taking mine back to Carphone whorehouse today. Will tell them I've reflashed but no difference and show them when paper wedge removed error shows on boot up

Should find out within 28 days whether they fix it or replace it...lumbered with a less than bog standard Nokia 1650, but charging it every 5 days will be a novelty!

Problem seems to be gone here, since weeks now... Don't know if it was celltower related or if my n900 has resoldered itself somehow, but no more errors here. (For now)

Just wanted to let you know.

Re: all telephony functions ... are disabled due to a communication error - anyone else experiencing this?

I didn't get my phone back!
They say that they can't fix it and they don't have any N900.
So I'll get an E7 ... wow.

Anyone knows something about when the N950 arrives on this planet?

Re: all telephony functions ... are disabled due to a communication error - anyone else experiencing this?

Hadnt heard back from my insurance company about how they fixed it no surprise there. Sad to hear you cant get your N900 back. e7s not really a suitable replacement though?

Re: all telephony functions ... are disabled due to a communication error - anyone else experiencing this?

E7 is a joke compared to N900. E7 is Symbian, has a non-replaceable battery, no SD, no FM, is Symbian, worse camera, worse UI, it's Symbian, has lower screen resolution, but bigger screen so it's blocky, it's Symbian, has 3 customizable home screen, it's Symbian, has smaller battery, can't be overclocked and it's probably Symbian.

Oh, and, it's Symbian.

What OS is it, though...?:D

Still waiting to hear about mine :(

Re: all telephony functions ... are disabled due to a communication error - anyone else experiencing this?

Fortunately my dealer promised me to find another solution. So maybe I can wait for and pruchase a N950 by just paying the difference ... *hope*

@teethgrinder: MeeGo perhaps would, android could, maybe webOS but I didn't find any nice devices yet ... Symbian isn't. And please don't even think about Windows ;-)

I've solved flashing with an old RX-51_2009SE_10.2010.19-1.002_PR_COMBINED_002_ARM.bin, then I updated whith Ovi suite and now work....

for how long?I dont know.I think it's a hardware problem.

Sorry for my English.

Yes, yesterday. Follow instructions, don't reboot between eemc and the other, do it in Linux if possible.

Sorry - complete reflash did not help for me... It must be a hardware issue.
Mine is now traversing the support hierarchy at Nokia - guess I'll have to rely on my backup N900.

Re: all telephony functions ... are disabled due to a communication error - anyone else experiencing this?

I've had this problem for about a week now. Intermittent at first but now it has reached the point where I have lost all ability to use the N900 as a phone.

It seems to be a hardware problem because in the beginning a piece of paper between the SIM slot and the battery helped, but then it stopped.

I got the N900 in the USA, so I only had a 1 year warranty that expired last December. Although I will keep the N900 as a WiFi tablet, I would be delighted if I could find a way to regain the telephony functions.

Does anyone here have the soldering ability to try to fix or replace the SIM slot, similar to the USB slot soldering that was done by a few on another thread? I'm not even sure that the problem is the SIM slot itself - it could be another part on the PCB, but the fact that the paper under the battery helped at first seems to indicate that this might be the problem.

I myself have no soldering experience and would probably destroy the phone if I tried to do it myself, but if someone succeeds in solving the problem this way, I could probably find a shop to do the job for me.

Re: all telephony functions ... are disabled due to a communication error - anyone else experiencing this?

reflashing did not help me either. i followed the experienced users method under the emmc on the wiki.

Re: all telephony functions ... are disabled due to a communication error - anyone else experiencing this?

It would be nice to get a fuller description of what you did from those of you who flashed the eemc AND the fiasco image.

Sorry that Wiki document is so complicated.

My N900 is still working perfectly after my reflash.

Re: all telephony functions ... are disabled due to a communication error - anyone else experiencing this?

Ya buying the n900 in the US with 1 yr warranty is a pain in the arse. And don't even try sending it to nokia care US asking for a quote for the repair, they won't even do anything but send your phone back 10x worse than when you sent it.

It's definitely a hardware issue, specifically the antenna connections. I opened up my device and found that if I "pushed" the prongs a little up (the prongs for the antenna not the sim card), they had better contact to the left "L" looking piece of the device

ie:
http://www.klc.fi/fin/images/264805.gif

However it would only work occasionally, as I noticed on that "L" piece that my prongs have caused indents into the gold plates. If you can replace those plates I'm sure the connections will work again. Sadly I "pushed" my prongs a little too much that they came off :( and i couldn't be hassled by soldering, so i ended up buying a new one on amazon (ha!) :P

geneven 2011-06-22 18:05

Re: all telephony functions ... are disabled due to a communication error - anyone else experiencing this?

