Re: Jolla hardware internals

Qualcomm seems to be ridiculously tight lipped about any technical specs of their devices, so only thing you can find on qualcomm sites are marketing stuff.

any info about the wifi chipset yet?

Are there places/pins inside the phone that are linked to the speaker/audio plug?

It is an qualcomm prima one. You can download jollas kernel source and integrate the opensource prima kernel driver. As a matter of facts I even have the sources with intergrated prima on my github profile.

Hello, I'm new here, glad to be part of the Sailfish OS Movement!

I wonder if anybody knows what kind of earpiece speaker is in the phone? Perhaps even a Nokia related one? I got a seriously nerving scratching high pitch interfrequence distortion noise which sounds like the membrane of the speaker hits something. I can understand the person, but it's just annoying. I don't consider sending the phone into RMA just because of this, thus I ask if anybody knows the part ID so that I maybe could order it from somewhere :)

So is there support/possibility to wireless 5Ghz band unlocking?
Wcn3660 datasheet does mention wireless dual band diplexer .
I found kernel driver doesn't yet support wireless 5GHz (802.11ac).
Is this true ?

I do have the same problem as you.
What have you done finaly to get loudspeaker working correct again?

Re: Jolla hardware internals

My Jolla's speaker just went AWOL. Headphones work and so does the phone speaker, it's just the loudspeaker that's suddenly gone silent. Out of the blue. One moment it went beep when I plugged in the charger, the next it went quiet when an email alert was supposed to sound.

My questions are,
  1. How difficult is it to open the phone? Is it just to remove TOH and unscrew those 10 screws? How high is the risk of stripping them, on the scale from 0% (N900) to 100% (N9)?
  2. How is the speaker attached? Springs, solder, sellotape, magic?
  3. Anhone know any source for a replacement?

kimmoli 2014-11-01 19:56

Re: Jolla hardware internals

1. Not too difficult
2. springloaded magic :)
3. afaik, no replacements

Before opening phone, this worked for me https://together.jolla.com/question/...#post-id-51238

also changing speaker at care did go under warranty.

Found also this that is related: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q4e5zqG86c4

If you mean the squeeze method, that was the first thing I tried.

Thanks for the TJC link, BTW. I should learn to use it more. I usually don't because I find navigating there a complete nightmare. Nothing compared to TMO.

That TJC thread describes my problem exactly. It also pointed me to this thread (I did some search before posting, but apparently for wrong keywords, not "muted"... silly me!). It looked promising sice I did have Gallery open for a long time when the sound went out. Needless to say, the solution there did not help.

I'm sure it does, but I bought mine second hand and without papers.

If you've got your IMEI (which I assume you do ;)), they'll just give you the warranty. At least they did it to me...

I don't get it. Everyone's got the IMEI.

tiempjuuh 2014-11-01 21:25

Re: Jolla hardware internals

The IMEI is just like a serial number. An IMEI is issued at a specific date, so if your phone's IMEI is < 2 years old, you still have your warranty.

No matter if you get what I'm saying or not, just contact Jolla care and see how it develops.

pichlo 2014-11-01 21:33

Re: Jolla hardware internals

I know how the IMEI works. The part I don't get is that you suggest that the warranty is transferable. That's not how it usually works, you need to produce a receipt. Anyway, I can try, that should not cost anything.

UPDATE
Encouraged by kimmo's post, I have opened the blighter and can report that:
  1. It was dead easy (although only because I already happened to have the right screwdriver - Torx T5, same as for the N9, in case anyone wants to follow);
  2. My speaker is speaking again :D
  3. My NFC is not, but that's the least of my bothers :p

I did not do anything special: opened it, rubbed the contracts with a finger nail, put it back together.

I also previously had the same problem with the speaker of my Jolla - also removed the back cover / TOH and worked a bit with the speaker.

That was a few months ago - seems to be working nowadays. But the contacts of the speaker seem to be faulty - the speaker occasionally has a hiccup.

Re: Jolla hardware internals

So out of the sudden I also experienced this speaker issue. I noticed this after my alarm sound was not played in the morning...

I am sure this issue was caused by a drop from about 60cm height. :o

So I opened my Jolla today, cleaned the contacts and also bend the contacts from the speaker a little bit so that they will apply some more pressure onto the contacts on the backplate. :D
It's working fine now. :)

Re: Jolla hardware internals

Something which I don't remember being touched on in this thread or elsewhere is that the front-facing camera is different in the First One to the later (in my case March) batches.

I assume the sensor is the same, but the lens is definitely different.

Other differences appear to be that SIM holder and battery have marginally better fit, and device creaks and groans less if you squeeze it (presumably better put together).

Also, does anyone have a later than March or April production date? Someone told me they had an April, but it was the first I'd heard of later than March, and wondering if they'd made an error.

How can I check it? I only received my Jolla a few weeks ago...

Lift the battery out. It says in the tray underneath.

I'm sceptical as to whether any more either have been or will be produced.

Re: Jolla hardware internals

My Jolla's on its way back to me after suffering a faulty internal MMC. Any idea what sort of repair they will have done? I've not seen it listed on any of the diagrams which IC is the internal 16GB MMC so I'm wondering if they'll have switched the board holding it or actually resoldered a new chip onto my device...

10 bucks on a swap device. eMMC is fairly tight with the PCB and all.. (I don't know your specific case)

Re: Jolla hardware internals

I suspect so as well. I'm a bit disappointed in the customer service though - I explicitly asked about that and they just ignored me. I bought a new phone that turned out to be faulty within a fortnight of use. I expect a new phone as a replacement, but I've no idea if I'm getting a refurb unit that could have all sorts done to it, and be older than the 2 weeks I had my "new" phone for.
