It still seems to me that the beta 4 is more stable and usable than the public versions. Besides take a glimpse at the bug list... most of them affect only Android and others aren't that severe.

ftp://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/mobile/releases/

Thanks for info but i know its nightly builds just told that beta 4 was there and wanted to know how it is.And if am correct this post from start provides link to nightly builds and and not public release

I am using the fennec 4 beta since beta 1 and I'm upgrading it every few days to the latest nightly build.

Its really fast to use already, and scrolling seems even smoother than with microb. Its also using slightly less memory (quite incredible) and I'm not even counting the mem usage of the browserd daemon that's always running.

Start-up time is ok, though not quite as fast as microB (and I doubt that it will ever be as fast as microb as it has its browserd daemon running all the time). But on the other hand I observed that while microb starts really fast, it takes a long time until it loads the first site, so I think that it still has to load its browsing engine. Therefore I think it doesn't really take any longer to display the first site on fennec even if the GUI starts up slower.

There are still some shortcomings though:
-There's no possibility to enable the mouse pointer you can activate to select text.
-Flash (should be fine later on though)
-not all plugins are working right now
-the chat panel in facebook (and similar panels on few other sites)
aren't staying on the bottom of the screen when scrolling

I still prefer to use fennec instead of microb, except for some sites like facebook or when I need to copy some text, etc...

Well the bug with the chat panel in facebook not staying at the bottom of the screen seems to be solved now. :-)

Re: Fennec 4 beta 3

One thing Fennec/FF has over MicroB and Opera is that it displays mobile websites just how they should, i.e. Big text and wrapped. MicroB's zoomed out approach is nasty you have to squint to read or zoom in and constantly scroll back and forth to read a line of text.

it always crashes. useless for now....

Re: Fennec 4 beta 3

Weird, I've been using it loads and it's only crashed once on me. Maybe an app conflict?

Re: Fennec 4 beta 3

Just installed 4.0b3 and been playing with it about 15mins. So far not so good. Not quite at the point of dumping it (again) but I can't see it being as usable as the latest Opera or MicroB.

Biggest issue so far is the still laggy UI. Tabs are ok, but IMO still not quite as slick as Opera's.

If I was still using FF on the laptop, syncing is/would be a big plus, however in my case FF is the back-up to SRWare's Iron (Chromium) browser.

Start-up speed was definitely faster than previous builds from mid-2010 (iirc) and compared to MicroB performance seemed similar when on WiFi and 3G.

But, the UI is still the main stumbling block for me.

It's a pity, I really would like to see Fennec on par with MicroB and Opera. At the moment, I'll still have to give it a couple of more versions untill I dump the other two.

I think it's playing some sort of funny game with process priorities, for example if I have something extremely cpu consuming at nice +20 lowest priority, firefox mobile seems to never render a page..

Quick question, Is there a 'latest' Opera? the one I have is 10.1 beta, is there a newer version or is that the only one?

This version runs a little faster.

Still much slower than the native browser of the N900.

The mouse pointer if you have installed "BT-HID-Scripts " or "extmouse" still does not work in Firefox.

for now this browser has little added value apart from it stil being developed and updated.

This could become something great:

-with an option to copy the MicroB user interface (no tabs)

-as soon as plugins like noscript & adblock folow as wel as other classics.

Ive read NoScript needs different programming approach to become compatible so it could take a while.

I think having tabs is one of the better features of this browser. Instead of having to keep opening windows and go out to the multitasking menu, you can do it all within one window (quite easily I might add.)
I can't disagree with having more options, but I think this is solidly one of the better features that Fennec offers.

I've used Firefox as my default browser since the release of v1.0. To me the Firefox UI with tabs is the best thing about it. MicroB's UI was driving me crazy. I'd hate to see the default Firefox UI changed, but a plugin or option to modify it to suit would be ok. Choice is good.

Ahm....

Browser should only show webpages as they are written. If they look bad on mobile device then person to blame is the people in web-page-devel department. IMO browser should never ever do choices for user on how to show webpage to them (maybe behind options and disabled by default). I want _The Internet_ not some tweaked version that might be usable and pretty but ends up beign huge disservice towards web page developers so that they might end up beign even more lazy and eventually make pages that brake on other browser that strictly go by standards.