The way I caused mine to do this was definitely non-hardware.

I'm slightly vague on exactly whar happened, but I flashed one of the images and then restored one of the files that was saved using Backupmenu!

Then my N900 ALMOST worked fine, except I started getting the telephony message up to every five seconds. I could do everything but use the phone. I tried many things to fix it.

Only reflashing the eemc and fiasco images in Linux solved the problem.

iam having the same problem, when i move the phone quickly or put it roughly on table it looses the network, i tried taking out the antenna and pulling the pins up but no luck, checked the sim slot, i noticed the loss happens when i hit the top of the phone with my finger, finally, sent it to nokia care and waiting.

Re: all telephony functions ... are disabled due to a communication error - anyone else experiencing this?

i followed these instructions,

Experienced users still may want to follow the rootfs-then-eMMC scheme, which doesn't need the battery removal, but is way less "fool-proof" wrt accidental boots. A boot in this context is defined as any activity of the device (flashing LED, some display on screen) that doesn't result in and stop at the NOKIA boot screen with USB icon. Especially "charging" actually also implies a boot of the system, and there's no lower limit for duration of such an accidental boot, 5s are more than enough to ruin your freshly flashed system.

Re: all telephony functions ... are disabled due to a communication error - anyone else experiencing this?

^ btw speaking of flashing, you'll know if it's a hardware issue if during the flashing it spits out:

Sending and flashing rootfs image (185856 kB)...
100% (185856 of 185856 kB, avg. 11460 kB/s)
Finishing flashing... done
CMT flashing failed

that fail is the disconnect/lost of contact between the antennas, or thats what im assuming

Re: all telephony functions ... are disabled due to a communication error - anyone else experiencing this?

Geeze, that section of the doc seems to have been rewritten several times.

I just installed the flasher and downloaded the correct eemc and fiasco imades. Then WITHOUT EVEN PLUGGIN IN OR TURNING ON MY N900 I ran

flasher-3.5 -F RX-51_2009SE_10.2010.13-2.VANILLA_PR_EMMC_MR0_ARM.bin -f

Then I got the message about suitable USB not found.

Then and only then I plugged in the USB cable to my computer and the N900 and flashing started immediately.

After that completed successfully I did the same with the fiasco image, and all was fine.

Re: all telephony functions ... are disabled due to a communication error - anyone else experiencing this?

Nokia called, my phone is a total loss, they can't figure it out either. I was offered an N8 and I refused, in my view N8 is below my expectations for a phone, I saw several and they didn't work right. We'll be re-negotiating again tomorrow, I'll have to pick a phone from their current lineup.

I'll probably get an E7, it has a hw keyboard and similar hardware to the N900, but as we all know, there will be no more M5 phones out, and it's likely Maemo will not be seen again in a release. Their announced MeeGo phone is so far off course it's not funny. No hardware keyboard, for starters.

I asked them to look and ask around for about a week before calling me with "no replacement". I guess that's it, then. N900 is officially dead.

Well, folks, it's been fun. Ride's over.

I was finally getting attached to the lil' bugger, I've just grown accustomed to having a system image on-device, overclocking and so on. Guess it's back to phones from now on.

On the bright side, better camera, actual maps, an actual phone. So, you know. Not all bad.

Take care of your N900s. They don't make them like that any more.

P.S. Guess I shouldn't have made fun of E7 up there. :)

Re: all telephony functions ... are disabled due to a communication error - anyone else experiencing this?

Just thought I would post an update.
Full re-flash didn't solve the problem for me, so I put my Vodafone (n900) sim card into my android phone, so as not to miss calls. Whilst browsing, I got a similar message about connectivity issues, and also, the Orange sim card I put in my n900, has been fine. So it looks like my problem was with the sim card. I now have ordered a new Vodafone sim card, and hopefully I won't be seeing this issue anymore.
EDIT: Wrong. New simcard doesn't stop this issue. Looks like I'm going to have to send it back. Really annoying.

i dismantled and checked the antenna connections and lifted the tabs a bit and nothing changed. my sim works fine in other phones.

any other suggestions?

