Re: [Announce] scout - search contacts, conversations and calendars
I think I have found and fixed the bug.
The new version is uploaded to the extras-devel autobuilder. The armel build succeed but the i386 build failed. I don't know why. nicolai |
Re: [Announce] scout - search contacts, conversations and calendars
Until the problem with i386 build is fixed you can
try out this version. regards Nicolai edit: current version (0.0.6) is in extras-devel as well. |

No everything is selected !! I`ve checked already..
|
Re: [Announce] scout - search contacts, conversations and calendars
This is strange!
Can you deselect everything except conversations and search with a query which is definitly in your text messages, like "e" for example. regards Nicolai |

easier and less time consuming than one general purpose search. Designing and developing something flexible and extensible (plugable modules for new datasources, filetypes, applications ...) like spotlight for example would be a great project but far away from the time I can afford. Of course, I could add the application search in scout. But scout is meant to be an application for contact and conversation related searches. Example usecase: You can only remember a part from a phone number and you don't know if this number is in your contacts or someone sent you the number in message. Would you expect something valueable from the results from the application search? |
Re: [Announce] scout - search contacts, conversations and calendars
I disabled all settings and enabled all of them again .. then I search with just "e" and all contacts with an e are the result.. nothing of calender and conversations !!:(
|
Re: [Announce] scout - search contacts, conversations and calendars
And what happens if you enable only the conversation
search or only the calendar search? |
Re: [Announce] scout - search contacts, conversations and calendars
Some typical 'standard user' use-case feedback.
Searching for a Calendar event now works perfectly. I can search and find any text embedded in any 'Calendar' entry. Although it takes exactly 4 min to search my 12 years of calender entries, quite OK, but slower than the old Palm device. Selecting the calender entry, will display a 'screen capture' of the contents, (ie cannot be scrolled). Touching the 'Calendar' tab in this 'screen capture' will take you directly to the calendar event. From there you can edit or scroll the contents. OK. The search will also find any text embedded in a 'note' entry. Selecting the note entry, will display a 'screen capture' of the contents, (ie cannot be scrolled). Touching the 'Calendar' tab in this 'notes screen capture' will take you to a random calendar event, but I wanted it to point to the searched 'note' item, not a calendar item. So I then try & select the status bar on top, then select 'go to notes', but this does not take me to the searched note item. Sometimes I just want to search my notes (not all the calendar), but there is no option to do so in 'settings'. Some constructive feedback, and further difficult challenges should you wish make continuous improvements. There is allot of focus for this forum, so you must be onto something great. Cheers, Jackchat @ Australia. |
Re: [Announce] scout - search contacts, conversations and calendars
Hi Nicolai
I still have the same crash problem, only change being it shows the first few results of the search, waits for couple of seconds and then crashes. Can you make post debug version for this 0.5 version Cheers |

Thank you for this detailed review.

Great work!
I am hoping we might see a widget front-end for this at some point. What do you say? |

Boah! From 12 Years? I guess this is not normal... :D But you can ask me. As a common standard N900 user I had a look at my calendar and my oldest entry (expect the birthdays) is from 1999. But I have to wait under 1 Minute for the results. So I guess this extreme case with 12 years of meeting history has a little bit more entrys than I. ;) But in my opinion 12 years is not as long as it seems. I won't delete anything, too. |
Re: [Announce] scout - search contacts, conversations and calendars
Hmm... I have 10 user defined Calendars, 2 of them are Smart Calendars. I use this as categories (private, work, appointments, Reminders, Birthdays, vataction planer, eCoach...).
What about searching only in specific Calendars? |
Re: [Announce] scout - search contacts, conversations and calendars
At last search functionality that comes close to that of the palm. Thank you very much!! Did I miss this.
Tried the version that still crashed on conservations. That one took approximately 20 mb of my root memory. I'll install the optified Scout version when it enters the extra testing repository, but can hardly wait. ps I have my agenda going back to 1999 too and approximately 1000 contacts. Indexing might become a real option. |
Re: [Announce] scout - search contacts, conversations and calendars
Does the latest version (0.0.6) still crash?
Btw, 20 mb of root memory? The package has only ~ 40 kb size. |

I guess it is because of the activation of EXTRA DEVEL at your device. (a lot of things are stored locally while updating the catalog - because of this it is so slow) Simply deactivate EXTRA Devel and reboot your N900. Your lost memory will be there as before. :) |

any chance you have sysklogd installed? And if so, there may be some debug messages in /var/log/syslog. Otherwise I would like to give you a version which prints some debug messages on the console, so I can trace back what could be the problem. regards nicolai |

Rootfs free mem dropped by 10 mb, usage of ram increased during query but dropped afterwoods just like you said. Available rootfs mem remains at 62 mb while before the queries this was almost 73 mb. after quiting scout Ram usage drops approx 20 mb, rootfs usage remains the same unfortunately. Can't help it sorry... |
Re: [Announce] scout - search contacts, conversations and calendars
What I did:
Reboot device, wait some minutes, rootfs 66% free. Start scout, make some searches with many results. rootfs 66% free. The other thing is free RAM. It is difficult to use this value if you want to measure how much memory a program need. There are many background processes. And it can happen that the program triggers the OS to swap unused memory. So you can have even more free RAM while using scout. In the last 20 minutes the free RAM value changed between 8 and 32 mb (without starting any application). nicolai |

info maybe then we find out what the problem is. nicolai |
Re: [Announce] scout - search contacts, conversations and calendars
Additional testing resulted still in significant drop of rootfs memory. However after a longer period (got a coffee) the rootfs is freed up again. So it seems to use a lot of rootfs but releases it as well after some time.
Other question: Is it possible to create combined queries like: all appointments with Lars in 2010? In general: where are the votes guys? Scout needs them! |

New version with new settings will be released after
the competition is over. Please vote for this app if you like it. If you don't like it, vote for an other app, but VOTE :-) (Give the developers feedback!) nicolai |
