I'm Dared? I'm always up for a challenge.

1. Tech is cheap. Add additional tax.
2. US government spending more than they receive.
3.1+2=right price for tech.

TOUCHDOWN!

That was remarkably coherent. Meh. Fail.

It might even work. After all, it's not the price of petrol ("gas") that he is suggesting to raise.

Europeans might also wanna try to buy tech in Switzerland. It's as cheap or even cheaper than in the US. In case you don't believe me: I'm often over there and always check out these stores, with the conclusion to better buy that stuff back in Switzerland (with a few exceptions). And yes, same things cost a lot in Europe - at least in Germany or Italy I experienced that. So you don't have to travel that far...

Thats because Switzerland isn't part of EU / EU's VAT system.

Expect that price to go up quite a bit once the VAT gets added to the order (sales tax in Switzerland is only 8%, compared ca. 20% in the Union).

Big Mac: 6.50 CHF
iPad Air (16Gb): 549.00 CHF

But I don't think those prices will be a good reference... Rauha gave a good explanation.

Going to Toronto soon. How is the prices of tech? Just as cheap as us? Anyone got a great tech store close to city center.

Thx

Exchange on the US dollar is not so good so my guess is that stuff is not as "cheap" as in US. But on the bright side, some carriers in Toronto use the right frequencies such that you can get reasonable data speeds on your Jolla phone there. So take it along!

Re: Why is tech so very cheap in US?

I bought my Treo 600 whilst on a business trip in Vancouver. I remember having paid about a third less than what I would have paid in the UK. Plus I got a tax refund ;) (not much).

That was my only phone I ever bought new, BTW (for myself, that is).

According to the iPad/iPhone index prices its just slighly more expressive than US but still cheap compared with mAny other countries.

iPhone price index. Of course one must exist. Why did I not think of that?
Quite useful, actually. Even though I am never going to buy an iPhone, let alone a new one, it is still useful as a rough comparison guide for tech prices in general.

It's not the only way to get a warranty; however a new device in the US means it's one of the better ways to get a device with a warranty. Personally I have no issue with refurbished for myself; however in the US we have no laws that benefit the customer in regards to getting our devices fixed. In simpler terms, if used, we tend to pay.

That's one thing the EU has that I really do miss. The second though would be that until very recently, there was no benefit to having an unlocked phone due to the structure of our networks (read: proprietary as all get out). But even that is starting to not be the issue with phone brands and chipsets being somewhat normalized.

It's still an issue; but the used devices having little to no warranty just plain sucks in the US. I've always assumed that's why our crap cost so much less. We don't have an EU-like warranty guarantee in place.

Re: Why is tech so very cheap in US?

Hmm, none of the used device warranty would apply to me anyway. I bought virtually all my phones in the past privately, either from an acquaintance or from eBay. The only two exceptions are the aforementioned Treo I bought new from the shop in downtown Vancouver and a Jolla for my other half I bought from the Jolla online shop. My own Jolla is second-hand from a fellow TMO member.

There are things like "approved second-hand" that you can buy from a dealer and those come with a warranty but tend to cost much more which is why I generally avoid them :)

Bought approx 100 new phones and nerver got à faulty one. (Got one SE Arc that sid reastart once in à while but paper trick in battary solved that) However got one faulty tv and à Broken laudspeaker once :D

Warranty. credit card cover worrenty world-wide and insurance in country. I'm sure they would even cover the jolla tablet scam if pressing the issue.

Now, what stores in city center. Best buy migrated to the other sida of the border.

EDIT: Not that I like bestbuy but they do sell tech. :rolleyes:http://www.bestbuy.ca

Well... you're quite the different case than I had imagined.

It matters on what I'm going to do with the device, but if it is for tinkering, I do not worry about the warranty. If it is for my wife or son; I get a warranty.

Different strokes for different folks.

Ha Ha. Love Big Macs!

You know, if you are in Toronto, you are less than 2 and 1/2 hours from Niagara Falls US. You might as well cross the border and get some cheap goodies and then enjoy the view of the falls while in the area!

Really? It's the worst burger I've ever eaten...tiny, no meat and well. you don't feel well after the meal. Sick Really.

Went to US two years ago just to super size. IMPOSSIBLE! Got an 0.5 coke or something. Expected a MEGA SIZE or something. Rediculas. US is not what it used to be...After that. never again.

Niagara Falls? looks great...Idea. We're flying to NYC, picking up some friends, renting a few cars and driving. I will make that suggestion. Seems to be on the way...almost.

Thx Man.

While I do like the taste of Big Macs I don't eat them for the very reasons you suggest...

Glad I am able to provide a helpful travel trip. I actually grew up in the finger lakes region (upstate NY). If it is not out of your way you might also consider stopping at Watkins Glen. It is on the south part of Seneca Lake. It is a beautiful park to hike through. There are also quite a few wineries in the finger lakes region. Not sure if they will be up to your standards though!

As an American; I do not eat Big Macs. Ever. I wouldn't suggest anybody doing so - better hamburgers exist.

I just looked up the World Cup of Ice Hockey. I see that some of the matches are made of teams that represent continents. North America and Europe. Is that something new? Didn't see Asia in particular or, understandably, others. These teams are composed of players 23 years old or younger from respective continents. But how does Czech Republic end up playing Europe?

Well, forget about the format and the teams. I guess that NHL Wanted to make sure all the best players in NHL can participate. But I'm there for the food and drinks invited by an old business colleague.
