I entered "heavy" (all lower capital) to the question I got and proceeded without problems.

Another problem arises now though - the security sequencde that asks me about armaments of different units doesnt seem to accept the answers. I suspect its because I cannot enter a capital letter and enter 'light' ,'medium' or 'heavy' instead of 'Light' 'Medium' and 'Heavy'. Has anyone else encountered this?

I had no problem getting past this, first time I got there it asked for the armament of an unarmed building and accepted "none" fine, second time with a different house I was asked for the armour value of a rocket launcher and it accepted "medium" - Dumb suggestion, but make sure you're actually getting the answers right as capitalisation doesnt seem to be an issue here ;)

It accepts some answers and some other not. I think that simply some answer i found on internet are wrong. For exemple the type of devastator. But with few try i always pass.

Happy to be the 10th vote. Thanks Smoku for this and all your other work

Re: OpenDUNE - Dune II remake

An important question: does OpenDune use any resources (code, graphics, sound) from the original Dune II game? If so, are they properly licensed?
It is a mandatory requirement for Maemo Extras apps: see http://wiki.maemo.org/Extras-testing/QA_checklist

Sorry but, as a safeguard, I reverted my vote from thumbs up to thumbs down, so that package karma is now 9, in order to "force" you to check this. If licensing problems arise for an Extras package, all Maemo community will receive bad publicity. It has already happened for some stuff related to console emulators.

Re: OpenDUNE - Dune II remake

It's a valid question. It's good that you raised it.

Dune II is 18 year old abandonware freely available on the Internet.
Westwood Studios successfully released to freeware older versions of their games as a promotional action for newer games in the series. Ex. http://www.commandandconquer.com/classic

It's a bit unclear for Dune II, but if you google "dune II download" you will find many legitimate sites offering it for download. In most countries it felt out of 15 years copyright protection already (but in some countries it is 21 years).

The data package itself is fetched from http://wiki.opendune.org/Development/Linux

Thanks! The new version works!
Now the last thing that makes it less than perfect are small lags when commanding units.

Tahanks a lot !
Everything works now.
From time to time, the game freezes and i need to crash it. But save often and its ok.

A fullscreen mode wouldnt look that nice, would it ?

Please see OpenDUNE site for explanation why they left the check in place. I tend to agree and won't remove the check.

I cant figure out the scurity question does anybody have a link to the questions? I tried googleing but found nothing. Thanks

Re: OpenDUNE - Dune II remake

They're in the manual, if you own the game. I don't know what legal implications are. I will say that Google has the answers, look harder.

Only problem is I can't type numbers so I have to retry a few times until I get a no-number answer.

Re: OpenDUNE - Dune II remake

I also have problems with the game crashing, but I guess that's a bit harder to fix... Does everyone have those problems?

Save often.. :)

Re: OpenDUNE - Dune II remake

It's odd, sometimes it crashed 3 times in the same mission. Other times I played for hours. Don't have an explanation - but because it lags when playing sound I disabled sound and music. No crashes.

haj 2010-06-09 18:35

Re: OpenDUNE - Dune II remake

I disabled sound as well.. but still have crashes..

Re: OpenDUNE - Dune II remake

Thank you very much Smoku for porting OpenDUNE to the N900. Used to love this game, especially playing the evil Harkonnen ;) Installed it onto the N900 and it works fine, despite occassional freezes and crashes (as mentioned here before).

I read through the 10 pages here and tried to change some config myself (in which I failed). Still have some questions:
- The game is not full screen. Is it possible to make this so?
- I can hear the (awesome) sound effects, but there is no music. Is this a MIDI issue or...?

Thanks and keep up the wonderful work! :)

Re: OpenDUNE - Dune II remake

Hi everyone

DUNE came into maemo extras today (not testing or devels).

So I downloaded it and while installing it, it came up with unable to install opendune.

So when I had a look at my applications opendune was there so I tried to open it but what happens is that a blank screen comes up for about 5 secs then it just goes back to the main slide menu.

So I tried to uninstall it but the application is nto in the list of app to uninstall.

So any suggestions please.....

Go into xterminal and type:
root (you need rootsh installed)
apt-get install opendune

What you'll probably find is the same issue as me in that it can't download the data files. I never found a neat solution to it I'm afraid.. maybe someone else can help.

If you want to get rid of it..

apt-get remove opendune

Will work.

