Re: N900 rescue OS - testing release

um....ain't the standard "sudo gainroot" for xterminal?
It's what I have always used on my n8x0's...
it should be the same for the n900...
not much has changed in regard to the basics....regardless of the model...AFAIK...right?
just gotta install rootsh first

el cid...if in doubt...just search the forum...I would imagine for something as fundamental as "xterminal root password" would have given you an answer...if not multiple answers to your dilemma ...

It is.

The only time you may need a root password is when you want to connect to the device as root via something like WinSCP. The number of times I wanted something like that could be counted on... err, one finger. A bent one.

Re: N900 rescue OS - testing release

There we go then...
2 for 2 ...el cid.
I am thinking that you haven't touched your n900 in quite a while to have forgotten a fundamental as this...

Now...
for me...
back to one of my fav. Quatermas movies ....
"X the Unknown..."...

Dun-dun dunnnn!

(and yes yes... it isn't a "Quatermas" movie ...specifically ..but X is in the genre...my fav Quatermas movie is number 2 for sure...
though the 1979 wasn't bad either...the 2005 remake was not my cup of tea...though it was done live...which is impressive..
Now back to the radioactive mud man....dun-dun dunnnn!..)

You should be able to download it from there...

You could try to copy /etc/passwd to mmc edit the file, blank the password or put some known password into it.

Code:

cp /etc/passwd /media/mmc1
this would be a line with the password rootme
Code:

root:5aFRhBRgJ87j6:0:0:root:/root:/bin/sh
After you have modified your passwd, start rescueOS mount the root and mount mmc.
Replace the passwd file in /mnt/maemo/etc/.
As an alternative you could use nano to directly edit the passwd file.

Then run following command:

Code:

chmod u+s /mnt/maemo/bin/su
Now you can unmount everything, poweroff and start maemo again. You should be able to do 'su' in a terminal with the new password. After that you can change the password if it was blank.

I will also attach a binary for the N900 which can change the root password in a backup passwd file. Extract it and make it executable. But I guess when you fear rootsh, you will also not running this binary.:)

Usage:

Code:

./chrootpwd file=/media/mmc1/passwd
It will ask for a new root password which replaces the old one in the file.

It could be done, then I need to rewrite chrootpwd with plain c and integrating to rescueOS, but I am to lazy for that. Or figure out how to run a binary as su without sudo or rootsh and not knowing the password.

Thank you endsormeans I learn from you many unknown english terms. Sometimes it is hard to understand and I need to read more than once. Lol when google "El Cid":)
The biggest harm to the device is when somebody else have it in his own hands. My work doesn't harm myself because I think it is already known.
Also removing the usb port doesn't give you protection, you still can install rootsh or sudo to change the root password.
Don't give the device away or do not loose it. Protect sensible data with truecrypt.

Re: N900 rescue OS - testing release

BTW does somebody figure out how to 'ESC' in vi from rescueOS.
Or how to get a pipe '|' and greater than '>' in the terminal?

Ach!
It's all good 1/2-tux :)
There are a ton of sayings I have to reread in english too....

I keep forgetting that some people are still interested in protecting their data...
Here in most of North America...the bulk of folks just don't seem to care who sees or has access to their data...

Me ...
I gave up trying to stop the "Powers That Be" from discovering my cache of Brazilian Fart Porn...

Sorry for the confusion...