Re: all telephony functions ... are disabled due to a communication error - anyone else experiencing this?

Exactly the same issue as the rest of you - been ocurring on and off for past 3 weeks but getting more and more frequent. Reboot clears it for a while but its not more than an hour or two now before its back again.

Sometimes, like @ndi said, everything looks ok but texts don't get through and it only becomes obvious there's a problem when i want to make a call or send txts

Decided only option is to claim under warranty but I don't have original proof of purchase.

Has anyone else managed to get service from Nokia without proof of purchase? (their website confirms the handset is still under warranty from the IMEI no.)

If you can find a Nokia Service Point they will send it to Nokia ... they did so in my case. They didn't want o see any inquiry or something.
But beware ... they could not repair it and they have no N900 so i got an E7. I'm now trying to contact amazon (i bought it there) but they also have no N900 ... :-(

Maybe I'll get an N9 .... ha ha ha ;-)

Re: all telephony functions ... are disabled due to a communication error - anyone else experiencing this?

The "communication error" started to pop up about a year ago on my N900. It took about 2-3 weeks until the phone was completely unusable. I didnt think about repairing it as I thought the warranty was only 6 months. I got an Android phone instead and put the N900 away in my electronic scrap box.
Now as Android starts to annoy me more and more every day I picked up the N900 again, charged it and ... well ... "communication error" again. I went to the operator store and they told there are 2 years of warranty!
The phone is now on its way back to Nokia - hope they will fix it!

spoke with nokia today and they suggested reflashing. since im out of warranty they referred me to http://www.palcocellphonerepair.com/ for repairs and after speaking with palco it looks like it'll cost around $68 to fix.

Same story here. Except my E7 is still on route.

@Millsy1 You don't need proof of purchase, you need the warranty card - it's a paper that states the date of purchase, the IMEI and the issuer of the card. It's not really a card, it's an A4 paper folded in two.

When I sent it to Nokia, they said I didn't need any of them, since all N900s were in warranty, seeing how it was released under 2 years. When I sent it it, they returned the invoice and adjacent papers, but they kept the warranty card. Since I'm not getting it back, it's OK.

The only option they gave me is to contact the seller and ask them for a replacement N900, and they would arrange the exchange. Unfortunately, I ordered it from the other side of the country, so I'm not going there. I took the E7.

Feels odd to go Symbian, but I'm low on alternatives.

Sent N900 to nokia via ups courier last monday they just sent it back saying it was repaired but when open package they had sent Nokia N8 and no notes to say it had been swapped or anything, so i rang them up stating i want a N900 not this piece of crap N8 and after they told me i will have to wait for a call from the escualations dept.
Not impressed at all

Re: all telephony functions ... are disabled due to a communication error - anyone else experiencing this?

Similar thing has now happened to me. Having sent my N900 to Vodafone repair centre, with a detailed explanation of the problem and the methods that I have tried to resolve the error, Vodafone have now got back to me yesterday. They said that they were unable to repair my phone but would be happy to offer me a brand new Nokia N8 free of charge. Ha ha ha. That made me laugh that one. So I said no thank you, so they then told me that they would have to send it on to Nokia, and I would probably have to wait another week. I have a good idea of the next thing that I am going to be told. Well, I'll wait and see and let you know what happens. Not impressed so far.

Re: all telephony functions ... are disabled due to a communication error - anyone else experiencing this?

i resolve this problem by this :

1- download emmc the last one
2- download the last flasher software

do this and

1- install emmc flasher in your n900.. after that quickly & immediately install the last flasher software up on emmc

if the first time not doing will ... do it one or tow or three or more until it will don like this :

Sending and flashing rootfs image (185856 kB)...
100% (185856 of 185856 kB, avg. 11460 kB/s)
Finishing flashing... done
CMT flashing done
that is my story >> am swear its good for me
it will good for you too if you try it ;)

Re: all telephony functions ... are disabled due to a communication error - anyone else experiencing this?

Hello guys,

I have had the 'communication error' since today.
First i rebooted the device 5 times but the problem came back every time within 30 minutes.

Now i have removed the SIM card and applied some pressure on the circuit board. After that i used a small knife to bend the contacts that connect to the SIM card all a little upwards.

I do not know if it is a coincidence but now after booting the device i have not had the problem since.

Maybe this will work for you guys too.

Good luck.
