Thanks - dabuplayer, that makes sense because I have played music to my mono Motorola HS850 BT headset from two of my Dell Pocket PC's in the past, and also from my desktop computer with a USB Bluetooth dongle installed. Odd that Kagu / N800 / Mplayer refuses to work that way. I have reflashed my N800 (wiping everything back to Nokia factory all) and performed all the Milhouse instructed steps again. Each time I did the Milhouse steps with great care ( I am an assembly language programmer with 30 years experience so I know how to not screw up something as simple as this). Still no sound coming thru my HS850. I believe others who claim Milhouse's trick is working for them...... oh well, I hope that IT OS2008 will have A2DP next month, and that it will allow me to use my HS850 with Skype too......that is something that is very desirable. One of the main reasons for my buying the N800 last week was to use it with Skype, GoogleTALK, and Gizmo Project VOIPs. Shame that the multimedia and VOIP Bluetooth stuff slipped by those at Nokia. They obviously were concentrating on Bluetooth GPS, cellular Internet tethering via bluetooth and Bluetooth keyboards way more than WiFi / Bluetooth Voip use. I'm not complaining.... Kagu is fantastic and so is Skype on the N800. I'll flash the OS2008 when it posts at maemo and enjoy 400mhz cpu speed hopefully next month. |

Re: A2DP: Simplified Install Instructions
but no A2DP it seems
|
Re: A2DP: Simplified Install Instructions
Maybe A2DP support is the Easter Egg in OS 2008? A2DP support became available in the Bluez stack - mainly through the involvement of Nokia - more than 2 months ago. :)

Re: A2DP: Simplified Install Instructions
dabuplayer, I think you missed my point... A mono headset does not support A2DP. SBC decoding is not trivial, and an optimized headset design does not have the power to decode SBC, and still allow a long battery life.
Since they will see the target device does not have A2DP support, phones, PDAs, PCs will probably make the connection to a voice headset like the HS850 via the headset profile. I don't think Millhouse has added headset profile support... It seems specifically targeted to A2DP only. |

One application of this would be for underpowered devices like the n770 where you would like to watch a movie through a2dp and don't care about stereo sound, so switching to mono saves a lot of processor time and battery. Indeed i misread your answer, thinking the original question was whether a2dp supports mono or not. cheers |
Re: A2DP: Simplified Install Instructions
I work for a company that makes Bluetooth chipsets that specifically target automotive Telematics solutions, and I can say that A2DP in general is not trivial. A headset designer is most specifically optimizing for low power, and so would not want to have to provide the extra processing bandwidth required for the SBC codec (the minimal codec spec specified by the A2DP profile). That's one big reason why stereo headsets are generally much larger (to accomodate larger batteries) and have talk times defined in hours compared to days for a mono headset.

Re: A2DP: Simplified Install Instructions
Thank you for your post, but I am a novice, so I need some more "basic" instructions on how to install the becomroot package in device in R&D mode. How do I get to the "repsoitory" to application manager and how do I enable R&D mode? I also need some more guidance for installing the A2DP software. Where do I find the software, how do I enter the scripts, ets. Wish I wasn't so unskilled at this. My email address is paul@hiplaces.org or post the help. Thanks!

Re: A2DP: Simplified Install Instructions
Milhouse: This is a new query, unrelated I believe to anything above, but as it concerns A2DP, I believe it is appropriate that I put it here.
It concerns my inability to play ogg-formatted music on Kagu using my Bluetooth headphones. Without burdening you with the details, I had to rip one of my cd's using my Linux box as my PC's cd-player wouldn't recognize that particular cd! When I transferred the ripped music to my N800 and scanned with Kagu, it was readily accepted and played by Kagu -- except when I tried listening to it using my Bluetooth headphones (which of course were enabled for Kagu use by your wonderful A2DP application). Can you see any reason why your application wouldn't be equally viable for ogg-formatted music as it is for MP3? Any help would be appreciated, as usual. Regards, Jim |
Re: A2DP: Simplified Install Instructions
Probably a limitation of mplayer, would be my guess... Serge might be the best person to ask, in one of the mplayer threads.

