as though iPlayers "variable bitrate" changes may be causing this as a previous post mentioned. Not sure if there is much we can do about it for now unfortunately. Though it'll be good if someone does work something else out - or iPlayer gets sorted out if it is them! |
Re: Flash video playback problems with pr 1.2
I got a message to upgrade Flash when visiting YouTube... I had a look at about: plugins and it says no plugins installed? Huh? Did I miss something...?

Re: Flash video playback problems with pr 1.2
just got it to play iplayer using this method:
Click on rogram you wish to watch, then alter the web address as follows: You need to add /console/ to the web address, but you also need to chop off the /episode/ part as well as the /program_name/ part, so for example: http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode...and!_The_Band/ becomes. http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/console/b00snk78/ The program then opens up in a consol which you can then pop out etc just like you used to be able to when it worked like normal PS please don't comment on my choise of profram I picked it at random from the first page on iplayer, so there Hope this works for everyone else who is having difficulties. I have reproduced it working on a few programs now and it works great. Only one that hasn't worked so far is pirates of carribean. It's a shame as it ALL used to work near perfectly. MUST be to do with the BBC experimenting with nitrates. Hope some knowledgeable person can figure a workaround as has been said. hereams hoping |

Re: Flash video playback problems with pr 1.2
I can confirm that I have similar issues with iplayer on my (2005) desktop and laptop computers. I think its to do with the variable bitrate being upped because of my fast broadband, but the cpus on my aging computers can't cope with it.
Maybe there is a way to limit the amount of bandwidth available to iplayer? Alternatively, maybe we can somehow cap the bitrate in iplayer? |
Re: Flash video playback problems with pr 1.2
wouldn't of thought so. the bbc are using variable bitrates so we have no control on the streams. if you need to watch live bbc try tvcatchup as they now have a low stream which works perfectly now on the n900. If for tv shows you have missed then some work and some dont from the bbciplayer site.