I've just completed the game as House Harkonnen.. :)

Or have I.. Is it supposed to just exit after winning the battle with the two other houses + the emperor?

I did, the download source is shaky. Keep trying, I downloaded mine on the 5th try. I just copied the wget line and tried it separately several times until it went online.

Took me -maybe- 5 minutes of trying,

You're supposed to get a cut scene where the emperor is confronted. Check Youtube for "Dune II Ending".

Re: OpenDUNE - Dune II remake

uhm... then I guess it's a bug.. because the game just exits..

I think the good doctor meant to say that the PC/Windows/DOS version of Dune 2 didn't promptly exit. The port might.

Indeed, I haven't got to the end of a campaign on OpenDune yet to know if it actually shows the cutscene or not like the original game did.

I've uploaded new version, which fetches fixed scenario.pak.
Maybe this would solve your problem.

great work!
is this compatable with a DOS save game do you think?

smoku 2010-06-27 19:18

Re: OpenDUNE - Dune II remake

Could be. It uses decompiled original DOS code.
Please try and report result here.

Is the MIDI music somewhere in the pipeline of this project? Or is not considered a priority at all? :)

Yep, I copied my Dosbox save over, and it worked fine.

Hi there,
excellent stuff bringing back this classic game, great stuff. But I installed the game and whenever I select a house to start a game I get a message that there is "No More Scenarios!" and then the game crahses!
I used the App Manager to install the game, am I missing something?

in the "original" game u will see a short ending sequence with the emperor, followed by credits... after that - i think it should quit.

but it definitly is the final mission (emperor+2 houses) :)
maybe ending sequence isnt implemented yet

smoku 2010-06-29 16:12

Re: OpenDUNE - Dune II remake

IIRC the ending sequence problem is a known bug.
It's 0.3 version anyway. ;)

Re: OpenDUNE - Dune II remake

I've noticed now, this is windows exe running under the hood. And when I took this directly from n900 to my PC it works the same way. Maybe its keep crashing because to many layers of complexity? Is it big deal to compile it to .deb since linux sources are available to download?

I took a look on development blog and in fact they keep improving decompiler is nothing done from scratch. And they still have some issues with this anyway.

smoku 2010-06-29 16:20

Re: OpenDUNE - Dune II remake

Well... Saying "nothing done from scratch" is hugely unfair.
The developers wanted high compatibility with original Dune II, so they used disassembled and decompiled sources of original Dune II as a base. It was a lot of work to decompile.
Then, Dune II is a DOS game (INT 0x10 anyone? ;) ), so they needed to write DOS to SDL translation layer, which is being gradually phased out as parts of the decompiled code are being rewritten to native.

It is a lot of work which gives them a lot of kudos.

S0urcerr0r 2010-07-11 14:16

Re: OpenDUNE - Dune II remake

woaw... i remember the legendary "int 21", from when i learned a little asm programming when i was younger i think it was used to access the keyboard :)

i wonder what happened with all of that... if these int's arent used at all anymore while asm coding under windows or linux? :)

maybe theres a int table somewhere... i guess it would be thousands of pages long though

msa 2010-07-11 14:44

Re: OpenDUNE - Dune II remake

i like that, but i wish there was an optional control scheme:
swiping and pointing around the touchscreen does nothing else than move the cursor, and left- and right-click should be assigned to buttons on the keyboard. i think that would make some shortcuts obsolete and you wouldnt click on something accidently just because you were moving the cursor.

btw i'd love that for every strategy-game there is on the n900.

S0urcerr0r 2010-07-11 15:04

Re: OpenDUNE - Dune II remake

yeah it would be nice with some additional n900 hw keyboard controls. and perhaps a feature to keymap if the another keyboard layout is used.

dune 2 was one of the most advanced strategy games of its times and still have elements not present in newer games:
- a foot soldier/vehicles retreating will start running faster and faster while being attacked during their retreat.
- same units can attack slower and faster depending on the house controlling it.
- many graphical effects like trails in the sand after vehicles, and dead bodies slowly sinking in the sand.
- foot soldiers was the only units being able to cross rocks.
- using the starport to order units could be a cheap method to get new units... but it was unreliable. sometimes the deliveries wouldnt come.
- battle music - when enemies approach. the music changes

I am working on design document for Dune2 alike RTS for touch screen slates and mobiles.
But I still have no idea how to express that unique Dune2 feeling without actually using Dune universe.
