Re: Nokia N9 discontinued today in Finland

does lumiaman diarrhea on every n9 thread? Why?

on topic, I'm sure glad I pulled the trigger on my N9 64GB when I did.

LOL. Just checked Amazon here in the use and the N9 16 GB is going for $130 *more* than a no-contract Lumia 900.

I guess it just shows you that a pretty phone running a broken shell of an OS from the 1980s (CE) with a pretty Silverlight wrapper, no filesystem, broken bluetooth and no future doesn't appeal to people as much as a phone with a real operating system that actually works.

Silverlight wrapper? WP7.5 doesn't support Silverlight. No sir!

Re: Nokia N9 discontinued today in Finland

It's called a "Silverlight Applet" here: http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php...hlight=1.2+end

So care to elaborate? I'm certainly no WP expert, but my company abandoned CE for embedded applications a long time ago. Seems WP is still making use of it...?

It doesn't support Silverlight in web browser (a MS alternative to Adobe flashplayer). I'm not sure what the author meant by 'Silverlight applet'.

The "author" meant that Windows Phone 7 apps are written in Silverlight, and the Windows Phone 7 OS provides a runtime environment for running Silverlight apps. Having no Silverlight support in the (probably also written in Silverlight itself) browser is another story...

Re: Nokia N9 discontinued today in Finland

I also confirmed it is a CE kernel with no file system access, no ability to save email attachments other than pictures (and then you can only save to the viewer app) no Bluetooth file transfer, no PDF viewer (let alone annotations), etc. Basically a Zune mp3 player with a phone app. Purely a toy compared to any phone with a real OS.

WP7 makes iOS look like a full blown Unix (especially jailbroken).

Re: Nokia N9 discontinued today in Finland

I once wanted to download an ISO with my Lumia in order to copy it to my laptop later. No way! Lumia just told me that this file is "not supported by Windows Phone" instead of downloading it.

Btw, there is a PDF reader available on WP. Acrobat Reader. But it's really bad, IMHO.

Re: Nokia N9 discontinued today in Finland

That's just lame. Right before my last trip to Asia I found out I was to meet with and give presentations to a couple customers I hadn't known about. I didn't have time to pull out my laptop, so I had a colleague email a few powerpoints to me, retrieved and saved them on my N9 on the way to the airport, then copied them to my laptop somewhere over Canada on the plane to edit. Now I realize there are other ways to skin this cat, but this is something I simply could not have done on WP7 (or iOS, though webOS can)

Edit: oh yeah, and WP7 doesn't have multitasking...WTF? craziness.

Actually what Samsung is doing is the smart way to do it. The average consumer doesn't care about operating system, only if it's cool or not.

Samsung currently have 2 or 3 phones that can be considered top of the pile (Galaxy, Nexus and Note), they will sell millions of these phones on reputation now.

Android works just about, it bridges the gap. They start rolling out Tizen to their new major devices and phase out Android without any fuss. People buy it, start using it in their millions and so a new ecosystem is born.

Nokia in their great wisdom did the opposite.

And what basis are you making this opinion? Every fact available and any analyst who has commented on Nokia/WP7 thinks that it's doomed to failure.

Who are you really? I suspect your on the wind up or else are one of those spam bots perhaps, a sane person couldn't be that stupid.

How? Interest in Europe is evaporating, cannot gain traction in China, India and other parts of Asia and it's downhill in U.S. (ranked no. 18 at Amazon despite being the cheapest smartphone at $50).

The only phone which can save Nokia is the unwanted child N9 but Elop would rather let Nokia die than admit he's wrong.

Re: Nokia N9 discontinued today in Finland

Ofcourse wp has blutooth support, filesystem and multitasking cause it is a ready os. Ask elop he knows that.

What will happen to the existing N950's once they are returned from the DEV's? Any plans to resell them again, or will they be destroyed?

They should sell them to verified N900 owners.

I think you're wrong there, the N9 was a nice effort but it was never going to challenge Apple or Samsung.

The only device which could save Nokia right now would be a top of the line (specs) device, with classy expensive looking hardware running Android which as much or even more features than the SGS3.

It's the only way Nokia can join a party, waiting for Windows to never catch on is killing them.

They don't care... we will probably keep our N950's till we are dead. Nokia is not taking them back at all.

Of course we don't know how far the N9 could have gone with proper support and promotion instead of being declared a dead OS by Elop himself but the signs were indeed encouraging. It was the first Nokia phone in living memory which excited so much interest and to have gained so much admiration and positive reviews. It has true multitasking and an elegant innovative UI which appealed to users disillusioned with ios and Android. It had real potential of becoming a major player if Nokia had sold in every market. At the very least it would have reduced the bleeding in Nokia.

Users don't look at hardware specs only, they also consider the OS, UI, usability, apps, etc. Nokia was onto a good thing with the N9 but instead of seeing it as a revenue generator Elop saw it as a threat to Lumia.

When you think about it a 64 GB N9 is about the same price as a 64 GB ipod Touch...but includes a cell phone, navigation, better battery and MeeGo. Quite the steal if you ask me.

Re: Nokia N9 discontinued today in Finland

it may not be sold (officially?) in Finland anymore, but a reseller is advertizing the whole range of N9 (except black 16GB) with mail delivery from Heinola, Finland. :)
with 2 years NOKIA warranty :D

It's more likely they have stocked some units from clearance.
Nokia.com pages for us are not displaying it as part of the portfolio.

It is actually, have a closer look at the Nokia US website, it's listed there now, just tucked away.
Same for many other sites around the world now, it's still there, but well hidden.
I was very sceptical at 1st, but it does seem they're making if officially available, i.e. local warranty/support.
But it's constrained to only one major retailer, so it's not open slather availability in the retail channel.
That's almost as bad as not being officially available, but at least it IS finally officially available, albeit far too late to matter.

Just wondering, but has the N9 really been discontinued? I bought a N9 yesterday, imported Vietnamese model, assembled in China with a manufacturing date of 10.06.2012 on the box.

jalyst 2012-07-24 21:19

Re: Nokia N9 discontinued today in Finland

It's nearing manufacture stoppage, that's for sure....
Many are speculating that it's still being manufactured in China, but no longer the other sites.
How much longer that'll last exactly is anyone's guess, sooner rather than later I'd say.
By the time we've hit Oct. I reckon it definitely will have stopped, I hope I'm wrong though.

They will continue manufactoring and sell it in china because china is pissing on mr elops wp phones.

but when jolla comes out in china nokia will be even more doomed. :D
