this alone will help confirm my fears towards the future as i dont
want to invest lots of time and energy into a product that will fade away in the midst in a quick step fashion.

it is inevitable that at some point all bought electronics products
will cross that line from being useful to dead but if the n900 has
life kicking for the next few years and beyond then my time and energy is worth while.

IANAL, but I would say is handled under warranty (thus on a case by case basis and would be valid only if an advertised feature would be broken or missing), which is different than upgrade-upgrade-upgrade support people are missing (even though bugtracker activity suggests that it, in fact, hasn't completely stopped), both of which are a different thing from what is speculated by the OP, the N900 stopping being sold in a particular country :)

Nitpick: Qt has been available under GPL for over 5 years already, 8 if we don't count the win32 version (which is irrelevant in this context anyway). The recent licence change (adding LGPL) just allows closed-source apps without buying a commercial licence.

I'm not sure I see the panic.
A stop in support will not mean that the operating system stops working.
You will still be able to use your N900 for all of the things you bought it for.
Some development will continue in the community, although yes, the development of apps will slow down eventually.

Right now though I'm not really sure how many people are worried about any of the above . They are either deep into the technology and writing code or they have everything the like on their device and enjoy using it and tweaking it every so often. As said many people will use this device for ages until the hardware fails and then give it up. Your aspirations may differ but that is another matter.

I really don't understand the question. I already have the device that can do what I expect from a pocketable device. So why should I be upset?

I would argue the N97 was the shortest lived phone as it was very quickly replaced with the N97 mini. My operater removed the N97 after about 4 months, so the N900 at 6 months is a slight improvement. :) Interesting that both were Nokia. I can't think of an HTC phone that is removed from market as quick.

But as Nokia just lost it's number 2 AND has a new number 1. Who knows what will happen, I can't see them staying as they are and to me it will be in the direction of Win7 or Android and Symbian. Something about the American culture and wanting the sales numbers to compete, not the innovation which takes effort.

At a guess, It works, is stable. It can do picture messages, individual ringtones, battery lasts longer. My sister has one and has had for a year more than I have had this turkey and it still just works. She didn't want a phone to 'hack', she wanted a phone that does what it says. And voila, the N95 is that phone. Make me jealous sometimes because hers rings when people call (mine has given up on that privilage), tells her when she misses a call without apps, she can store music and play it without an indexer killing the OS. All the things that haven't ruined the N900.

No, what I mean is that the device is advertised with a working browser, Adobe Flash, etc. You'd then expect security and reliability fixes for such software. Many corporations don't provide them quickly (Microsoft, Apple), but it seems Nokia doesn't provide the Firefox and Adobe Flash security patches at all. They simply stop providing firmware updates after a year, and I believe this is not according to EU law because according to this a product should remain functioning for 2 years (and ever afterwards, too). Mind you, I am not asking about new features.

personally, i would buy a WinMo 7 or iPhone 4gs (when it's out). I'll probably change once my N900 dies or annoys me to the point that i might throw out the window. So far, my only concern is the battery drain issue and the typical issues that everyone posted about already.

lol... yea Venemo & scribbles. I'm getting one.

The one at the office did suffer a broken microUSB adapter, but they abused that thing. The other one I used to use got returned.

And why not get one. I am a Maemo fan, actually. Bad part though... they've yet to charge my card and update the order. I'm getting a bit scared.

By the way, anyone knows the lifecycle of a phone model these days?

I guess why bother unless you only want to have the latest models and pay premium right?

When I bought the N900, the N8 was already announced. But I preferred the capability and uniqueness of the N900 (I think the size is unique too - no one else carrying these brick-sized phones anymore).

Won't stay for too long on the same place so would have to buy it on stores. And buying them on/from my country is not affordable. If I buy over the internet to get it shipped to me I will pay 60% or so of tax and over here the price is way higher something equivalent to 750 euros.

i was worried about this... untill i got one and saw whats been going on here :D

Going to be more than happy with the n900 for years to come, theres already enough infromation, users and devs here to keep me busy reflashing hacking and tweaking this device for a long time.

I've always planned on getting the N900 some day no matter what, for my secondary phone, of course. I gave it a few days test run as my primary smartphone in spring to get the idea of it. Sure, it's not very good as a phone and it's expensive but I wouldn't even mind hauling it along with my primary portrait candybar just because sliding it open brings a big grin on my face. It's surely a milestone in mobile computing. I hope the remaining inventory gets a price drop soon, I might get a hold of couple.