Re: A2DP: Simplified Install Instructions
Not being funny guys, but am I living in cloud cuckoo land with this idea.
N800/N810 running OS08 (when it finally comes out!) Streaming internet radio (God I only want radio 4 for God's sake!) to my Sony MBR-100 (currently pointlessly bought), which is (currently uselessly) plugged into my hifi (okay, okay i'd settle for BT stereo headphones). Does anybody even think this is possible. Or are we in the realms of yet more code? I mean from a user point of view this is a consumer device for nearly $600, isn't it.. Not a development box with loads of wires hanging out of the back. For the sake of a2dp, Bluez (wtf!), CP30, or R2D2 come to that! I mean will this 'simplified' work around (no disrespect to you guys, but have you read some of the "look all you do is", posts on here!) even apply to OS2008, or are we starting from scratch again? Other than the lack of A2DP, the thing is a perfect device for remote control music in my house, but at nearly $600 (£289.00 in the UK) to take a course in Linux. I think my CC will be staying in my pocket for the time being..... Other than that I'll have a go bugger it up and end up paying somebody to sort it out. Any takers for that one! "Errr dad, I think I've broken it"; "Stupid boy...." |
Re: A2DP: Simplified Install Instructions
Based on what I've heard so far it seems like for 2008OS it will go something like:
1) Edit /etc/bluetooth/audio.conf and uncomment some line 2) Pair your headphones/stereo 3) Install Kagu 4) Launch Kagu and click its Bluetooth icon 5) Hit play and music comes out of your headphones/stereo I don't know if it would be frowned upon or even be all that smart but it seems like someone could just make a package whose entire purpose was to update the configuration file in question. So that first step might be "install enable-a2dp.deb" In 2008OS it should be much easier for applications to support A2DP, but it's not enabled by default. |
Re: A2DP: Simplified Install Instructions
I've been listening to internet radio with my Bluetooth A2DP stereo headphones and my N800 for some time now thanks to the excellent instructions posted in this forum by Sachin007. Do a search of his postings if you're interested in following through before the new firmware is released. And even afterward, if the new firmware doesn't manage it on its own.

Re: A2DP: Simplified Install Instructions
Picture that: a bluetooth receiver hidden in the glove box in your car. Your tablet on the dashboard, with no messy wires in sight (well, maybe a charger, but that's a fine gauge wire with a small connector;)), Kagu streaming music via bluetooth to your car stereo.
You approach a waypoint, Kagu stops playing and Maemo Mapper (or the integrated maps program, your choice) gives you indications (again, via bluetooth to your car stereo), then music resumes playing. Will that be possible with OS2008? |

It's still a ridiculous oversight IMHO. I mean I shouldn't have to be even studying this at all. Out of the box, errr click, click, point... Toy!, development box, errrr useful..... I mean how bleeding edge does one have to be! Why not sell the thing in kit form, or as one of those ridiculous magazine part works, while they're at it.. I'll say the heretical.... .exe file....! Comment this, comment out that indeed... Sorry, I'll go back to lurking, readin n learning.. I know this ain't a discussion forum.. |
Re: A2DP: Simplified Install Instructions
ukdutypaid - what JohnX says is correct, A2DP is available in OS2008 but it isn't enabled by default as it's not finished and still needs improving (such as DSP support). In order to enable A2DP in OS2008 you only need to edit one config file, which is easy to do with xterm but if you don't like getting your hands dirty it shouldn't be too difficult for someone to build a package to accomplish the task which you then install via the Application Manager.