I'm not sure what you meant this. Fennec has support for copying text:
* Click some text on webpage
-> there are not any visual mark
* Hold shift and use left/right to mark text
-> Text will get selected
* Press ctrl+c
-> no visual feedback, but text is then on clipboard

I'm not saying this is intuitive or good way, but there are way.

Thanks, you're right, this is better than nothing. A mousepointer would still be better, but good to know that there's atleast one possibility to mark and copy text.

There is a print dialogue, but I think it's a piece from desktop Firefox, its interface isn't optimised for mobile.
Ctrl+P usually doesn't open this dialogue, so try clicking "Print" link on a web-page, for instance.

Desktop Firefox UserAgent

at Terminal
Code:

$ sudo gainroot
$ cd .mozilla/fennec/*.default
$ leafpad prefs.js

add

Code:

user_pref("general.useragent.override","Mozilla/5.0(X11;Linuxi686;rv:2.0.1)Gecko/20100101 Firefox/4.0.1 Fennec/2.0.1");
Save File -> Exit

--------------------------

fennec 4 beta3 is a huge leap forwards. i am using firefox after a few months. Personas and ability to theme your browser is simply awesome. Zooming and Scrolling are much smoother now

plugin.default_plugin_disabled -> false
plugin.disable -> false

thanks for a quick reply. So in Fennec 4 beta 3, flash plugin is enabled by default and it crashes every time. I have disabled it for now.

No, flash is DISABLED by default. If you change the plugin settings to 'false' as described, you ENABLE flash.

I just downloaded and installed version 4.0b4pre

and it is very very nice
no crashes (yet?) and everything seems ok so far,
but this is a nightly build so maybe I am just lucky this time, who knows?

Anyway:

Ok I see this would be a kludge to expect printing from the app,
especially for Fennec which has this beautiful save as pdf
feature builtin.

So ok, just save as pdf and use the normal gtklp routine for printing

(It does have the usual print dialogue available for web-sites
that provide the print button, but I still have not hacked that
dialogue into working yet)
The tabbing is nice once you get accustomed to how it works,
and the overall feel is silky.

Thanks for complimenting Fennec!
I use nightly, and update it frequently. And it practically never crashes.
I prefer Qt version, but it has unusable file open/save dialogue, so lately I use GTK.

Saving as PDF practically never worked right for me.

Re: Fennec 4 beta 3

I went from beta 3 GTK to beta 4 QT nightly and so far I've noticed a change for the better. Browser startup time is about 5-7 sec which is quicker than what I got with b3 GTK. Page rendering stutters slightly but overall a much better performance than before.

I tried this but only have 'plugin.disable' true/false available. On either setting flash wasn't working. Maybe a b3 vs b4 issue which will be resolved later?

Also, any of you find these useful for speed tweaks (and will they even work on mobile version?)

new integer: nglayout.initialpaint.delay '0'

new integer: content.notify.interval '849999'

new boolean: content.interrupt.parsing 'true'

new integer: ui.submenuDelay '0'

Re: Fennec 4 beta 3

@ frostbyte

no those tweaks wont work though try

kinetic scrolling tweak
Code:

browser.ui.kinetic.decelerationRate: 13
browser.ui.kinetic.speedSensitivity: 130
browser.ui.kinetic.updateInterval: 22

and see if u find it better

-------

i am also using fennec qt version. u might wanna re-install it. it should have both plugin.default_plugin_disabled and plugin.disable entries

You may have to uninstall (best use apt-get purge) fennec, then delete ~/.mozilla/firefox and ~/.mozilla/fennec (THIS WILL DELETE YOUR PROFILE!!) Then reinstall fennec nightly builld. Then set ONLY plugin.disable to false and make sure that dom.ipc.plugins.enabled is set to true (it should be after clean install).

Now Flash should work on most sites:

I think B5 has broken compatibility with older versions. (At least the builds from 20110128) There are no addons showing up in the recommendations in the Fennec, and the Addons-site doesn't work. (It doesnt recognize it. It's useless to even try. It will only let you download the .xpi files, thats it.)
Is there an alternative way of installing addons?

Until add-on developers finish testing and marking their add-ons compatible with 4.0b5pre, you can install the Nightly Tester Tools add-on, which adds an option to "force add-on compatibility":