I'm certainly (and I'm sure that goes for many) aren't going to fork out 300 quid/600 bucks to then have to start fiddling with it. Hell the whole area is complicated enough as it is... I suppose it's a case of "Do I want one enough?" We've all bought and ended up with useless gadgets. Perhaps I just don't understand enough (DSP/Bluez, being two cases in point), with my desire for it to work out of the box. I'll see how things pan out. |
Re: A2DP: Simplified Install Instructions
I now have A2DP working with KAGU on my N800. I find that the music cuts in and out (choppy) frequently. Any thoughts? Thanks.
|
Re: A2DP: Simplified Install Instructions
I don't know if this is of any help. I've had -- and have reported in this forum -- the same problem. However, I loaded the new version of Kagu last night and the problem -- for now -- seems to have disappeared! Try it yourself and let us know if my initial impression is correct.
|
I installed kagu last night for the first time. Version 1.0.10-2
Seems that the new version can still lead to choppy reception? |
Re: A2DP: Simplified Install Instructions
A2DP is extremely compute-intensive right now. High bitrate codecs / complex codecs and multiple other apps running will probably cause stuttering.
|
Re: A2DP: Simplified Install Instructions
Thank you for the responses, ascherjim and aleksandyr. Its pretty good when solely playing music. It gets very choppy when I start to browse, etc at the same time as playing music. I am not sure if the 2.4 GHz band can cause interference with bluetooth transmission/reception. But I did notice that the choppiness is practically non-existent at work, which is a wifi dead zone. As opposed to my house which has two AP's, and a bunch more in the vicinity. Just an emperical observation.

Re: A2DP: Simplified Install Instructions
I used this procedure to install it on my N810 but after I was done and my headset worked I could not turn on the N810 after I had switched it off.
Seems that the sbc-svn_20070608-1_armel.deb package is responsibe for this behaviour. See also the thread: http://www.internettablettalk.com/fo...400#post105400 |
Re: A2DP: Simplified Install Instructions
These instructions are not compatible with OS 2008.

Re: A2DP: Simplified Install Instructions
Haha, what a muppet. I've gone ahead and bought one of these things now..
So a2dp don't work, if you upgrade it to OS08. Come on guys this thing is a fancy developers box.. n82, p1i, anybody... out of the box...? There's a guy posting on another thread... "Complete newbie to linux". I feel for the guy... I'll take it to my mates, when I stay for Xmas, then it's going on Ebay, me thinks.... Make it a phone (sorry, what's the company who make it known for? Is it Dell, ASUS, no it's Nokia) , give me FM, hell bluetooth stereo and I'll come back to it.. This things for you guys, not the techi, interested consumer..... Nokia make it, we pay for their market testing and then you lot develop it for 'em.... Yes I'm being mean, 'cos I've got the hump.... lol |
Re: A2DP: Simplified Install Instructions
[QUOTE=Milhouse;65329]Full instructions for downloading and installing A2DP software can be found here. The instructions listed here offer a simplified and largely automated installation methodology that should work every time.
Jump to step 5 if you have xterm and wget installed, root access and have already paired your Bluetooth headset. Pre-requisites to be satisfied before installing A2DP 0. Have an N800 - - Please advise, does this hack work with N810 as well, anyone? |
Re: A2DP: Simplified Install Instructions
No, the "hack" is just for OS 2007, not OS 2008 (n810/n800).

Re: A2DP: Simplified Install Instructions
Hello All,
(first post) I followed Millhouse's simplified instructions for adding a2dp to my N800. I would like to report bluetooth a2dp success using Kagu 1.0.10-3 and the Sony HWS-BTA2W. I have seen multiple posts about pairing the N800 with BT headphones, but none mention the Sony HWS-BTA2W, so I figured I would add this post. The Sony device is a nice way to add wireless mp3 audio to desktop radio's (ie... Bose or Cambridge SoundWorks). FYI: N800 with OS2007 v 2007.26-8 (have not upgraded yet) Thanks All, SpeedyM |

Re: A2DP: Simplified Install Instructions
Johnx and I have A2DP working somewhat decently... See this thread for details:
http://internettablettalk.com/forums...ad.php?t=13468 His first post goes over setting it up, and my post on page 5 has a .deb for a patched mplayer that fixes playback stuttering, and a few instructions to get it working correctly in kagu and for video. PS: The search feature is wonderful. :) |
Re: A2DP: Simplified Install Instructions
Thanks for the hints. As to the search function, I haven't been able to use it when, as nearly always, I am reading this forum with my N810...

Re: A2DP: Simplified Install Instructions
Sorry to be a pain but I wondered if anyone could help me? I cannot get past stage 1: installing xterm. When I click on the install link a dialogue box pops up but whether I chose save or run nothing actually happens, near as I can tell. I have no idea where to start. Help?
